Fjestad, Larry Meiners : The Gibson Flying V before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised The Gibson Flying V: 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Everything about The Mighty VBy SGsStratsI just received this book in the mail yesterday and I love it. From design beginnings to a complete model listing with production dates and factories to headstock designs, it's all in here. There's even a section on the cases! My first lasting impression from the Flying V was as an 8 year old kid in '65 watching "Shindig" and The Kinks came on. They played "Tired Of Waiting" and there was Dave Davies with his Korina V, playing it with his arm in the fork of the body. Well, this book mentions not only when and where Dave bought his V but how much he paid for it (you won't believe it).I've been a V fan ever since from Andy Powell to the Schenker Brothers to Dave Meniketti (the first Yesterday and Today album) and Albert King and beyond. I wish the color section was a bit longer but everything else about this book is outstanding. Great detail about the Hendrix "Flying Angels" as he called them with photos of Jimi in action as well. The "Flying V Wanna- Bees" section is great also with coverage on Epiphone,Dean,Hamer and Ibanez models. This book is awesome and will give me hours of enjoyment. Now if I could just find that used Epi '67 style I've been looking for.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.

  • 7.9 the Wood Determines the Sound?
7-102 7. Neck and body of the guitar 7.9 The Wood Determines the Sound? Mahogany! Maple! Rosewood! Men oft believe, if only they hear wordy pother, that there must surely be in it some thought or other [Goethe]. And the usual thinking is: “the electric guitar is a musical instrument made of wood. In all musical instruments made of wood, the wood determines the sound. The more noble the wood, the more noble the sound.” Goethe’s witch’s kitchen – a suitable location for deception and magic – holds more such articles of faith, but let us keep some distance from alchemy, and give physics the priority here: how does the body of the guitar vibrate, and in what way will the vibration of this body influence the sound? In the material-science course, every luthier learns about different tonewoods and their sound-determining material-parameters: “the denser the wood, the more brilliant, treble- rich the sound; the higher the stiffness, the longer the sustain (P. Day).” As if that were self- evident, this statement and similar ones are based on the assumption that the findings that are valid for violins and acoustic guitars apply to electric guitars, as well. If we now add that board of experts who listen to an electric guitar first of all without amplification, we quickly arrive at a conglomerate of teachings that, between them, could not be more contradictory. All the while two simple principles would really help us: 1) Compared to the acoustic guitar, the electric guitar functions very differently. Findings derived from the one type of guitar may not be sight-unseen applied to the other type.

  • Strategic Intertextuality in Three of John Lennonâ•Žs Late Beatles Songs
STRATEGIC INTERTEXTUALITY IN THREE OF JOHN LENNON’S LATE BEATLES SONGS* MARK SPICER his article will focus on an aspect of the Beatles’ compositional practice that I believe T merits further attention, one that helps to define their late style (that is, from the ground- breaking album Revolver [1966] onwards) and which has had a profound influence on all subsequent composers of popular music: namely, their method of drawing on the resources of pre-existing music (or lyrics, or both) when writing and recording new songs. This may at first seem entirely obvious, especially since nowadays such a practice has been adopted routinely by many songwriters and producers, and is in fact the prevailing compositional strategy within certain pop and rock genres, rap being probably the most blatant example. Many rap artists are well known for their so-called “rap versions,” as Tim Hughes has described them, in which a distinctive element of a pre-existing song is lifted out of its original context—typically via digital sampling—and used as the foundation upon which a new song is built.1 Will Smith’s hit “Wild Wild West” (1999), for example, is composed around a sample of the bass-driven main groove from Stevie Wonder’s funk classic “I Wish” (1976); and Eminem’s hit “Like Toy Soldiers” * This essay is based in part on the first chapter of my dissertation, “British Pop-Rock Music in the Post-Beatles Era” (Ph.D. dissertation, Yale University, 2001). An earlier version was presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Music Theory, Columbus, in November 2002.

EXHIBITION RESOURCE PACKET Medieval to Metal: The Art and Evolution of the Guitar MEDIEVAL TO METAL: THE ART AND EVOLUTION OF THE GUITAR September 29th, 2018-January 6th, 2019 How to use this resource: This packet is designed to be flexible. Use it to help prepare for a docent-led tour of the museum, to inform a self-guided tour, or to discuss selected artworks in your classroom, whether you’re able to physically visit the museum or not. The suggested activities (page 7) should be used in conjunction with in-depth discussion of at least one related artwork. The guitar has been a signature element of world culture for more than 500 years. As the guitar’s ancestors evolved over centuries from the earliest ouds and lutes to the signature hourglass shape we all know today, guitar makers experimented with shapes, materials, and accessories, seeking the perfect blend of beauty and sound. Spanning centuries of design and craftsmanship, this exhibition takes visitors through the history of an object that is one of the most recognizable items on the planet. Art and music transcend cultural boundaries while the most recognized musical instrument—the guitar—has influenced culture beyond music. Through the years the guitar and its shape have been integral elements for artists such as Vermeer and Picasso and today they are incorporated into the advertisements of everything from clothes to car. What guitars are in the show? The following 40 guitars are included in the exhibition: Oud (North Africa) Maccaferri Plastic Lute (Europe) Silvertone 1487 Speaker
