Central Texas Bluegrass Association BLUEGRASSBLUEGRASS BULLETINBULLETIN Volume 29 No 10 December, 2007

Our Best wishes to each and every one of you during this joyous time of the year.

May you all have a safe happy journey in your travels throughout Christmas and the New Year Holidays.

Eddie Collins and Friends with special guest Ruby Jane Smith

Eddie Collins kicked off his show Sunday November 25th at Artz Rib House with its usual bang ex- cept that it was evident that he was working under a handicap. He was suffering from either a cold or allergy because his voice was closer to that of Johnny Cash than his usual tone. This didn’t seem to hamper the overall sound of the band even though he had to struggle a time or two to hit some of the notes.

Their special guest that night was a 13 year old lady by the name of Ruby Jane Smith who recently came to Austin to join the Austin music scene. She, at the age of 10 years old, entered and won the Mississippi State Fiddle Championship. Past performances include The Grand Ole Opry and was re- cently featured on NPR. She is known as one of the world’s most up and coming junior fiddlers and is a fast-rising star in both Country and Bluegrass music.

She showed promise in music at an early age and started studying classical violin at age of two. At age 8 she was introduced to the sounds of Americana in Santa Fe, NM which led to the complete devo- tion to old time and Bluegrass music. The rest is history as she has gone on to win numerous fiddle contest through out the Southeast and Southwest. She considers herself a resident of both Texas and Mississippi. Her CD’s are available at Waterloo Records and Zinger Hardware and well worth the pur- chase.

Among the songs Sunday evening was, Ashoken Farewell, Wild Wood Flower and Bury Me Beneath the Willow. Featured above are: Ruby Jane on fiddle, Eddie Collins on guitar, Tom Elis on bass and Paul Sweeney on mandolin.

2 3 4 Innovative and noted instrumentalist, Tony Trischka was selected as the Banjo Player of the year at this year’s International Bluegrass Music Awards show held on the Grand Ole Opry Stage in Nashville, TN. A 35 year veteran of the music industry, Tony performed on the awards stage with his Deering Saratoga Star Tenbrooks model banjo. Tony’s avant-garde banjo stylings have inspired generations of progressive bluegrass Musicians, among whom we can number former student, Bela Fleck.

Tony has both a Hartford wooden tonering Deering banjo and the Saratoga Star Tenbrooks Model, Both of which he used in his award-winning recording, “Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular.” This recording won both the “Recorded Event of the Year” and the “Instrumental Album of the year” at this year’s IBMA Awards show in Nashville, TN. The CD features performances by , Bela Fleck, and , among others, And is available on . Tony, one of the top banjo teachers in the nation, Has created numerous instructional books and teaching DVDs which are available through Hal Leonard Publishers

Tony, a native of Syracuse, New York, was inspired to play banjo in 1963 when he heard The Kingston Trio’s recording of “Charlie and the MTA.” This is something he shares in Common with the head of the Deering Banjo Co., Greg Deering, who became interested in learning to play the banjo when he heard a Kingston Trio album in his home as a very young lad. Tony’s credentials are stellar and they include working on the sound track of movie ”Driving Miss Daisy,” appearing on Garrison Keillor’s show “Prairie Home Companion,” and being the musical leader of the Broadway production of “The Robber Bridegroom.” He has shared the stage and studio with folks such as David Grisman, Bela Fleck, Earl Scruggs, Steve Martin, Alison Brown, John Denver, The Boston Pops, Hazel Dickens, Ralph Stanley, and many others over his 35 year career.
