  • Air and Rail News: a Scenic Train in Scotland, Bostonwestchester Flights
http://nyti.ms/1QzPeto TRA V EL Air and Rail News: A Scenic Train in Scotland, BostonWestchester Flights SEPT. 14, 2015 In Transit By ELAINE GLUSAC Our morning travel news digest, with deals, tips and anything else that travelers may want to know. SCOTLAND’S NEW SCENIC TRAIN Restoring a train route that once shipped Scottish tartan, tweed, wool and coal, the new Borders Railway in Scotland, opened last week, aims to boost tourism in the Scottish Borders region south of Edinburgh. The first new train line built in Britain in more than a century, the route runs 30 miles from the capital to Tweedbank in just under an hour, providing access to attractions including the 15thcentury Rosslyn Chapel, popularized in the film “The Da Vinci Code,” and Abbotsford House, former home of Sir Walter Scott. Special steam trains with refurbished vintage carriages will run on the line most Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays through Oct. 18, with tickets from £40 ($60) per adult. Regular roundtrips cost £16 ($24). IN PORTLAND, A CARFREE BRIDGE (BIKES AND WALKERS WELCOME) Strictly for use by light rail trains, buses, streetcars, bikes and pedestrians, a new bridge across the Willamette River opened in Portland, Ore., on Saturday. The city claims Tilikum Crossing, at 1,720 feet, is the longest carfree span in the country. Fourteenfootwide outer lanes on either side of the bridge are reserved for cyclists and pedestrians. In addition to improving transit connections, the bridge presents a new spectacle at night in LED lighting that changes colors based on river conditions, including water height, speed and temperature.
