“No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century by Kevin Woodger A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Kevin Woodger 2020 “No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century Kevin Woodger Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto Abstract This dissertation examines the Canadian Cadet Movement and Boy Scouts Association of Canada, seeking to put Canada’s two largest uniformed youth movements for boys into sustained conversation. It does this in order to analyse the ways in which both movements sought to form masculine national and imperial subjects from their adolescent members. Between the end of the First World War and the late 1960s, the Cadets and Scouts shared a number of ideals that formed the basis of their similar, yet distinct, youth training programs. These ideals included loyalty and service, including military service, to the nation and Empire. The men that scouts and cadets were to grow up to become, as far as their adult leaders envisioned, would be disciplined and law-abiding citizens and workers, who would willingly and happily accept their place in Canadian society. However, these adult-led movements were not always successful in their shared mission of turning boys into their ideal-type of men. The active participation and complicity of their teenaged members, as peer leaders, disciplinary subjects, and as recipients of youth training, was central to their success. -

PSYCHOLOGY AND EDUCATION (2021) 58(2): 8814-8821 ISSN: 00333077 A queer vision of Nation through nostalgic Diaspora in Shani Mootoo’s Cereus Blooms at Night 1Saikat Majumdar, 2Dr. Sandip Sarkar 1Ph.D Scholar, National Institute of Technology, Raipur 2Assistant Professor, National Institute of Technology, Raipur Abstract One of the key themes of Shani Mootoo's Cereus Blooms at Night is passing through various locations. The thematic specialization, which is decisive for debates, is expressed in physiological features and presence of the Caribbean diaspora. I try to see the novel by Mootoo as a text that not only reintroduces and reforms the unique affiliation, but also the physical and social space. She points out the value of shifting diverse bodies across different areas and interactions with each other's community by constructing a living environment that re-imagines and displaces belonging. This reveals that the vengeful concepts of belonging, diaspora history, and nationalism that run deep inside the nostalgia of the novel are embedded. Decolonization may be a scientific approach in Mootoo's novel that challenges and contradicts heteronormative ideologies as it leaves space for multiple forms of belonging by beginning to ‘to challenge, to unsettle, to queer’.(Z.Pecic.Queer Narratives of the Caribbean Diaspora, 2013.) Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 2, 174-193 Beyond Créolité and Coolitude, the Indian on the Plantation: Recreolization in the Transoceanic Frame Ananya Jahanara Kabir Kings College London [email protected] This essay explores the ways in which Caribbean artists of Indian heritage memorialize the transformation of Caribbean history, demography, and lifeways through the arrival of their ancestors, and their transformation, in turn, by this new space. Identifying for this purpose an iconic figure that I term “the Indian on the Plantation,” I demonstrate how the influential theories of Caribbean identity-formation that serve as useful starting points for explicating the play of memory and identity that shapes Indo-Caribbean artistic praxis—coolitude (as coined by Mauritian author Khal Torabully) and créolité (as most influentially articulated by the Martinican trio of Jean Barnabé, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Raphaël Confiant)—are nevertheless constrained by certain discursive limitations. Unpacking these limitations, I offer instead evidence from curatorial and quotidian realms in Guadeloupe as a lens through which to assess an emergent artistic practice that cuts across Francophone and Anglophone constituencies to occupy the Caribbean Plantation while privileging signifiers of an Indic heritage. Reading these attempts as examples of decreolization that actually suggest an ongoing and unpredictable recreolization of culture, I situate this apparent paradox within a transoceanic heuristic frame that brings -

Beyond Binary Places: The Social and Spatial Dynamics of Coming Out in Canada Nathaniel M. Lewis1 Gender and Health Promotion Studies Unit School of Health and Human Performance Dalhousie University [email protected] Abstract This article contributes to the growing body of literature linking migration to coming out among gay, lesbian, and other queer individuals. Much of the extant literature frames or imagines these migrations as journeys between sets of oppositional spaces. The common metaphorical trope of moving from inside to outside of “the closet” is frequently equated with moving from a conservative country to a more liberal one or from the homophobic countryside to an accepting metropolis. This discourse abstracts the role of place in coming-out migrations and flattens the complexity of the challenges and concerns that drive them. This analysis of migration narratives among 24 self-identified gay men living in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, frames coming-out migrations as emerging from the complex interplay of individuals’ needs and desires and the networks and institutions they occupy in places (i.e., the social dynamics of places) and not just a flat “mismatch” between one’s sexuality and a place’s containerized attributes or characteristics. The discussion elaborates on motivators for coming-out migration influenced by the social dynamics of the places that respondents were both situated in and seeking out.
