Paul McNulty “You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church ...” Tomorrow (6/29/20) we celebrate the Solemnity of Peter and Paul, Apostles. These two great Saints are celebrated together by the Church because of the crucial role that they played in the spreading of the to the Jews and Gentiles in the early Church.

Saint Peter was the first and was the chief or head of the Apostles. This authority is evident in a number of different passages in the scriptures from the to the as Peter answers on behalf of the Twelve. This is seen in the gospel passage for the feast (Mt. 16:13-19—‘but who do YOU say that ?’). Tradition tells us that St. Peter gave his life for the gospel, being crucified upside-down in Rome around the year 64A.D.

Saint Paul, after encountering on the road to Damascus, became the greatest evangelist in the life of the Church. He went on to found 14 Churches (all in union with the One Church born on ) and endured all kinds of suffering and torture to spread the Gospel and make disciples of all nations. Like St. Peter, Paul would also give his life for the Faith, being beheaded near Rome in 64A.D.

As Roman Catholics we owe a great deal of gratitude to Sts. Peter and Paul. As the center of the empire at the time, they knew that if they could bring the faith there they could spread it to the ends of the earth. After centuries of empty pagan worship, Rome was fertile ground for the true Faith to grow. We are here 2,000 years later because of their witness and the conviction to follow to the ends of the earth. It’s a special feast for me, not just because I celebrate my namesake, St. Paul, but it was on this day in 2014 that I offered my first Mass as a priest of Jesus Christ. May we all benefit from their intercession and example. Saints Peter and Paul, Pray for us! Peace, Fr. Paul

For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord! The Spirit of truth will testify to me, says the Lord; and you also will testify. Alleluia, alleluia - :26b,27a
