Ngorongoro is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world, but also famous for the grasslands and lakes of the crater floor, where we may find the endangered Black Rhinoceros. The main tour ends in the Serengeti. A vast unspoiled, rolling savannah and woodlands, which hosts the most spectacular concentration of animals during migration and calving. In view of this, conservation of these ecosystems has been threatened by overuse and pressure of exotic monocultures. Sustainable forest development aims at utilizing the forest resource without unduly degrading the forest ecosystems. This study examines the case of Mount Meru forest reserve, a tropical montane rainforest in northern Tanzania. The main aim of the study is to investigate human induced causes of forest degradation and to propose ways to improve the forest management so as to attain sustainable forest development. The study is based on survey data obtained from the study area through semi-structured interviews conducted with 198 key informats.

Mountains and urbanization in East Africa Bernard CHARLERY de la MASSELIÈRE, François BART, Sylvain RACAUD, Alain BONNASSIEUX and Catherine BARON. In East Africa, fertility – climatic, agronomic, demographic – first defines the mountains’ identity. This fertility has been acquired, built and maintained, while being part of a system of constraints which is specific to the mountainous environment. The concentration of people in these mountainous regions has often been related to logics of identity withdrawal, irredentism or territorial enclosure. Nevertheless, these mountains (e.g. Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, etc.) are far from “closed-into-themselves” areas; they have been placed at the heart of space that is integrated and open to world dynamics.

The fixed belt transect plot was used to survey bird species during the wet season. Fifty-eight bird species among 29 Families from 11 Orders were recorded. Passeriformes was the dominant Order for both glade types. The Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index was highest for man-made glades, as compared to that of natural glades (H’=3.677 and H’= 3.1, respectively). Student’s t-test analysis of the means of bird diversity in forest transects and corresponding forest-invaded glade transects showed that there was no significant difference in bird species diversity between the two glade types (t = -3.4208, p = 0.07186). Man- made glades had a higher species richness than natural glades (Margalef’s Richness Index R1=8.93 and R1=6.219, respectively) and this variation was statistically significant (Chi-square: χ2 = 4.5696, P = 0.033).

The highlights were hiking up really, really big mountains –bigger than Mount Rainier – that rise over ten thousand feet from their base; rockclimbing on Mount Kenya; seeing wildlife on the way; and very friendly people and support staff. Tanzania: Mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro and Arusha National Park These are close to Kilimanjaro International Airport. The two main towns are Arusha and Moshe. We stayed at Momella Wildlife Lodge (the filming location for the 1962 film “Hatari”) which was really nice but is an hour out of Arusha, adding to travel times. We did a one-day safari to the Momella Lakes. Other safaris out of Arusha are to Tarangire National Park, Manyara Park and Ngoronogoro (Peter did the first two of these). Mount Meru is a four day round trip where there is only one route and one must stay in huts which are well maintained. Mount Kilimanjaro is recommended as a six day round trip, with accommodation in tents unless you take the Marangu Route. We did it in five days as we already had some acclimatization from Mount Meru.

This gem of a “mountain park” is by and large, overlooked by the vast majority of tourists. Arusha National Park has terrain ranging from open savannah through acacia scrublands to Afro-montane cloud and rain forest, and Afro-alpine vegetation similar to Mount Kilimanjaro. There are several alkaline lakes and the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater is not to be missed. Mammal species include elephant, buffalo, various primates, giraffe and leopard. This is one park where you can see the colobus monkey. Hiking is allowed if accompanied by an armed guard, and the climb up Mount Meru is superb, often giving the best views available of Mount Kilimanjaro. At 4,556m, Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa. Due to low density of visitors the chances of seeing forest animals and especially primates like black and white colobus monkeys are far better than on Kilimanjaro.
