SELF-INJURY & SUICIDE: REDUCING THE RISK GUEST: SALLY FOOTE, DVM [00:00:00] Colleen Pelar: Hi, welcome back to UNLEASHED (at work & home). My guest today is Dr. Sally Foote of Okaw Vet Clinic in Illinois, and I asked her to talk to me today a little bit about self-injuring behavior because that's a big problem and it's something that we do sometimes when we are attempting to cope with problems and it's not usually helpful. So welcome, Dr. Foote. I'm so glad you're here today. Sally Foote, DVM: Thank you. If you hear a few background noises, that's because of my veterinary practice. I holed myself off in the exam room, but you may hear voices in the hall and just to let you know. Colleen Pelar: It's all about real life here. Things happen. We typically start with animals and then we move toward people. So we do see self-injuring behavior in animals sometimes. Can you tell me a little bit about that? When does that occur? Sally Foote, DVM: Well, I think um the most common thing many veterinarians, veterinary staff, even probably, you know pet owners that have had [00:01:00] some uh, whatever little more educated or experience with pets, we can think of, say, the dog who chronically licks their front paw chronically, maybe if their paws or at a spot on the back of their foot, and this is called an acral lick granuloma. That's the technical medical term and oftentimes what gets them to start licking is some kind of like stress, some kind of anxiety trigger, and it becomes chronic and it actually is partly a compulsive behavior. -

Sánchez, Ph.D. John Howard White, Ph.D. Edited by Angélica Sánchez-Clark, Ph.D. With the assistance of Hector Contreras, David Gómez and Feliza Monta University of New Mexico Graduate Students Spanish Colonial Research Center A Partnership between the University of New Mexico and the National Park Service [Version Date: May 20, 2014] 1 Coronado National Memorial Coronado Expedition Research Topics 1) Research the lasting effects of the expedition in regard to exchanges of cultures, Native American and Spanish. Was the shaping of the American Southwest a direct result of the Coronado Expedition's meetings with natives? The answer to this question is embedded throughout the other topics. However, by 1575, the Spanish Crown declared that the conquest was over and the new policy of pacification would be in force. Still, the next phase that would shape the American Southwest involved settlement, missionization, and expansion for valuable resources such as iron, tin, copper, tar, salt, lumber, etc. Francisco Vázquez de Coronado’s expedition did set the Native American wariness toward the Spanish occupation of areas close to them. Rebellions were the corrective to their displeasure over colonial injustices and institutions as well as the mission system that threatened their beliefs and spiritualism. In the end, a kind of syncretism and symbiosis resulted. Today, given that the Spanish colonial system recognized that the Pueblos and mission Indians had a legal status, land grants issued during that period protects their lands against the new settlement pattern that followed: that of the Anglo-American. -

As vice chairman of Royal Caribbean, he wants the cruise ship line’s most elite passengers to have a superior experience—but at the same time, he needs to make sure ordinary guests don’t feel like second-class travelers when they come aboard his ships. It’s a job that’s gotten harder in recent years as Royal Caribbean has broadened its offer- ings to attract more deep-pocketed cruisers. Like many consumer-facing businesses, Royal Caribbean has gone after the one percent because that’s where the growth is. The result is what I call the Velvet Rope Economy. On Royal Caribbean cruises, a virtual velvet rope divides passengers who dine at the Windjammer Café, which is open to everyone, from an elite oasis next door called Coastal Kitchen. There are no crowds at Coastal Kitchen and the calm atmosphere inside is a world away from the hectic scene at Windjammer. When jealous refugees from Windjammer work up the courage to open the frosted glass doors and inquire about a table, they are politely—but firmly—informed that Coastal Kitchen is only open to guests in the ship’s Royal Suite Class or members of Pinnacle, Royal Caribbean’s version of elite frequent-flier status on the airlines. The split between Windjammer and Coastal Kitchen is a metaphor for contemporary consumer life. Whatever the arena—health care, education, work, travel and leisure—on the right side of the rope is a friction-free existence where, for a price, needs are antici- pated and catered to. -

Activity Time: 20–30 minutes Materials: • CD player • Music from other cultures • Dance instructions Directions: Set Up: • Review your curriculum and research the music, instruments and dance of a culture the class is studying. Locate a CD with music from that culture. To research dance information, log on to the teacher section of the American Folklore Center on the Library of Congress Web site at www.loc.gov or check the Web sites listed in the library of the Folk Dance Association’s site at www.folkdancing.org. Day of the Activity: • Begin a class discussion by asking students what kind of music they listen to, what kind of instruments are used in this music and why they like that particular kind of music. • Have students demonstrate how they move to the music they listen to. • Play a CD with music from the culture you are studying, and ask students what group of people this music represents and what kind of instruments they hear. • Demonstrate traditional dance steps to the music. • Have students join in the dance, performing the traditional dance steps and creating their own. Note: Could be team-taught with physical education teacher. 39 Introduction: Amelia Jones Harmony Bench n her 1997 essay “‘Presence’ in Absentia: Experiencing Performance as Documentation,” arts scholar Amelia Jones offers a précis of her 1998 monograph Body Art: Performing Ithe Subject, while orienting the discussion toward the problematics of analyzing live art exclusively through its documentation. Listing her age when Yoko Ono, Vito Acconci, Valie Export, and others were performing key works, Jones reflects on the impracticability of her presence at these events—she was 10, or 12, or 15, etc. Her absence does not deter her, however, from critically analyzing work she did not witness. She notes, “I approach body artworks through their photographic, textual, oral, video, and/or film traces. I would like to argue, however, that the problems raised by my absence (my not having been there) are largely logistical rather than ethical or hermeneutic. That is, while the experience of viewing a photograph and reading a text is clearly different from that of sitting in a small room watching an artist perform, neither has a privileged relationship to the historical ‘truth’ of the performance . .”1 Aside from dance documentaries and documentations that fill dance history professors’ shelves, screendance has not generally been concerned with the truth-bearing mark of authenticity that Jones describes. As a discipline, however, dance is haunted by that rhetoric. Like live art, body art, and/or performance art, dance as a scholarly and practical discourse clings to the ‘live’ dancing body against the onslaught of media—even when choreographers integrate video or projected media elements into their stage-based performances. -
