The first dimension, the founding process of Japanese Protestantism, is analysed in its wider historical context on the basis of contemporary scholarship, particuhirly Japanese. A second dimension: the ongoing historiographical interpretation of the founding process, is analysed from the foundation period itse1f up to 1945, against its contempo­ rary historical background. The analytical approach takes account of the forms of history writing as weil as its contents, in an overall comparative perspective applied to the Japanese and the Western material. In the çonclusion the interpretative trends whioh are identified through the analysis · of the second, historiographical dimension are related to trends in contemporary interpre­ tation of the foundation period. For the Japanese language, the Hepburn system is used for transliteration. Names of Japanese are given in order of indigenous convention: surname preceding personal name. The ambiguity of pronounciation of a Japanese personal name cannot be rendered in Latin script. In cases where no standard pronounciation is evident, I have made a choice between the acceptable options. Japanese words or booktitles are frequently translated in order to facilitate the reading of the thesis. Quotations and words from non-English, Western languages are not translated when the meaning is evident to a person who understands English. The present study has been based as far as possible on primary sources such as protocols, letters, legal documents, and articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers from the nineteenth century. A contextual-comparative approach was employed to evaluate the objectivity of a given source. Secondary sources have also been consulted for interpretation and as corroborating evidence, especially when no primary sources were available. The study concludes that the Pietist revival ignited by the Norwegian Lutheran lay preacher, Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824), represented the culmination of the sixteenth- century Reformation in Norway, and the forerunner of the Adventist movement in that country.

    Religion Education in Norway: Tension or Harmony between Human Rights and Christian Cultural Heritage? BENGT-OVE ANDREASSEN University of Tromsø Abstract Both research and public and scholarly debate on religious education (RE) in Norway have mostly revolved around the subject in primary and secondary school called Christianity, Religion and Ethics (KRL) (later renamed Religion, Philosophies of Life and Ethics, RLE), not least due to the criticisms raised by the UN’s Human Rights Com- mittee in 2004 and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in 2007 of the Norwegian model for RE in primary and secondary schools. The RE subject in upper secondary school, however, is hardly ever mentioned. The same applies to teacher education. This article therefore aims at providing some insight into how RE has developed in the Norwegian educational system overall, ranging from primary and secondary to upper secondary and including the different forms of teacher education. Keywords: religious education, teacher education, educational system, human rights, Norway Historical Background The development of religious education (RE) in Norway can be described in three main perspectives which link with historical periods: firstly, the Chris- tian education policy in the period from 1736 (when confirmation was made obligatory for all people) to 1860; secondly, the gradual secularisation of the school from 1860, as new subjects supplemented and challenged Christian- ity as the main curricular focus in schools, to 1969, when a new Education Act stated that RE should no longer should be confessionally rooted in Christianity. Nathaniel Makoto Uematsu Primate and Chairperson of the General Synod The 61st (Regular) General Synod of the Nippon Sei Ko Kai(NSKK) was held from 27th to 29th May 2014 at Ushigome Sei Ko Kai, St. Barnabas’ Church in the Tokyo Diocese. In the opening speech of the General Synod, I recollected the last two-year period of the General Synod, and took up some important points which the NSKK has confronted. I have made a review of our current activities as well as our standpoints. In the following, I am going to mention several resolutions which were considered during the present General Synod. (1) Three years and two months have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake. The NSKK’s “Let’s Walk Together!” project finished its original two-year working period last May (in August in the Kamaishi Area). This means that the original activities have been more or less completed. The present General Synod was the first one held after completion of the project, at which many relevant reports were presented and the whole results were reassessed. I must mention that during the period since the earthquake, the NSKK has “walked together” with the victims, praying, supporting or working in union with them. This is an event that deserves special mention in the history of the NSKK.

    Organizational Perspectives on Stained Glass Ceilings for Female Bishops in the Anglican Communion: A Case Study of the Church of England Judy Rois University of Toronto and the Anglican Foundation of Canada Daphne Rixon Saint Mary’s University Alex Faseruk Memorial University of Newfoundland The purpose of this study is to document how glass ceilings, known in an ecclesiastical setting as stained glass ceilings, are being encountered by female clergy within the Anglican Communion. The study applies the stained glass ceiling approach developed by Cotter et al. (2001) to examine the organizational structures and ordination practices in not only the Anglican Communion but various other Christian denominations. The study provides an in depth examination of the history of female ordination within the Church of England through the application of managerial paradigms as the focal point of this research. INTRODUCTION In the article, “Women Bishops: Enough Waiting,” from the October 19, 2012 edition of Church Times, the Most Rev. Dr. Rowan Williams, then Archbishop of Canterbury, urged the Church of England in its upcoming General Synod scheduled for November 2012 to support legislation that would allow the English Church to ordain women as bishops (Williams, 2012). Williams had been concerned about the Church of England’s inability to pass resolutions that would allow these ordinations. As the spiritual head of the Anglican Communion of approximately 77 million people worldwide, Williams had witnessed the ordination of women to the sacred offices of bishop, priest and deacon in many parts of the communion. Ordinations allowed women in the church to overcome glass ceilings in certain ministries, but also led to controversy and divisiveness in other parts of the church, although the Anglican Communion has expended significant resources in both monetary terms and opportunity costs to deal with the ordination of women to sacred offices, specifically as female bishops.

  • The Russian Orthodox Church in Taiwan
    Min-Chin Kay CHIANG LN “Reviving” the Russian Orthodox Church in Taiwan Abstract. As early as the first year into Japanese colonization (LcRd–LRQd), the Rus- sian Orthodox Church arrived in Taiwan. Japanese Orthodox Church members had actively called for establishing a church on this “new land”. In the post-WWII pe- riod after the Japanese left and with the impending Cold War, the Russian commu- nity in China migrating with the successive Kuomintang government brought their church life to Taiwan. Religious activities were practiced by both immigrants and local members until the LRcSs. In recent decades, recollection of memories was in- itiated by the “revived” Church; lobbying efforts have been made for erecting mon- uments in Taipei City as the commemorations of former gathering sites of the Church. The Church also continuously brings significant religious objects into Tai- wan to “reconnect” the land with the larger historical context and the church net- work while bonding local members through rituals and vibrant activities at the same time. With reference to the archival data of the Japanese Orthodox Church, postwar records, as well as interviews of key informants, this article intends to clarify the historical development and dynamics of forgetting and remembering the Russian Orthodox Church in Taiwan.
