On Thursday morning during our CAS Swimming Assembly, Thomas Carey (Year 9) took a brave step and shaved his head as part of the World’s Greatest Shave. Thomas decided to do this after his sister Elisabeth was diagnosed with leukaemia. Sadly, Elisabeth passed away within a month of her diagnosis in September last year. Thomas’ bravery and strength has inspired many people, including the Waverley College CAS Swim Team. Many of their number, including their captain Adam Lawther also had their heads shaved this week in support of Thomas and this important cause. Thomas, we as a school are so proud of all the incredible work you are doing to raise awareness for this cause. You are a true inspiration and we stand beside you to change the future of blood cancer. Please find below the speech that Thomas gave during this assembly: Hi, my name is Thomas Carey. Today I am having my head shaved as part of the World’s Greatest Shave. This is in support of the Leukaemia Foundation who offers support and help with medical research into blood cancers. Just over 7 months ago, my family was affected when we found out my sister was diagnosed with leukaemia. At this time charities and foundations, such as The Leukaemia Foundation, Red Kite and Canteen, supported us. They provided information and empathy that helped us with the initial shock. Unfortunately, my sister had complications and with her reduced immune system she couldn’t fight back and she passed away. By doing the World’s Greatest Shave I can help to raise awareness and funds so that others can be supported by the Leukaemia foundation. I started this with the goal of reaching $1,200, as this would provide two weeks of transport for people who are too ill to travel after chemotherapy. Through the support of friends and family and their friends, I have been lucky to raise over $13,000. This means that The Leukaemia foundation can support over Join Waverley’s 300 families to help them get over their initial shock chemotherapy treatment and accommodation for plus provide other valuable services such as blood regional families who need to relocate to the city Greatest cancer research. for treatment. Rugby season is well and truly back. Mother Nature greeted the boys with some warm weather to contend with during our first week of training, but it was great to see our lads power through the hot conditions! On behalf of Waverley College Rugby, I would like to congratulate the Music and Drama Departments on the wonderful production of “High School Musical”. It was fantastic to see the young men and women put so much positive energy into an event which really brought the community together – something I hope we can match at Queens Park each Saturday throughout the rugby season. Preseason While our A & B squads have already commenced preseason, ALL STUDENTS will be required at preseason training next week at Queens Park. 13’s, 14’s and 15’s will train on Monday and Wednesday (3:30pm-4:45pm). 16’s and Opens will train on Tuesday and Thursday (3:30pm – 5:00pm). All rugby players will be required to bring a WATERBOTTLE. We will have water stations available (at the pavilion), but it is important that all players their own waterbottles in the hot conditions. Players may also elect to wear t-shirts instead of jerseys if conditions continue to be warm. Mario Ledesmo In the 2015 , Australia came so close to bringing ‘Bill’ back home. This was largely due to a much-improved platform provided by the Australian set piece. Part of the success came through the teachings of former Argentine Player and Coach, , who was recruited by . Ledesma held 84 caps for and is currently appointed as the Wallabies forwards coach. Last Tuesday, our senior rugby players were given the opportunity of training under the guidance of Mr Ledesma. Some of the insights were of great benefit to both senior players and coaching staff. Our players were trained in not only forming safe body positions at the scrum, but given world class advice on what it takes to be successful. We thank Mario Ledesma for his time and look forward to seeing the fruits of his coaching on the playing field in the weeks ahead. Internal Trials As indicated in the college calendar, we will be holding Internal Trials for all age groups on Saturday 19th March. All players are expected to have with them a Waverley College Jersey as well as a Coloured Jersey (non Waverley), as trial teams will be separated into Waverley Vs Colour teams. Those students, who are involved in Cadet Camp, will be expected to attend trials following the return from Annual Camp on Friday 18th March. This is an important hit out in preparation for our first opposed trial round against Newington College on Saturday 2nd April. WAVERLEY TO WIN! Well done to all boys and their coaches for a great season, and many thanks also to all parents for their support of their sons. A highlight of the Presentation Evening was having special guests Brother Brian murphy, and Old-Boy and Sydney Sixers player Charlie Wakim speak to the audience about their love of cricket from both sides of the fence. Charlie represented Waveley with distinction before graduating 6 years go, and has since played for the NSW 2nd XI, Sydney Sixers and is one of the leading run-scorers in the Sydney 1st Grade competition for the past few seasons. He challenged boys to work hard at all areas of their game…but to still remember that it only is a game, and enjoying time with team mates are some of his favourite times in the sport. The Brother Murphy Player of the Year countdown saw 1st Place go to Harry Whiteman from the 10As with 480 points – led by has amazing feat of 24 wickets for the season with best figures of 6/18. 2nd was Alex Ferrarra, from the 9As until an impressive 1st XI debut last week, on 438 points with 270 runs and 10 wickets. 3rd Place fell to James Mahony- Brack from the 1st XI, with 148 runs and 17 wickets in the CAS season. The evening also saw Year 12 students Max Shanahan and captain of Cricket Costa Fragias receive a Contribution and service to Cricket award for their enthusiasm, leadership and promotion of the sport. On the field in the final round, all our finishing Year 12 boys in the 1sts and 2nds had to contend with narrow defeats under 20 runs, with the chase on each occasion being too far out of reach due to a steady loss of wickets and the absence of a dominating partnership. A full 1st XI report concludes this bulletin from coach Boyd. Tyzac Jordan and James Mahony-Brack have represented Waverley and the CAS this week with distinction in the NSW Schools championships – with James bowling well despite managing a side injury; while Tyzac has impressed with both his fluent glovework as CAS wicketkeeper – batsman, and a handy 33 not out sees him in good form at the mid-way point in the week. The 7As had a narrow loss, despite Jackson Dodd’s spell of 2/3 threatening to steal the match, but the 7Bs produced a fantastic total of 8/182 batting first to set up a 40 run victory. Max Farmeary and Peter Reeves both scored 33 in great shots to all points of the ground in a strong team display. Flynn Wild in the 8As made a great all-round contribution hitting 43 and then 3/23 with the ball; while Valenzuela WAVERLEY COLLEGE A Catholic Independent School for boys in the Edmund Rice tradition NURRUNGA Volume 40 No. 7 •11 MARCH 2016 page 13 Our Lady’s Mount & Waterford From Behind the Stumps - Waverley Cricket Report 1st XI report round 10 v SAC Waverley lost the toss and was in the field but success with the ball was immediate with new opening bowler Jack Hardwicke-Owen finding an edge through to Jordan with just 1 on the board. Hardwicke-Owen struck again with a catch to Ben O’Sullivan at slip. Then with 13 on the board, a direct hit from Alex Ferrara found the runner well short of his ground. This became 4 for 24 when O’Sullivan accepted a good catch diving forward at cover off the bowling of Costa Fragias. Ryan Connolly claimed the next wicket with a catch to Tyler von der Heyden with the total on 31 and when Mac Jenkins hit the pads of the SAC CAS representative batsman to claim the lbw decision with the total on 58, a small chase looked on. However a stumping being turned down and a dropped catch let the total climb, and the final total of 133 was always going to be hard to chase on a slow wicket with a slow outfield. A good start saw 28 on the board before the 1st wicket fell and wickets then fell on 33, 55 and 76. The Waverley batsmen had allowed the SAC spinners to strangle the scoring and the next 4 wickets on 77, 79, 80 and 84 were a direct result of the pressure and the misguided belief that the spinners needed to be hit for multiple runs, when singles and two’s were on offer with plenty of balls remaining to win the game. The only bright light during this period was the solid performance of Year 9 student Alex Ferrara who, although tied down at times, showed loads of ability and concentration during his innings of 25. It was left to youngster Mac Jenkins and leaver Costa Fragias to attempt to rescue the game. They carried the score to 112 in the 46th over when Fragias gutsy effort came to an end and he was out for 17. Jenkins and Connolly ran some cheeky singles but the task was just too great and on the final ball of the 49th over in an attempt to find the boundary, Jenkins was caught at mid on giving SAC their first and only win of the season. Waverley’s 119 left them 15 runs short. Hopefully the younger members learnt some good lessons from this game that will put them in good shape for next season and the challenges ahead. My thanks to Mr James Maloney for all his work with the team in term four and to his replacement in term one Mr Greg Elliot. Thanks also to all the parents for the amazing efforts in the preparation of lunches and teas at QP this season- again we led the way and to Mr Garry Mahony-Brack for his professional running of the canteen. Finally congratulations to Tyzac Jordan and James Mahony-Brack on selection in the CAS of NSW 1st XI for NSW Schoolboys Cricket Week. As I write this report game one has been completed with a victory to the CAS team over Country schools. Both James and Tyzac contributed well to the win. It is hoped that both can continue their effort for the rest of the week.
