BREVARD BUSINESS NEWS / 6 Call Adrienne Roth at 321-951-7777 for Advertising Information JANUARY 10, 2011 BBN DIGEST Brevard Art Museum in Melbourne to host Highwaymen artists Jan. 15 The Brevard Art Museum will host Highwaymen artists from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15. The museum is in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne. R.L. Lewis, Roy McLendon, Isaac Knight, Willie Reagan, Carnell Smith and Curtis Arnett, six of the original artists known as the Highwaymen, will be on hand to give demonstrations, appraisals, and autographs. They will also have items available for purchase. This family oriented event will offer visitors the unique Job Link opportunity to meet the men who made history. Starting in the late1950s–segregated South, a number of artists taught themselves to paint idyllic Florida vistas as an alternative to working under harsh conditions in new ad emailed packinghouses and citrus groves. They sold their art out of their cars to businesses, doctors’ offices, and motels along the roadside (often in Brevard County). Focusing on scenes of undeveloped FULL COLOR Florida — rolling waves, swaying palm trees, great expanses of clouds reflected in marshes and rivers — these artists captured a mythical view of the Sunshine State landscape “shimmering under saturated sunsets and magical moonlight.” For the next three decades, these uncelebrated and loosely affiliated artists sold their paintings for not a lot of money, but as “much as a typical day’s wage.” Then in the mid–1990s, attention to, and the value of their works shot up in part because a collector coined the evocative name “The Highwaymen” to draw renewed attention to their art and lives. The Highwaymen exhibition, currently on view at the Brevard Art Museum (culled from area collectors and from Sarasota collector Larry Helmuth) brings together paintings from all 26 Highwaymen artists.
