What are their views on ethics or the role of the journalist in society? Why do some journalist stu- dents quit their education and some thrive? Why, indeed, do young people want to be journalists – and is this changing? Are “our” students different from other students? How should changes in the media markets and technology affect the way we teach journalism? Rapidly changing circumstances in a profession, as in society, induce an element of what sociologist Émile Durkheim (borrowing the concept from Jean-Marie Guyau) called anomia – a condition where social and/or moral norms are confused and unclear. Being a teacher for a profession in such conditions means that one often becomes an amateur ethnographer, wondering daily about the customs, mentality and lifestyles of the students, the colleagues and the professionals one encounters in the flesh and through journalistic work. If such thoughts in our busy daily lives are usually concerned with individuals and practical solutions (Why is this so hard to learn for him? Why does she want to quit journalism school? Did he really mean what he just said?), it is not strange that this daily reflection has resulted in many academic projects concerned with the professional socialisation of journalists. This book is strongly rooted in the Nordic Conferences for Journalism Teachers. The first versions of most contributions in this volume were presented at Making Journalists through Journalism Education: Nordic Perspectives, a pre-conference for the teacher conference in Reykjavik in autumn of 2014. It seems only fitting that this initiative came from what has been known as the Hofdabrekka group, a network of Nordic journalism teachers who, since a previous teacher’s conference in 2004 that also took place in Iceland, started work on a series of surveys of Nordic journalism students, which by 2012 had become the largest survey of this kind in the world, answered by almost five thousand students at thirty institutions of journalism learn- ing. While working on early plans for an anthology from this survey project, we were struck by two facts. The first was that the research tradition on journalism education in the Nordic countries is remarkable, and is also so by international standards. Not 7 PREFACE only is the number of researchers and projects very high, but also the variety, and very often the quality, of this work is high as well. The second fact was that this tradition is hardly known outside the Nordic countries. For these reasons, we found it much more fitting to make a broad Nordic anthology on current research regarding journalism education, which made it possible to unite in one volume a multiplicity of different and complementary works, illuminating many aspects and challenges of modern journalism education in both the Nordic countries and elsewhere. For the realisation of this book, we want to express our gratitude to the people of Nordicom and the many institutions that have given financial support for the book’s production: the Nordic Network for Journalism Education, Tre Smeder, the Finnish- Norwegian Cultural Foundation, Södertörn University, the Bergen University Funds, and the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen.     Central Asia’s New School of Analytic Journalism Ten-day course equips young journalists with specialist tools. IWPR has launched its comprehensive training course to develop analytic journalism among a new generation of journalists in Central Asia. Young writers from across the region spent ten days in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek learning investigative techniques and analytical skills, as well as data visualisation and story design. The stories the 28 participants produce will be published in the media outlets they currently work for and also on IWPR’s analytical portal cabar.asia. This School of Analytic Journalism is the first stage of IWPR’s three-year project to train a fresh wave of journalists and experts. The project is funded by the Foreign Ministry of Norway, with the OSCE Academy in Bishkek as partner. Central Asia’s New School of Analytic Journalism (See IWPR Launches New Central Asia Programme). “We have become a big Central Asian family over these ten days. Every journalist has contributed something special to the school,” Bishkek-based journalist Bermet Ulanova said. “Now I know where to seek information, who to cooperate with for a joint story and who to talk to in general.     Funding Systems and Their Effects on Higher Education Systems NATIONAL STUDY – NORWAY November 2006 Nicoline Frølich NIFU STEP – Studies in Innovation, Research and Education Funding Systems and their Effects on Higher Education Systems – Norway Executive Summary In 2002 Norway introduced a new performance-based funding model for higher education in response to growth in the number of students and costs of higher education. The model aims to improve education as measured by the credits and graduates produced, increase research as measured by research publications, and enhance external relevance as measured by external funding. The model is still being developed. Formal explicit links between the fund- ing system and national higher education policies have been established as a result of a re- cent reform in Norwegian higher education (the Quality Reform). The various stakeholders have identified several intended and unintended effects of the funding system on higher education and on the core tasks of teaching and research. Accord- ing to the Ministry of Education and Research, the performance-based funding system will improve the quality of research and higher education, as these are best safeguarded by means of a funding system that emphasises results. The Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions (the Rectors’ Conference) has identified several elements in the financing system that contribute to the development of HEIs. Incentives are viewed as a means of encouraging institutions to increase the quality of their educational programmes and research and to implement more structural changes. However, the Rectors’ Conference acknowledges that a funding model with financial rewards could produce unintended effects and advocates monitoring the consequences.

Thirteen research units were included in the evaluation, comprising five university departments, two departments at university colleges and six institutes for applied research. Altogether, 177 researchers at these units were involved in the evaluation process.     ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: BATTLE OF THE BRAINS: ELECTION-NIGHT FORECASTING AT THE DAWN OF THE COMPUTER AGE Ira Chinoy, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Emeritus Maurine Beasley Philip Merrill College of Journalism This dissertation examines journalists’ early encounters with computers as tools for news reporting, focusing on election-night forecasting in 1952. Although election night 1952 is frequently mentioned in histories of computing and journalism as a quirky but seminal episode, it has received little scholarly attention. This dissertation asks how and why election night and the nascent field of television news became points of entry for computers in news reporting. The dissertation argues that although computers were employed as pathbreaking “electronic brains” on election night 1952, they were used in ways consistent with a long tradition of election-night reporting. As central events in American culture, election nights had long served to showcase both news reporting and new technology, whether with 19th-century devices for displaying returns to waiting crowds or with 20th-century experiments in delivering news by radio. In 1952, key players – television news broadcasters, computer manufacturers, and critics – showed varied reactions to employing computers for election coverage. But this computer use in 1952 did not represent wholesale change. While live use of the new technology was a risk taken by broadcasters and computer makers in a quest for attention, the underlying methodology of forecasting from early returns did not represent a sharp break with pre-computer approaches. And while computers were touted in advance as key features of election-night broadcasts, the “electronic brains” did not replace “human brains” as primary sources of analysis on election night in 1952.
