Hawai‘i’s own Jasmine Trias, former American Idol star, performed the National Anthem prior to tip-off. The first 5,000 fans to enter the arena also received a Hawaiian Shirt Rally Towel, which featured a white floral print on a blue background. As timing would have it, the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors men’s basketball team was also in attendance and received a warm welcome as they were recognized on the Jumbotron. ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Hip-hop, Streetdance, and the Remaking of the Global Filipino by Jeffrey Lorenzo Perillo Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Susan Leigh Foster, Committee Co-Chair Professor Victor Bascara, Committee Co-Chair New York-based African American, Latino, and Caribbean immigrant youth of the 1960s and early 1970s gave life to one of the world's major contemporary cultural movements: Hip-hop. Initially misunderstood as a faddish form of Black male musical expression, Hip-hop's cultural resistance practices were quickly recognized as four core elements (emceeing, turntablism, graffiti art, and b-boying/b-girling). In the global context, Hip-hop has generated scholarly discourse that points to either the cultural globalization of American Blackness or a "global village." My project interrupts this conversation and focuses on the unique, multi-site cultural history of Filipino identity as constituted through practitioners of Hip-Hop dance. My work argues that a community of Filipinos, situated in different geo-political loci—Berkeley, California, Honolulu, Hawai‘i, and Manila, Philippines—configure prevailing concepts of Hip-hop while remaking conditions of ! ii dispossession and displacement in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Aquino Centerfor Philippine Studies University ofHawaii at Manoa How does one capture the essence of a hundred years? We are reminded of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Nobel Prize-winning, Cien Afios de Soledad: A Hundred Years of Solitude. Using his signature literary style called "magical realism," Marquez crafts a brilliant epic story of love, loss, death and renewal in the mythical village of Macondo, covering a hundred years of the original protagonist, Jose Arcadio Buendia, and his descendants. It is highly comic but at the same time deeply tragic. Solitude or not, it isn't just another story. It's a story that engages our sense of human survival. It is about the indestructibility of the human spirit, the enduring theme of all great literature. The world of the plantation in Hawaii wasn't so mythical as Macondo. It was starkly real. For the first 15 bewildered Filipino sakadas (migrant workers) who got off the S.S. Doric on December 20,1906, amid stares of curious onlookers, the world before them was one of foreboding. The feudal plantation system and its oppressive need for abundant cheap labor was already entrenched when they arrived. Life for them would be much more than solitude. It would be more like a crucible serving up the severest of tests for human endurance. Ten to 12­ hour days of backbreaking work in the canefields under a searing sun, a miserable dollar- a ­ day wage, homelessness, rootlessness, isolation, loneliness, vulnerability to the luna's wrath, suffering and other human hardships would be the essence of their existence.

His research has recently been published in the proceedings of the Joint Statistics Meetings of the American Statistical Association and the International Conference on Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. His work on analyzing data from reality-television shows including American Idol has been featured in the Washington Post, Sun-Sentinel, Vancouver Sun, and Montreal Gazette. Gershman also has been featured on South Florida's Local 10 (ABC affiliate) and WSVN 7News (FOX affiliate) to talk about his research work in this area and provide expert commentary and predictions.

The study includes discourse analyses of the first seven seasons of the program, of the season seven official American Idol message boards, and of the 2002 and 2008 show press coverage. The American themes included a rags-to-riches narrative, archetypes, and celebrity. The discourse-formed archetypes indicate which archetypes people of varied races may inhabit, who may be sexual, and what kinds of sexuality are permitted. On the show emotional exhibitions, archetypal resonance, and talent create a seemingly authentic celebrity while discourse positioning confirms this celebrity. The show also fostered a complication-free national American collective identity through the show discourse, while the online message boards facilitated the formation of two types of collective identities: a large group of American Idol fans and smaller contestant-affiliated fan groups. Finally, the press coverage study found two overtones present in the 2002 coverage, derision and awe, which were absent in the 2008 coverage. The primary reasons for this absence may be reluctance to criticize an immensely popular show and that the American Idol success was no longer surprising by 2008. By 2008, American Idol was so ingrained within American culture that to deride it was to critique America itself.
