Fazel, Arizona State University [email protected] Darlena Ciraulo, University of Central Missouri Shakespeare’s Bust as Speculative Object in the 1966 Batman The 1960s live-action television series Batman introduced a new incarnation of the Caped Crusader that drew on the global prestige of Shakespeare. Created by William Dozier, Batman aired for three seasons from January 1966 to March 1968 on the American ABC network where it occupied a coveted primetime slot. Anticipating the wide-appeal of the thirty-minute show, Batman’s producers ran weekly episodes on two consecutive nights; this crowd-pleasing, cliffhanger format was eventually scaled back, however, in the final year of production. Many eager TV goers who first tuned into the program--especially those diehard fans who expected to see their favorite comic book superhero triumph over Gotham City’s villains--expressed surprise, if not disdain, to encounter instead what has been called a “campy” batman. This newfangled batman (played by Adam West) possessed a perversely sophisticated appeal: he danced chicly to the “batusi”; drove a sleek Lincoln Futura “batmobile”; and utilized a broad assortment of state- of-the-art “bat” devices and gadgets in the cavalier fashion of James Bond. Batman’s bat paraphernalia and charm helped to fashion the Dark Knight, as well as his sidekick Robin (played by Burt Ward), into amusing avatars of crime-fighting. One outlandish set prop, Shakespeare’s bust, appeared regularly on the series and became specifically associated with Batman’s millionaire alter-ego, Bruce Wayne.

All items on the list can be obtained and performed legally. It may involve smooth talking, or it may involve something else, but it is all possible. The Judges take no responsibility over your getting thrown into the clink, be it local clink, state clink, federal clink, or Colonel Klink. If you end up there, it is your fault. 2. Fair Play. Sabotage is bad. We don't like it and we don't want it in the Hunt. Sabotaging teams or their items can lead to immediate disqualiﬁcation, and even then we may turn the hounds up in Admin loose on you. 3. Contact with Judges. While we don't want to complain and say that Judges have it so tough, Scav Hunt is always teetering on the edge of sheer chaos, and if we can avoid it, we should. As a result, please only communicate with the Judges if you are going to do it in a professional manner. Generally, just remember that the more people shout, the less will be understood. That seems like it makes sense, no? 4. Props. All props must continue to be mad props. 5. Points. Point totals are ﬁnal. We Judges give out points for the spirit of the item in its presentation. In some places, bonus points are also awarded for going above and beyond the Judges' concept of the Call of Duty.

Beginning with the influence of dime and pulp novels of the 1930s upon the formation of such iconic superheroes as Batman and Superman, the importance of superheroes will be given treatment in terms of a variety of media, as well as from the perspective of a variety of viewpoints, to more fully understand our relation to these figures as they represent a continuing phenomenon. Films, such as The Dark Knight and Man of Steel will be integral to answering such questions as what makes someone a hero, and what makes that hero "super,” while other films, such as X-Men: First Class, will propose to address the superhero as a response to historical social injustices. Ultimately, we will also consider how though we might not possess superpowers, superheroes inspire us to be responsible consumers of and contributors to culture.
