Book of Abstracts incorporating the Seventeenth International Conference on the Literature of Region and Nation 25–26 October 2018 Jagiellonian University in Kraków Conference organisers: Jagiellonian University in Kraków, University of Warsaw, Region and Nation Literature Association Esterino Adami University of Turin Esterino Adami is Associate Professor of English at the University of Turin, Italy. His main research areas include cognitive poetics, narratology, sociolinguistics and postcolonial discourse. He has written extensively on the notion of identity in literary and non-literary texts, the implications of ELT in postcolonial settings and the fictional rendition of specialised registers. He is the author of Railway Discourse. Linguistic and Stylistic Representations of the Train in Anglophone Countries (2018). Before and After Shining India: Deconstructing Language and Ideology in News Discourse This paper intends to discuss the notion of aftermath by considering the critical response offered by journalist and novelist Chetan Bhagat to the image of ‘Shining India’ seen as a turning point for social, economic and cultural improvement and development in the South Asian context. If the metaphor of Shining India appears to suggest a vertiginous change that enhances the lives of millions of people across India, in reality it offers a very partial and ideological picture of reality by hiding or marginalising sensitive topics such as religious or multilingual diversity, patriarchy or minorities exploitation. Here my aim is to observe how the sense of ‘before and after’ a certain historical threshold is textually and linguistically represented in non-fictional discourse, with reference to issues such as access to education, gender equality, minority communities and others. -

TRADITION AND THE LITERARY CANON We need to know the writing of the past, and know it differently than we have ever CARL TIGHE known it; not to pass on a tradition but to break its hold over us. Adrienne Rich, On Lies, Secrets and Silence: Selected Prose 1966-78 This article explores the relationship between contemporary writers, the literary canon and the idea of belonging to a national literary tradition, and it invites you to consider these things in relation to your own writing. I am concerned here with what is often called the Literary Canon. One definition of the canon is a collection of books and documents (literature, poetry, epics, history, biography) somehow accepted as normative, as ‘the representative literature’ of a particular community: that is, the most important books in the life of that community. The community referred to may be a national community or linguistic, a speech community. But that is not the end of it. Another definition of the Literary Canon is: ‘an authoritative list of books compiled by university scholars in the 1930s and 1940s, which all educated people should respect and admire’.1 Our word canon came from the Greek word kanon, meaning a rod or reed, and by extension a rule or measuring stick. Here are some modern definitions of the idea: A Church law; an ecclesiastical law or code of laws established by a church council A general secular law, rule or code of law governing the treatment of subjects Criterion, the basis for judgement, standard The list of books of the Bible officially recognised and accepted by the Church With a capital C. -

This investigation focuses mainly on his network and career strategies and is based on various sources from a number of European archives and libraries, mainly those situated in Italy, Poland and Germany. The study presents the family De Gratta and the familial social actions that Francesco used in order to root his children and family in the Polish- Lithuanian noble culture. Next, the analysis shows that the career of Fran- cesco De Gratta was inextricably correlated with the establishment of the early modern royal postal system in Gdańsk (the city of Gdańsk fulfilled an important bridging role within the Poland-Lithuanian Commonwealth) as well as his close contacts with different Polish kings and queens. -

Abstract This study considers the role that touring Shakespeare productions played in securing British interests during the Cold War and decolonisation. Focusing on a selection of British Council supported tours during the period the relationship between Shakespeare in Britain and Shakespeare abroad is examined. The evolution of touring Shakespeare’s use in cultural diplomacy is located within the broader history of Britain’s imperial decline and Cold War entanglements. The thesis draws upon the National Archive’s Records of the British Council; the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s collections; and the British Library’s Newspaper, and Manuscript collections. -

This important period, is, in fact, underrsearched in existing scholarship. On the basis of a wide-range of previously unstudied archival sources, the thesis provides new evidence to demonstrate that the relationship between the regime and literary circles was, at least to some extent, symbiotic and, at times, mutually accommodating. -
