  • Cobbling Together the Dream Indian Eleven
COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

  • Times of India Bishen Bedi, India V Australia, Thir
Little Acorns “Bedi had placed his country firmly on the victory path”: Times of India Bishen Bedi, India v Australia, Third Test, Delhi, December 1969 When Sam Loxton was appointed manager for the Australian tour of India of 1959-60, Lindsay Hassett in an after-dinner speech joked: “I advise [Prime Minister] Mr Menzies to have Army and Navy standing by. A week after Sam gets to India war is bound to break out.” In fact that tour was a success, as K.N. Prabhu recalled for the Times of India ten years later after the 1969-70 series: “At a valedictory function to mark the end of the 1959-60 Australian tour of India, Richie Benaud removed his tie and blazer and presented them to his opposite number, G S Ramchand. It was a typical Benaud gesture, theatrical but sincere in its effect, as it conveyed his feelings that he had enjoyed the series. How different it was towards the end of 1969! No such courtesies were exchanged when the Madras Test ended two days before schedule. Lawry and his men packed their bags and left without much fanfare in batches to spend the New Year in Bombay en-route to South Africa.” The 1969-70 tour was wracked by disturbances and tensions, affecting both sides. Rioting broke out during the First Test at Bombay when Srinivas Venkataraghavan was given out. Hessian borders were set on fire and smoke drifted across the ground but Bill Lawry insisted play should continue. Johnny Gleeson was knocked to his knees by a bottle which struck him behind the ear as the Australians were escorted off the pitch when play ended, and Lawry was hit by a wicker-chair thrown from the pavilion balcony1.

  • Cricket Memorabilia Society Postal Auction Friday 9
CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION FRIDAY 9th JULY 2021 Lot 345 1 CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 9th JULY 2021 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down.

  • On the Twentieth to the Twenty-Fourth of June in 1974, Dennis ('Sacker') Leslie Amiss Scored the One Hundredth and First
On the twentieth to the twenty-fourth of June in 1974, Dennis (‘Sacker’) Leslie Amiss scored the one hundredth and first century at the home of cricket, Lords Cricket Ground. The match against India was the second of three tests that year, followed by two one-day international matches and five tour matches against English counties; (Surrey County Cricket Club, Derby County Cricket Club, Oxford County Cricket Club, Gloucester County Cricket Club and Nottingham County Cricket Club). Who was Dennis Amiss? Dennis Leslie Amiss (MBE) was born on 7 April 1943 in Harborne, Birmingham. In his teenage years, he suffered a serious back injury whilst playing football, which forced him to start every day of his sporting career stretching before he trained or played a sporting activity. This didn’t stop him though as he became one of the more preeminent openers in world cricket. The whole experience started in July 1960 when Amiss made his first-class debut for Warwickshire against Surrey and his England test debut against the West Indian International Cricket Team in 1966. However, in August 1972, he made his One Day International debut against the Australian Dennis Amiss playing for Warwickshire International Cricket Team. Notably, Dennis Amiss was the first cricketer to support and regularly use the now compulsory piece of kit, the helmet. At his peak, he played as a right-handed opener, but sometimes played down the order, that loved to play shots, especially drives, through the covers and through the midwicket region. A truly spectacular man to watch, Amiss averaged 42.86 runs in first-class games, 25.06 in List-A, 46.3 in Tests and 47.72 in One Day Internationals.
