II Abstract This study targets specific works written by Afro-American women writers. It analyses Alice Walker’s The Color Purple (1982), Zora Neal Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), Nella Larsen’s Quicksand (1928), Toni Morrison’s Sula (1973), and Gloria Naylor’s The Women of Brewster Place (1982) from a Black feminist perspective. The research work adopts the reader-response theory approach focusing on the necessity of black women’s struggle to challenge and overthrow racial and patriarchal injustices and limitations in order to generate an independent selfhood. The purpose of this thesis is to explore black women’s quest for selfhood and desire to contrive stout identities despite the intersectional obstructions. This work explains the way these women writers highlight the female protagonists’ persistent efforts to overthrow the limited constructions about black womanhood, defy the domineering patriarchal and racial forces, conceive various innovative means to pursue self- fulfillment, and change their state from being objectified and dominated individuals to individuals with a self-determining selfhood. Each woman character approaches her selfhood differently depending on her surrounding and the conditions she is living in. Because these writers focus on underscoring black women’s unique experience, their works not only disrupt the myopic representations of black women, but mostly become the emblem of a rooted tradition that approaches black female women’s selfhood as a rhizomatic rather than an arborescent entity. Though not all the novels are a confirmation of the women’s ultimate victory, they all highlight their maturity, psychological and moral development. After all, the route towards emancipation and self-fulfillment is more important than women’s eventual victory. These are all novels that explore and focus on the growth and maturity of women characters. They are novels of apprenticeship in the way they highlight the changing consciousness, personal growth, and profound comprehension of the female characters’ inner selves and social surrounding. Abstract There is a dark mythology surrounding the post-punk band Joy Division that tends to foreground the personal history of lead singer Ian Curtis. However, when evaluating the construction of Joy Division’s public image, the contributions of several other important figures must be addressed. This thesis shifts focus onto the peripheral figures who played key roles in the construction and perpetuation of Joy Division’s image. The roles of graphic designer Peter Saville, of television presenter and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, and of photographers Kevin Cummins and Anton Corbijn will stand as examples in this discussion of cultural intermediaries and collaborators in popular music.

FORSTER by BARBARA ANN HOAK *P60 06900 ZLZ L A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS Thesis Director*s signature: May# 1965 ABSTRACT This thesis is a study in the fiction of E. M* Forster of a principle which has been named the "symbolic moment•" The symbolic moment is defined as a short period of time which has the effect of removing character or reader from consciousness of the continual flu:: of mundane occurrences since it has the potential of revealing something universalt a kind of reality beyond the everyday human life processes. This thesis demonstrates that one way of seeing the struc¬ ture of Forster* s works is as a series of symbolic moments which are more vivid and more meaningful than everything happening between them, since they juxtapose levels of reality or meaning in incidents which often have archetypal reference. The thesis examines Forster’s ideas about the structure of the novel and concludes that the symbolic moment prin¬ ciple fits in with Forster’s conception of a novel as repre¬ sentation of human life, in which not all periods of time have equal significance when examined in retrospect. The symbolic moment characteristically takes the form of a confrontation—between two characters, or between a character and an object or event—which may bring about a revelation of reality if the character is prepared to accept it. The symbolic moment is examined as a focal point of structure and themes in two of Forster® s short stories: "The Eternal Moment" and "Tue Road from Colonus.” Forster’s novels are a series of symbolic moments, and in the early novels^“especially Khere Angels Fear to Tread and A Room with a View—‘Forster’& characters progress through them to some kind of growth in understanding which allows them to accept all sides of man* s good~and-evil nature.

Legg 2020 Unforgetting the Dakota 38: Settler Colonialism, Indigenous Resurgence, and the Competing Narratives of the U.S.-Dakota War, 1862-2012 John Robert Legg Abstract: “Unforgetting the Dakota 38” projects a nuanced light onto the history and memory of the mass hanging of thirty-eight Dakota men on December 26, 1862 following the U.S.-Dakota War in Southcentral Minnesota. This thesis investigates the competing narratives between Santee Dakota peoples (a mixture of Wahpeton and Mdewakanton Dakota) and white Minnesotan citizens in Mankato, Minnesota—the town of the hanging—between 1862 and 2012. By using settler colonialism as an analytical framework, I argue that the erasing of Dakotas by white historical memory has actively and routinely removed Dakotas from the mainstream historical narrative following the U.S.-Dakota War through today. This episodic history examines three phases of remembrance in which the rival interpretations of 1862 took different forms, and although the Dakota-centered interpretations were always present in some way, they became more visible to the non-Dakota society over time. Adopting a thematic approach, this thesis covers events that overlap in time, yet provide useful insights into the shaping and reshaping of memory that surrounds the mass hanging.
