HISTORICAL NOTE: Camp Laguna opened in 1942 as a training facility for Gen. George Patton’s armored tank units. During this time the Yuma Test Branch began testing floating military bridges along the Colorado River. After WWII, the Yuma Test Branch became the Yuma Test Station which eventually became Yuma Proving Ground.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: Nearly 300 oral histories were recorded and transcribed from 1994 to 1998 as part of a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Legacy Resource Management Program. The initial goal of the program was to promote historical research on lands held by the DOD. Because access to certain areas is restricted for safety reasons, collecting oral histories greatly expanded the opportunities for the general public to learn more about military history - particularly the history of this Yuma military installation which continues to perform a wide number of functions and serves and supports many experimental projects.

Although much is known about the Yuma Test Branch and Yuma Test Station, the AHS-Rio Colorado Division was charged with documenting the entire history of the posts up until YPG took over. Towards this end, Carol Brooks advertised widely nationwide to recruit former employees and members of the military who served during that time. They responded from all over the country. Some also sent in photos and copies of military documents which are noted on their respective folders. Carol also sent out a call for volunteer typists and researchers for the project.

The interviews are well organized and transcribed to a high standard. All but a few folders contain an original and a copy of the transcripts which are of excellent quality. The bulk of the tapes are originals with a number of tape copies scattered throughout. Collection highlights include stories about how personnel arrived in Yuma, what equipment was tested, the problems and ingenuity encountered in the field, and unusual incidents such as Eight Ball, the mascot burro. A number of women also testified as wives or staff members. Copies of the tapes and
