Callum McDonald, 8 year old son of Jock McDonald and Alison Bleyler McDonald was the Class of ‘87 Flag Bearer this year. Because we received the “Class of the Year” award after our 25th Reunion, we were at the front of the Dartmouth Night Parade! In addition to the McDonald family, the Great Class of ‘87 was represented by Tracey Salmon-Smith, Martha Ehrmann, Jeff Mead, and Mark Putter and family. Also spotted over the weekend were Holly Taylor and Tom Palisi. Great showing 87’s! Homecoming 2014 will be Oct 17 - 19, 2014.

Ginny Wise was in Ha- nover for a meeting of the Fund Board, Betsy Rutherford was there for work and to see her daughter and they joined up with four of the six ‘87s in town for the council meeting: Anne Schnader, Conrad Smith, Jenn Tisdel Schorsch and Christen Fitzpatrick O’Connor. Brendan Connell and Meg Crone Ramsden didn’t make the post Alumni Council dinner gathering at the Canoe Club. Probably smart, as the other six of us where there long past final call.

enn, Ginny and Betsy even managed to sneak in a Jreturn to the Canoe Club for lunch the following day and a long talk about life, careers and family. They agreed that the bonds formed during our time on the Hanover plain can be so easily re-formed and renewed. The Great Class of 1987 - February 2014 DPCS 2013 Post-Grads

A big THANK YOU to all those who paid your Class Dues and included a donation to our Class Project. Our class gave $7,100 to DPCS last year, which represents 10% of all the funds con- tributed by the 16 DPCS supporting classes. Thanks especially to those ‘87s who served as mentors: Pam Haering, Timothy Schmidt, Thomas Rossant, Lisa Horowitz, Meg Frazier, Ali- cia Altman Southwell, Dave Roccaforte, Jessica Benjamin and Ricki Stern.

Please continue to support our Class Project — Dartmouth Partners in Community Service — through our class dues check off. We need your participation!

• It costs DPCS an average of $3,000 to support a Dartmouth undergrad who wants to work in a community ser- vice non-profit internship during an off term. Generally DPCS places 35-40 interns per year. It varies greatly by term (this past summer we had 22; this fall we have 2!) • The Class of ‘87 is one of 16 classes to officially support DPCS. • Matching an undergrad with an alumni mentor is a BIG part of the DPCS mission and program. If you are inter- ested in mentoring for a 10-week term, please contact us and we will get you involved!

The DPCS Post-Graduate Program is in its 4th year in NYC. These are one-year post fellowships for recent graduates. We currently have 8 members of the class of 2013 (all women!) working in in community service organizations ranging from Big Brothers/Big Sisters to Children’s Aid Society to The Manhattan D.A.’s Office. David Roccaforte is a mentor to Gabby Mezochow ‘13 at Montefiore Hospital and Jessica Benjamin is a mentor for Kate Kranenburg ‘13 at Harlem Chidlren’s Zone. We are looking to expand our “PG” program to Boston so please let us know if you’d like to know more or can get involved. Contact Jessica at [email protected].

In a BET opinion piece published on 12/6/13, Keith Boykin, a CNBC contributor who has appeared on numerous broadcast shows, describes the positive impact visionary, activist, philanthropist, and former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela had on his life. He recalls the first time he ever felt connected to Mandela while he was at the College. “I first learned about him when I was a young reporter covering campus protests for divestment during the anti-apartheid movement at Dartmouth College in the 1980s. I remember danc- ing to the song ‘Free Nelson Mandela’ at frat parties on campus. The fight against apartheid Tim Hartigan and Ben Moynihan at the Club and Group Officers’ Weekend at Dartmouth, was the defining social justice issue of our college careers,” he writes.

US Biathlon President and CEO Max Cobb is currently at the Sochi Olympic Games serving as the Technical Delegate for the biathlon events. “I am very pleased with the progress the athletes on the team have made. It’s the result of their focused training with some of the world’s best coaches and high performance staff,” said Cobb. With four athletes who have had top-six World Cup finishes this is the strongest and deepest team we have ever sent to the Games. All of them will be working together with the great team of coaches and ski technicians to try and win America’s first ever Olympic biathlon medal.”
