Sahara Sponsors Epic Battle As Cricket Students Take on the Masters Sahara sponsors epic battle as cricket students take on the masters Sahara Computers’ sponsorship of the Sahara St. David’s Twenty 20 Schools Cricket Festival has brought about a unique opportunity for tomorrow’s cricket stars to take to the pitch against current professionals and icons of the past. The annual festival, which this year runs from 11 September till 14 September, was hosted by St. David’s Marist Inanda and provided a platform for the best school players to launch careers and ultimately gain national recognition. This year visitors to the festival once again saw a number of high schools participating, including: St David’s, King Edward VII, St Stithians College, St Johns College, St Albans, Affies, Maritzburg College, Grey College (Bloem), Grey High School (PE), Hudson Park (EL), Pretoria Boys High (PTA), KPT X1 (Development Team Gauteng Provincial players U19) and St Charles (PMB). Schoolboys from each school and the Development IX will make up a combined Schools XI to play against a team of legends, the Legends XI comprising heroes of the sport, both past and present. This year sees the addition of a live Supersport broadcast of the featured match between these two sides, with a number of high profile cricketers taking part, including Fanie de Villiers, Makhaya Ntini, Neil McKenzie, JP Duminy, Loots Bosman, Gulam Bodi amongst others. The team coach will be former South African wicket keeper and Proteas coach Ray Jennings who is also the current SA U19 coach so its presents a great opportunity for the boys to showcase their talents. The featured match was broadcast live on Supersport 5 Sahara Computers is a primary naming rights sponsor of the event, which originated through Kent Park Taverners (KPT) and first took place in September 2007. The global company and supplier of information, communication and digital lifestyle technology is widely recognized for its ongoing contribution towards the growth and development of the sport in South Africa. The Sahara brand is widely associated with sponsorship of three key cricketing unions in the Western Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Eastern Cape, representing Sahara Park Newlands, Sahara Stadium Kingsmead and Sahara Oval St. Georges respectively. Atul Gupta, chairman and MD at Sahara, believes the company’s involvement represents a meaningful and lasting contribution to the sport, at all levels. “Corporate sponsorship in sport is critical, few would debate this point. But we have truly embraced this responsibility and opportunity to grow our participation to the point where we are making a real impact on the future of the game and its athletes. It is rare for players at school to have an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to an audience of this size and stature, but even more unique is the opportunity to test their skills against recognized local icons and highly experienced players,” says Gupta. Shane Gaffney, spokesperson for St. David’s Marist, echoed the points raised by Gupta and said sponsorship is vital for initiatives like this to be established and sustained. There are long term objectives in addition to the immediate benefits. “This is a national festival which offers players an opportunity to be exposed to this format of the game. It is really about developing the quality of players with the idea that this experience, of the format and of engaging with highly experienced and recognized players, will add value to involvement in other, longer formats of the sport, such as one day international and tests. We would like to see an increase in spectator value and general appreciation for the game, and we are indebted to our sponsors for their continued support,” adds Gaffney. He celebrated his benefit season in style by scoring 1000 runs in a season for the first time: 1090 runs at the impressive average of 57.36. His aggregate would have been even higher had he not missed four matches through injury. He enjoyed a glorious end to the season. In the last four Championship matches he struck 513 runs at the almost Bradmanesque average of 85.50. He began the sequence with a century in each innings (103 and 106) at Taunton, followed it with 80 against Yorkshire at The Ageas Bowl and then 158 at The Oval. He finished with 50 and 16 versus Durham at home. He had earlier made 123 Yorkshire at Headingley and 93 at Chester-le-Street. He has always been the most watchable of batsmen. He seemingly has time to spare and is a very clean striker of the ball, with shots all round the wicket.

The Race Chase: The Colour of Cricket Transformation in South Africa Ashwin Desai Department of Sociology, University of Johannesburg [email protected] Biographical Details Ashwin Desai is Professor of Sociology at the University of Johannesburg. His latest book is entitled ‘Reverse Sweep: A Story of South African Cricket since Apartheid’. The Race Chase: The Colour of Cricket Transformation in South Africa Abstract South African cricket (re)entered international cricket in 1991, a few years before the country’s first democratic elections. A tour of India was a prelude to playing in the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. From the outset of “unity”, cricket was lauded for its transformation programme and for making a decisive break with the past. This break was epitomised by the team being called the Proteas rather than the Springboks. Despite this and on-going efforts to transform the team into a more representative one, issues of racism and racial representation have continued to haunt the game. Questions are persistently raised about racial targets and interference in selection from on high. At local level, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has now made it mandatory that franchises and semi-professional teams be obliged to include six players of colour, of whom three must be Black Africans, raising concerns about deliberate racial engineering. These apprehensions have been exacerbated by increasing calls for national teams to reflect the racial demographics of the country. This article looks at issues of race and representivity in South African cricket post- unity, seeking to probe allegations of racism, as well as how CSA has approached issues of racial representation in the form of quotas and the possible effects of this on the game.
