The Logic of Violence in Civil War Has Much Less to Do with Collective Emotions, Ideologies, Cultures, Or “Greed and Grievance” Than Currently Believed
P1: KAE 0521854091pre CUNY324B/Kalyvas 0 521 85409 1 March 27, 2006 20:2 This page intentionally left blank ii P1: KAE 0521854091pre CUNY324B/Kalyvas 0 521 85409 1 March 27, 2006 20:2 TheLogic of Violence in Civil War By analytically decoupling war and violence, this book explores the causes and dynamics of violence in civil war. Against prevailing views that such violence is either the product of impenetrable madness or a simple way to achieve strategic objectives, the book demonstrates that the logic of violence in civil war has much less to do with collective emotions, ideologies, cultures, or “greed and grievance” than currently believed. Stathis Kalyvas distinguishes between indis- criminate and selective violence and specifies a novel theory of selective violence: it is jointly produced by political actors seeking information and indi- vidual noncombatants trying to avoid the worst but also grabbing what oppor- tunities their predicament affords them. Violence is not a simple reflection of the optimal strategy of its users; its profoundly interactive character defeats sim- ple maximization logics while producing surprising outcomes, such as relative nonviolence in the “frontlines” of civil war. Civil war offers irresistible opportu- nities to those who are not naturally bloodthirsty and abhor direct involvement in violence. The manipulation of political organizations by local actors wishing to harm their rivals signals a process of privatization of political violence rather than the more commonly thought politicization of private life. Seen from this perspective, violence is a process taking place because of human aversion rather than a predisposition toward homicidal violence, which helps explain the para- dox of the explosion of violence in social contexts characterized by high levels of interpersonal contact, exchange, and even trust. -

Rule by the Few in the Federalist Papers: an Examination of the Aristocratic Preference of Publius
Br. J. Am. Leg. Studies 10(2) (2021), DOI: 10.2478/bjals-2020-0020 Rule by the Few in the Federalist Papers: An Examination of the Aristocratic Preference of Publius Carl M. Felice IV.* ABSTRACT The Federalist Papers are a set of eighty-five essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay during the founding era of the United States, with the purpose of persuading the states to adopt the Constitution as the replacement for the Articles of Confederation. The Papers were some of the most impressive political writings of the time, and are still cited frequently today by the United States Supreme Court. The arguments set forth in the Papers attempted to defend the Constitution’s aristocratic characteristics against its opponents, the Anti-Federalists, while also attempting to normalize an anti-democratic, representative form of government in the minds of the American people. The clever advocacy and skillful rhetoric employed by Hamilton, Madison, and Jay led to the eventual ratification of the Constitution, and consequently the creation of the most powerful and prosperous nation on the planet. This paper examines the differences between the traditional forms of government, the political philosophies of the Papers’ authors, the anti-democratic, aristocratic nature of the government proposed by the Constitution, and the arguments for and against its adoption, as articulated in the Papers and various other writings. Political Corruption and Intellectual Activism in Henrik Ibsen's an Enemy of the People
Key Words: politics, corruption, opportunism, manipulation and intellectual activism. 1. Introduction Politics as the science of government is critically fundamental to all human societies. However, it important to know that there are both good and bad politics. Bad politics is concerned with politics based on individual welfare whereas good politics aims at boosting the public life standards. Good politics leads to good governance and the advantages entitled to it are not to be overlooked. -
Hdounderstandingbalancing Seminar
Dr. E.M. Richmond-Garza Parlin 119, 512-232-5708 [email protected] Understanding and Balancing Motivations Focus: Ethics and Leadership 16 September 2016 Overview: Literature, especially performance, provides concrete and practical cases that help us to understand how ethical decisions are made and to see how ethics and leadership intersect. This professional seminar will use performance texts and approaches to question the nature of the ethical challenges we face in today’s diverse and dynamic workplace. We will focus on competing motivations, using methods and cases studies with practical applications. We will investigate examples, both artistic and actual, presented in a multimedia environment. These cases allow us to recognize and understand varied and competing identities and motivations. We will explore how to achieve balance so as to ensure successful management in the modern workplace. We will develop strategies for asking ourselves productive questions which lead to positive outcomes for conflicted situations in which competing ethical and personal agendas might otherwise lead to negative, or even tragic, consequences. The goal is to develop attentiveness to those patterns of motivational conflict, which might jeopardize the health and productivity of the organization and/or community in question, and to experiment with approaches for managing them. Hands-on experience with analyzing fictional conflicts will allows us to develop our own strategies for responding to real-life tensions and pressures in a self-aware and constructive manner. Exercises will involve applying Stanislavski’s system and developing ways of defining and negotiating competing motivations and ethics, while remaining aware of the subject position of each of us in the process. -

False Authenticity in the Films of Woody Allen
False Authenticity in the Films of Woody Allen by Nicholas Vick November, 2012 Director of Thesis: Amanda Klein Major Department: English Woody Allen is an auteur who is deeply concerned with the visual presentation of his cityscapes. However, each city that Allen films is presented in such a glamorous light that the depiction of the cities is falsely authentic. That is, Allen's cityscapes are actually unrealistic recreations based on his nostalgia or stilted view of the city's culture. Allen's treatment of each city is similar to each other in that he strives to create a cinematic postcard for the viewer. However, differing themes and characteristics emerge to define Allen's optimistic visual approach. Allen's hometown of Manhattan is a place where artists, intellectuals, and writers can thrive. Paris denotes a sense of nostalgia and questions the power behind it. Allen's London is primarily concerned with class and the social imperative. Finally, Barcelona is a haven for physicality, bravado, and sex but also uncertainty for American travelers. Despite being in these picturesque and dynamic locations, happiness is rarely achieved for Allen's characters. So, regardless of Allen's dreamy and romanticized visual treatment of cityscapes and culture, Allen is a director who operates in a continuous state of contradiction because of the emotional unrest his characters suffer.
