BIO DeLaughter’s career began in 1991 as vocalist/guitarist of the Dallas-based alternative rock band Tripping Daisy . Inspired by the Beatles’ psychedelic period, the group was signed to Island Records and released four acclaimed albums before disbanding as a result of the untimely death of guitarist Wes Berggren from a drug overdose in 1999. After leaving music for a brief time to start his family, DeLaughter soon found the lure of a return to performing and recording irresistible. The result was the Dallas symphonic pop group The Polyphonic Spree . Described as less a band than a happening, the group’s two dozen members perform in flowing white robes – an appropriate backdrop for their happy, uplifting musical message of catchy pop laced with gospel. The unusual group boasts a ten-member choir, a pair of keyboardists, a percussionist, bassist, guitarist, flautist, trumpeter, trombonist, violist, French horn player and even a theremin player, with DeLaughter serving as musical director, lead singer, and creative shaman. Generating huge interest with their performance at Austin’s South-by-Southwest music festival in 2002, the Spree were eventually hand-picked by David Bowie to play his Meltdown Festival at London’s Royal Festival Hall, and later signed to Hollywood The Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency, Inc. -

Toadies Bring Dia De Los Toadies Festival Home
TOADIES BRING DIA DE LOS TOADIES FESTIVAL HOME A DOZEN BANDS TO PLAY ACROSS TWO STAGES AT PANTHER ISLAND PAVILION IN SEPTEMBER AT SIXTH ANNUAL DIA DE LOS TOADIES FESTIVAL. FORT WORTH – After five years of hosting their annual end-of-summer throw down at various locations throughout the state, the Toadies are taking the sixth Dia De Los Toadies to their hometown of Fort Worth. This year’s festival, set to feature a dozen bands performing across two stages, will take place on Saturday, September 14, at Panther Island Pavilion, just minutes from downtown Fort Worth. Per tradition, the band will also host an intimate “fireside/almost acoustic” showcase on Friday, September 13, the evening before their day-long bash. Since Dia De Los Toadies 2008 debut, in conjunction with the band’s return-to-the-spotlight No Deliverance LP, the festival has evolved into one of the most hotly anticipated events on Texas’ yearly music calendar -- a carefully curated and reliably rocking affair that’s seen memorable performances from such celebrated acts as Ben Kweller, Black Angels, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, Bowling for Soup, Centro-matic, Heartless Bastards, Helmet, Mariachi El Bronx, Riverboat Gamblers, The Secret Machines and The Sword, plus dozens of up-and-coming, underground acts from the Toadies home turf of Texas. “It's been great moving the Dia festival around Texas, but at a certain point, we realized that we need to share it with our hometown, Fort Worth, where the band is still based. We played Billy Bob's last year and it reminded us what a hometown crowd is like, so moving the festival made perfect sense,” says Toadies guitarist, Clark Vogeler. -

Clippers Hawai‘i Night HONOLULU – All eyes were on Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning recording artist Josh Tatofi tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles as he brought his upbeat sounds of the Hawaiian Islands to L.A. Clippers and Boston Celtics fans during a special halftime show. Tatofi performed his new single titled “Melia” released today as part of the L.A. Clippers “Hawai‘i Night” celebration. Through the support of Hawai‘i’s tourism industry, the performance gave those in attendance an opportunity to experience the Islands’ unique culture and aloha spirit. To kick off Hawai‘i Night at the Staples Center, hula dancers from three Los Angeles-based hula hālau performed in the promenade as fans arrived. Hawai‘i’s own Jasmine Trias, former American Idol star, performed the National Anthem prior to tip-off. The first 5,000 fans to enter the arena also received a Hawaiian Shirt Rally Towel, which featured a white floral print on a blue background. As timing would have it, the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors men’s basketball team was also in attendance and received a warm welcome as they were recognized on the Jumbotron. A high school production of Jesus Christ Superstar or annual Branch Davidian jamboree? Polyphonic Spree Hallelujah Time Everybody has voices in their head. Little angels and devils telling us to sing nice gospel tracks about God and videotape yourself having sex with your underage "goddaughter." For Tim DeLaughter, it wasn't a voice so much as a sound. The sound he heard made about as much logical sense as "If you build it, they will come" but has had nearly as magical effect on those who've witnessed his musical equivalent of a baseball diamond in a cornfield. Like anyone who has had a song lodged in their head, no matter how much you like it, it becomes a nuisance after while—backseat driver to all the other things you'd rather think about. A soundtrack that fits on one side of a 45 and loops the last groove into itself. You'd do anything to get it out of your head. So, DeLaughter did something remarkable. He rounded up a posse, and gave birth to one of the more intriguing musical phenomena to hit the scene since Parliament. This is the story of a troupe of 24 choir-robed freaks called the Polyphonic Spree. You might have seen them on the MTV Video Music Awards, introduced by Marilyn Manson who claimed the band was the love child spawned by him and co-presenter Mandy Moore. Maybe the news clip about the mic that was mistaken for a pipe bomb and shut down a major airport. Perhaps you caught them when they opened for David Bowie on his recent tour. -

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Hip-hop, Streetdance, and the Remaking of the Global Filipino by Jeffrey Lorenzo Perillo Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Susan Leigh Foster, Committee Co-Chair Professor Victor Bascara, Committee Co-Chair New York-based African American, Latino, and Caribbean immigrant youth of the 1960s and early 1970s gave life to one of the world's major contemporary cultural movements: Hip-hop. Initially misunderstood as a faddish form of Black male musical expression, Hip-hop's cultural resistance practices were quickly recognized as four core elements (emceeing, turntablism, graffiti art, and b-boying/b-girling). In the global context, Hip-hop has generated scholarly discourse that points to either the cultural globalization of American Blackness or a "global village." My project interrupts this conversation and focuses on the unique, multi-site cultural history of Filipino identity as constituted through practitioners of Hip-Hop dance. My work argues that a community of Filipinos, situated in different geo-political loci—Berkeley, California, Honolulu, Hawai‘i, and Manila, Philippines—configure prevailing concepts of Hip-hop while remaking conditions of ! ii dispossession and displacement in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. -
