President’s Message

The FIVB has always appreciated the importance of the media in promoting our sport so that a growing part of the people may enjoy the quality of our game and the qualities of our athletes. The role of the media is also vital to us since it attracts more and more people to Volleyball at any level from kids and parents through Park Volley to the elite for top Volleyball and Beach Volleyball competitions. For many years, we have made a lot of effort to reach the highest spot that Volleyball deserves. It is now one of the most played games in the world and the number one as far as affiliated countries and territories are concerned since, as of today, 218 National Federations are duly registered with us. We are working around the clock building the bridges we need to enter the world of global communications and to act as a media friendly sport. That is why the FIVB is very happy to warmly welcome the media and journalists everywhere in the world. They are modern day historians. They report sports odysseys and project vivid images of sports heroes. This media guide is a result of the efforts the FIVB has taken compiling team analysis, player data and useful facts and figures to provide a solid base to satisfy the most experienced Volleyball news people as well as newcomers who will expe- rience the taste of our sport on this very special occasion. A special occasion indeed since Volleyball will celebrate in Athens the 40th anniversary of its presence in the Olympics in both genders. It also made history since our sport was the first women’s team sport to enter the Olympic program in the 1964 Tokyo Games. And now since 1996 in Atlanta, we have Beach Volleyball as a second discipline which is a fast growing and very popular sport. We hope journalists and TV Network operators at the 2004 Olympic Games will find the guidebook suitable to their duties. We wish them the most pleasant and joyful stay in Athens covering both the Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Olympic Tournaments.

Get Involved, Keep the ball flying !

Dr. Rubén Acosta Hernandez FIVB President
