book reviews 405 Bernard Diederich Seeds of Fiction: Graham Greene’s Adventures in Haiti and Central America, 1954–1983. London: Peter Owen, 2012. 315 pp. (Cloth us$29.95) Former Latin America correspondent Bernard Diederich’s account of his rela- tionship with Graham Greene and their journeys to Haiti and Central America from the 1950s to the 1980s is a most valuable memoir and resource for those interested in the peripatetic author and the troubled Cold War politics of the region. The renowned twentieth-century British writer gives the now retired journalist the perfect entrée to his specialist subject of Latin America in a book that is neatly divided into two equal parts, firstly dealing with Greene in Haiti and later in Central America. Diederich, a New Zealander by birth, details his first brief encounters with Greene from 1954 onward in Haiti, where the correspondent had set up an English-language weekly newspaper and lived with his Haitian wife. Like many writers and artists, Greene was attracted by the exotic black Caribbean repub- lic, independent since 1804. But Haiti’s relative peace was ruined from 1957 by the autocratic rule of country physician François “Papa Doc” Duvalier, who soon ruled the ex-French colony as a repressive dictator, many of his subjects mesmerized by his cultivation of Voodoo. The early part of Diederich’s book gives an overview of Haitian history and is interspersed with travelogue. His newspaper’s anti-Duvalierist stance courts the wrath of the country’s self-appointed president-for-life and his Tontons Macoutes, a murderous plain-clothes militia. -

Certainly everything has been written; files have been closed for years, wearing out the publicity enthusiasts themselves, having been read so many times. His dull childhood at Berkhamstead School; his suici- dal adolescence (helped by Russian roulette). His years at the Foreign Office; his position in at the English Catholic Writers' club (between Evelyn Waugh and Victor S. Pritchett). All that is missing to fill the bill is a reputation of being a womaniser and manic depressive. In the centre of all this bric à brac reigns an image of the owner (face swollen and red from alcohol, mouth mangled by dentists and extraordinary blue eyes as though lurking below the prow of a ship) but also and above all, his work; twenty or so novels, five collections of short stories, tales of his journeys, his essays, not to mention his autobiography in two volumes.- itself preceded in the tradition of Henry James, by a quantity of introductions to novels published by Robert Laffont in France ± without doubt to discourage over zealous readers from confusing the writer's reality with the fiction's logic. The thesis will be primarily concerned with the relationship of the central characters of Greene's novels to their environment. I will try to show how this relationship, which in Greene's early novels is often fatalistic and deterministic, changes as Greene becomes more concerned with the possibilities of a spiritual and moral 'awakening' within his heroes which can perhaps counter• balance the forces of determinism. -

A Study of Graham Greene The Pinkies (V) Shoko Miyano VII * This is a continuation of the preceding chapters, “The Pinkies ( 1 ) 一(IV) ”'), the points' of which have been to demonst'rate the evil charac- ters, Pinkie in Brighton Rocfe (1938) and RaVen in A Gun for Sale (1936)2), and to clarify the significances of their characters. The purp6se of this chapter is similarly to eXamine specific qualities of the evil characters, especially the villainous figure of Harry Lime in The Third Man (1950)3), including those・ of Sir Marcus and Davis in A Gun for Sa!e. All of these characters are described as villains in the works of Graham Greene in his earlier career. The Third Man was originally written in preparation for a screen- play, not for publishing as a novel. Gtaham Greene describes the course from its outset to 一publication and mentions that “The Third Man, therefore, though never intended for publication, had to start as a story before those apparently interminable transformations from one treat- ment to another,” and “The Third Man was never intended to be more. than the raw material for a picture.” He also states that “ [t]he film, in fact, is better than the story because it is in this case the finished state of the story.”‘) There is, consequently, a slight inclination to regard The Third (77) A Study of Graham Greene Man as a work lacking integrity, but, as A. But something did also shift. He also contributed hundreds of essays and film and book reviews to The Spectator and other journals, many of which appear in the late collection Reflections. A process that is, it seems, just about to start all over again. The country is divided somewhat between the "civilized" coastal areas and the "uncivilized" and unmapped - hence the title interior. There was a general sense of clunking and clanking, of parts being rearranged. A Brit traveling around Africa with a dozen native porters carrying everything from his knickers to his whiskey and barely ever naming his traveling-companion cousin could have made for quite a comic travel account. Everybody has taken a hit here. Greene took two, rather ropey ones produced for military planners from Britain and the US. More Details Readers also enjoyed. For English football this really is a journey without maps, an attempt to return to some modified version of reality at a time when the limits of the possible seem to shift every few days. His cousin also completes the journey with him, but she barely gets a mention, and in fact often you will forget that she is his travelling companion until there is another throwaway reference. Next up: a first step into the wild frontier that is the Premier League. -

Graham Greene himself had worked as something of an agent for the British during the war, and so he brought a certain amount of first hand knowledge to the project; in addition, Greene did on-site research in Vienna. Eventually, Carol Reed's film was made from a treatment written by Greene in 1948. While Greene knew he was writing a film, he first constructed The Third Man in the form of a noir novella; as Greene notes in the pref- ace, his novella "was never meant to read, but only to be seen" (7). There are several important alterations that occurred through the process of transforming the novella, and as Greene admits in the preface to the published version of the novella, most are for the better. Greene explains his process by saying that in order to construct the screenplay and present fully realized characters as well as "mood" and "atmosphere," "[o]ne must have more material than one needs to draw on" (8).
