London jewellers Mappin & Webb produced this carriage clock in a limited edition of 200 to commemorate their two hundred year anniversary having been founded by Jonathan Mappin in Sheffield, becoming Mappin & Webb in 1868. £600 - 800

197 764 An Art Deco three piece clock garniture the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel and stamped to the backplate with the trademark of the clockmaker Samuel Marti, the gilt-metal octagonal dial with black Arabic numerals and blued steel hands, set within a case of green, pink and black verigated marble, with spelter figures of naked females sat in contemplation to either side of the centre block, all standing on a rectangular base, with matching green, pink and black marble side vases, height 26.5 cm. £900 - 1000

* Samuel Marti was one of the prolific French makers of the 1800’s and was known to be working circa 1860 at Le Pays de Montbeliard, Paris making roulant blancs. Along with Japy Freres and Roux they set up a business in 1863 to market their movements to such firms as L’Epee. Their Paris address was Rue Vieille-du-Temple from 1870.

198 765 Vincenti et Cie, a French four-glass mantel clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a gong with the backplate stamped with the trademark A & N, Paris within a cameo along with the trademark of the movement maker ‘Vincenti et Cie, Medaille d’Argent 1855’, the enamel dial with floral swags between the blue Roman numerals and decorative blued steel hands, the bezel set with a ring of paste brilliants, repeated to the gilt-brass pendulum bob, the Anglaise style four-glass case with Corinthian columns to the fluted columns on the front corners and standing on stepped feet, height 34 cm.

* Vincenti started his workshops before 1823 in Montbeliard, France but went bankrupt a year later, whereupon the clock manufacturer Roux took on the management on his behalf, making the roulant blancs (rough movements) for clockmakers to finish and use. Vincenti died in 1834 with the business continuing to win numerous awards including the Medaille d’Argent (silver medal) in 1855. £800 - 1000

767 A modern epicyclic clock in the manner 766 of Strutt & Wigston of Derby the eight- day duration, timepiece movement with a large planetary wheel to the epicyclic gearing and an anchor escapement, with brass c-scroll frame, the skeletonised dial with Roman numerals and blued steel moon hands, height 25 cm, not including case. * William Strutt was fascinated by epicyclic gearing the design of which this clock was based. He persuaded his friend, the clockmaker William Wigston of Derby, to manufacture a number of examples. £200 - 250

767 768 An early Victorian ebonised quarter- chiming bracket clock the eight- day duration, triple-fusee movement with anchor escapement, chiming the quarters on eight-bells and the hours on a further bell, the backplate fully engraved with floral decoration, the seven-inch brass break-arch dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and meeting-arrow half-hour markings, with cast brass floral corner spandrels, a matted centre and decorative blued steel hands, the arch with a subsidiary ‘chime/ silent’ dial, the ebonised break-arch case with cast female-head mounts to the canted corners, cast brass finials to the top corners, brass frets to the sides, and standing on decorative cast brass feet, height 40 cm. 768 £800 – 1200 200 769 Ellicot, Royal Exchange, a mahogany bracket clock the eight-day duration, double-fusee movement striking the hours on a bell, the eight-inch round convex painted dial with black Roman hour numerals, blued steel decorative hands and signed ‘Ellicot, Royal Exchange’, the mahogany dome topped case with inlaid stringing to the front, glazed sides and a brass carrying handle to the top, standing on brass ball feet, height 42 cm. £200 - 300

* Various members of the Ellicott family are recorded working in London, descended from John Ellicott who was working at St. Swithin’s Alley, Royal Exchange, London having come from Bodmin, Cornwall as a child. He was a Freeman of the Clockmakers Company from 1696 until his death in May 1733 at which time he was succeeded by his son, also John, both eminent clockmakers. His son Edward joined John in partnership from circa 1758 working until his death in 1791 at which point clocks were signed ‘Ellicott’. His son, also Edward, then continued the business, also at Royal Exchange, being free of the Clockmakers company in 1795 until his death in 1835, he being the maker working at the date of manufacture of this 769 clock.

770 John Bennett, 65 Cheapside, London, a mahogany bracket timepiece the eight-day duration, single fusee timepiece movement having an anchor escapement, the seven-inch round silvered dial engraved with black Roman numerals and signed ‘Bennett, 65 Cheapside, London, Maker to the Admiralty’, with blued steel spade hands, the dial within a dome top setting with carved acorn decoration to the surround, standing on a rectangular break-front base with an inset panel and flat feet, height 42.5 cm.

*John Bennett, FRAS, an eminent maker, is recorded working in Cheapside, London from before 1857 until at least 1863, becoming Sir John Bennett and continuing at the Cheapside address until Circa 1883.

771 Gustav Becker, Germany, a walnut ‘’ regulator wall clock the eight-day duration, weight driven movement with maintaining power, adjustable pallets to the dead-beat escapement and a wood-rod pendulum with brass bob, striking on a gong, the backplate stamped with the trademark of Gustav Becker, a mark showing the award for the Medaille d’Or won at the 1852 Trade Exposition and serial number 19639, giving a date of manufacture of circa 1866, the walnut veneered case having turned finials to the top and bottom, with an architectural pediment top, glazed front and sides and Corinthian capitals to the fluted trunk pillars, with a burr walnut panel to the backboard and various further panels to the case front, the two-piece white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and decorative blued steel hands, height 130 cm. £1000 - 1200

* Gustav Becker was born in 1819 and trained in both Germany and Austria before operating on his own account in 1850 in Freiburg, Silesia, Germany. It was the award of the Gold medal mentioned that set him on his way to being one of the most prolific, and better makers, of Vienna-style regulator wall clocks. Becker died in 1885 but the company continued making clocks until 1935 when it was taken over by the fast-expanding Junghans clockmaking concern.

772 Richard Tracy fecit a brass lantern clock the thirty-hour duration movement striking on a bell with an outside countwheel, now with an anchor escapement but with signs of an original verge escapement to the top, the dial engraved with tulip design to the centre and signed ‘Richard Tracy fecit’, the six-inch chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and half-hour markings, with a decorative blued steel hand, the case with turned pillars, cast finials, engraved dolphin fret to the front and two further plain dolphin frets to the sides, with the bell set below the brass straps surmounted by a further finial, height 38 cm. (with restorations)

* Richard Tracy is recorded as being apprenticed in London in 1660. £1200-1500

203 773 Robert Alexander, Leith, a mahogany longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch arched brass dial engraved with black Roman numerals, floral corner spandrels, having a raised boss to the arch engraved ‘Tempus Fugit’ having engraved winged serpents to either side, the dial centre with subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and maker’s signature ‘Robert Alexander, Leith’, with decorative brass hands, the mahogany case with a break-arch trunk door, curved moulding to the hood with a fan finial to the centre and three-quarter turned columns, with a plain base, standing on bracket feet, height 206 cm. £400 - 600

* Robert Alexander Snr, is recorded as a clock and watchmaker at Tolbooth Wynd and Shore, Leith, Mid Lothian from 1751 until circa 1825. He married Margaret Ferguson and had various children including Robert Jnr, born 5th June 1741. Robert Jnr is recorded as a watch, clock and compass maker at Shore, Leith. He signed a petition against the 1797 tax on clocks and died at an ‘advanced age’ at Rosebank, Broughton Road, on the 24th of March 1830.

A similar dial signed for Alexander of Leith is illustrated in Clock & Watchmakers of Scotland, by Donald Whyte, Fig 7. where it is noted that ‘single-sheet dials became popular in Scotland. Edinburgh in particular developed a distinctive style of engraving with scrolling foliage terminating in fearsome eagle’s or dragon’s heads’.

775 Maple & Co, London, an oak quarter chiming longcase clock the eight-day duration, weight driven movement chiming the quarters on four gongs and the hour on a further four gongs, the twelve-inch round brass dial with floral engraving to the centre and signed ‘Maple & Co, London’, with the silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and ‘fleur-de-lys’ half-hour markings, the oak case with a glazed oval aperture to the trunk door with brass fishscale fretwork to the four corners, a raised panel to the base, a double plinth, canted corners to the base, trunk and hood and surmounted by a shallow pagoda top, height 222 cm. £500 – 700

205 776 Gaydon, Barnstaple, a Victorian shop regulator the eight-day duration timepiece movement with a dead-beat escapement, maintaining power, adjustable pallets, a wood rod pendulum with large brass bob and a brass bound weight, the twelve-inch round silvered dial with typical regulator layout, with outer minutes and two subsidiary dials for seconds and hours and engraved with the name ‘Gaydon, Barnstaple’, the mahogany case with a glazed front door, canted corners, an inset panel to the base and a pediment top, height 204 cm.

* This regulator was removed from the shop premises of Garland & Winkles at 99, High Street, Barnstaple on it’s closure some twenty years ago. They were successors to Gaydon and it is believed that this was the shop regulator used by John Gaydon during his time as a clock and watchmaker.

* John Gaydon is recorded as working at 99 High Street, Barnstaple from circa 1855 until his death in 1895, as both a clockmaker and jeweller. He supplied a clock for the town’s police station in 1855 as well as another for the Globe Hotel which had double dials, one showing in the bar and the other in the smoking room. The business supplied various church and public clocks with that at Swimbridge church having an inscription dated 1880 in commemoration of the restoration of the church with the clock supplied and given by the Gaydon brothers , including John of Barnstaple and three other brothers now resident at Brentford, but all having been ‘natives of Swimbridge’.

An almost identical shop regulator, but with a curved moulding above the dial, was sold by Hampton & Littlewood Auctioneers in January 2007, signed on the dial ‘Gregory, Exeter’ with the case almost certainly from the same cabinet maker.

206 777 Hewitt, Marlborough, an oak longcase clock the thirty-hour birdcage movement, with turned pillars striking the hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the eleven-inch square painted dial with black Roman numerals, floral decoration to the corner spandrels, the dial with further decoration and signed ‘Hewitt’, with a date aperture, the date disc stamped to the rear with the name of the dialmaker ‘Wilson, B’ham’, with decorative blued steel hands, the hood to the flat- top case with gilt wood capitals to the three-quarter columns, fluted canted corners to the trunk and a plain base, height 193 cm. £500 - 700

* George Hewitt is recorded working in Marlborough, Wiltshire making fine musical and astronomical clocks from circa 1720. His son, also George and the maker of this clock, is recorded working from before 1795. 777

* James Wilson is considered the most prolific and important of painted dial makers, working in Great Charles Street, Birmingham from 1777 until at least 1809. His style is most distinctive and no two dials made by his firm are the same.

778 William B Crisp, London, a 19th century walnut regulator the eight-day duration, weight driven movement with maintaining power, a dead-beat escapement, adjustable pallets, five-spoke wheelwork, adjustable cap to the ‘scape wheel arbor and a mercury filled bob to the pebulum set with a beat regulation scale below, the twelve-inch round silvered dial of typical regulator layout with minutes to the outer aspect and two subsidiary dials to the centre showing seconds and hours, signed across the centre ‘Willm. B. Crisp, London’, with blued steel hands, the walnut dome topped case with an inset panel to the base, glazed trunk door, and carved floriate decoration to the fretwork below the dial, height 182 cm. £3000 - 4000

* William B Crisp, born 1825, is recorded as working at 81, St John Street, Clerkenwell from circa 1858 until 1865 before moving to 174, St John Street and finally to 133, Liverpool Road. He worked for the great chronometer maker Robert Molyneux and was a founder member of the British Horological Institute in 1858, becoming a well-known commentator on chronometer matters. He was made bankrupt in 1879 and died in the Clockmakers’ Asylum, New Southgate in 1895, His son of the same name was also known maker.

778 207 779 John Clark, London, a mahogany pagoda- top longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the twelve-inch arched silvered dial engraved with black Roman hour numerals and Arabic five-minute outer numerals, engraved within the dial centre with the maker’s name Jno Clark, Mark Lane, London, with a silvered ‘strike/silent’ dial within the arch, the mahogany case with a break-arch trunk door, the base with a shaped panel and standing on a double plinth, the hood with fluted hood columns, the pagoda top having two fluted blocks with brass ball- and-spire finials to either side with a further finial to the top, standing on bracket feet, height 248cm.

* John Clark is recorded as working in Mark Lane, London from before 1799 until at least 1824. £1100 - 1200

780 John Corti, a mahogany stick barometer the silvered dial shaped to the base and engraved with the usual scales with a thermometer to the side and signed ‘Jno Corti fecit’, with a large hygrometer dial set above with setting knob below, the mahogany case with a visible tube, architectural pediment top with a turned brass vase finial, Sheraton-style fan inlay to the four corners of the hygrometer dial, and herring- bone stringing to the edges and round cistern cover height 109 cm.

* John Corti is recorded as an important maker working from 1815 at 27, Leather Lane, London until 1825 and thence at 35, Eyre Street, Hatton Garden, London until at least 1864. It is possible he also worked at 94, Holborn Hill at some point.
