  • End Time Chronology from Jesus in the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) Shawn Nelson
November 5, 2017 End Time Chronology from Jesus in the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) Shawn Nelson (1) How does Matthew 24 fit into our on-going study? The view we’ve been teaching (Premillennialism) says there will be a literal world leader (antichrist) who is able to establish peace treaty in the Middle East between Israel and her neighbors for 7 years (Dan. 9:24-27). In the middle of the 7 years he walks into the temple in Jerusalem, takes away the sacrifices (Dan. 12:11), and declares himself to be God (Dan. 9:27; 11:31; Matt. 24:15; Mark 13:14; 2 Thess. 2:3-4). He forces everybody to worship him (2 Thess. 2:4; Rev. 13:15) and requires them to have a mark in order to buy or sell anything anywhere in the world (Rev. 13:16). Matthew 24 helps us see that Jesus’ taught the above scenario too. Jesus mentions all of the following: the existence of the nation of Israel, the temple in Jerusalem, the antichrist, tribulation, the second coming (and possibly rapture). The Temple to Be Destroyed 24 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. 2 And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? [the Jerusalem temple] Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” The Disciples’ Two Questions 3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? [temple being destroyed] And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” The Tribulation 4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.

Her book was inspired by a desire to prove (or disprove) Dr. Ernest Martin’s research in The Temples That Jerusalem Forgot. Ms. Sams wrote a second book in 2017, The Jerusalem Temple Mount: A Compendium of Ancient Descriptions expanding the argument in her first book, itemizing and analyzing 375 ancient descriptions of the Temple, Fort Antonia, and environs, all confirming a Gihon location for God’s Temples.1 Her books and articles greatly advance Dr. Martin’s arguments. David Sielaff, ASK Editor Marilyn Sams: The siege of Titus has been the subject of many books and papers, but always from the false perspective of the Jerusalem Temple Mount’s misidentification.2 The purpose of this paper is to illuminate additional aspects of the siege, in order to show how they cannot reasonably be applied to the current models of the temple and Fort Antonia, but can when the “Temple Mount” is identified as Fort Antonia. Conflicts Between the Rebellious Leaders Prior to the Siege of Titus A clarification of the definition of “Acra” is crucial to understanding the conflicts between John of Gischala and Simon of Giora, two of the rebellious [Jewish] faction leaders, who divided parts of Jerusalem 1 Her second book shows the impossibility of the so-called “Temple Mount” and demonstrate the necessity of a Gihon site of the Temples.

  • Capernaum, the City of Jesus
Capernaum “Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.” (Mark 1:21) © 2017 David Padfield www.padfield.com Scripture taken from the New King James Version. Copyright 1982 by Thomas Nelson, Inc. Used by permission. All rights reserved. Capernaum, The City Of Jesus Introduction I. The city of Capernaum was a small fishing village on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, about two miles west of the Jordan River. A. The Hebrew name for this village is Keœfar NahΩum, which means, “village of Nahum.” B. While this ancient town is not mentioned by name in the Old Testament, it is mentioned sixteen times in the New Testament. C. Matthew refers to Capernaum as our Lord’s “own city” (Matt 9:1), for it became the center of His Galilean ministry. D. This is interesting since He was not born in Capernaum, His parents did not live in there, and He did not grow up there! E. Jesus performed more miracles and preached more sermons in and around Capernaum than at any other place during His entire ministry. F. The residents of this prosperous town were common people who made their living from fishing, agriculture, and trade. G. The road leading to Damascus passed nearby, providing a commercial link with regions to the north and south. H. Capernaum was also a garrison town, housing a detachment of Roman soldiers, under a centurion, along with government officials. II. It was in the vicinity of Capernaum that Jesus chose several of His apostles.

  • Boundaries, Barriers, Walls
1 Boundaries, Barriers, Walls Jerusalem’s unique landscape generates a vibrant interplay between natural and built features where continuity and segmentation align with the complexity and volubility that have characterized most of the city’s history. The softness of its hilly contours and the harmony of the gentle colors stand in contrast with its boundar- ies, which serve to define, separate, and segregate buildings, quarters, people, and nations. The Ottoman city walls (seefigure )2 separate the old from the new; the Barrier Wall (see figure 3), Israelis from Palestinians.1 The former serves as a visual reminder of the past, the latter as a concrete expression of the current political conflict. This chapter seeks to examine and better understand the physical realities of the present: how they reflect the past, and how the ancient material remains stimulate memory, conscious knowledge, and unconscious perception. The his- tory of Jerusalem, as it unfolds in its physical forms and multiple temporalities, brings to the surface periods of flourish and decline, of creation and destruction. TOPOGRAPHY AND GEOGRAPHY The topographical features of Jerusalem’s Old City have remained relatively con- stant since antiquity (see figure ).4 Other than the Central Valley (from the time of the first-century historian Josephus also known as the Tyropoeon Valley), which has been largely leveled and developed, most of the city’s elevations, protrusions, and declivities have maintained their approximate proportions from the time the city was first settled. In contrast, the urban fabric and its boundaries have shifted constantly, adjusting to ever-changing demographic, socioeconomic, and political conditions.2 15 Figure 2.

  • Theatrical Drama and Franciscan Simplicity in Oratorios by Ferenc Liszt
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology 13,2013 © PTPN & Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, Poznań 2013 JOANNA SUBEL Department of Musicology, University of Wroclaw Theatrical drama and Franciscan simplicity in oratorios by Ferenc Liszt ABSTRACT: The works of Ferenc Liszt are both influenced by the romantic mood and various oppos ing trends of the church music of his era. In his oratorios Die Legende von der heiligen Elisabeth and Christus, as well as in the unfinished St Stanislaus, one may discern such features as drama, mysti cism, universalism, and national elements. In these vocal-instrumental works the composer makes use of two languages, German and Latin, as well as of various types of the archaisms such as quotations from Gregorian melodies. In Liszt’s compositions, choral monodies become ‘motifs’ - the recurring themes which appear frequently and in a variety of versions. Dramatic expression and lyricism are particularly dominant in St Elisabeth. The Christus oratorio, which resembles a misterium, because of the absence of a libretto and the use of liturgical texts, is characterised by the abundance of harmonic solutions. The oratorios reveal both the composer’s uncommon piety and his striving to reform the church music of his times. KEYWORDS: Ferenc Liszt, oratorio, Die Legende von der heiligen Elisabeth, Christus, St Stanislaus Ferenc Liszt’s vocal-and-instrumental works remain almost unknown in Poland. His art songs are not performed and his oratorio works are presented extremely rarely, usually as part of festival programmes.

  • Day 6 Wednesday March 8 Masada Ein-Gedi Mount of Olives Palm
Day 6 Wednesday March 8 2023 Masada Ein-Gedi Mount of Olives Palm Sunday Walk Tomb of Prophets Garden of Gethsemane Masada Suggested Reading: The Dove Keepers by Alice Hoffman // Josephus, War of the Jews (book 7) Masada is located on a steep and isolated hill on the edge of the Judean desert mountains, on the shores of the Dead Sea. It was the last and most important fortress of the great Jewish rebellion against Rome (66-73 AD), and one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Israel. The last stand of the Jewish freedom fighters ended in tragic events in its last days, which were thoroughly detailed in the accords of the Roman historian of that period, Josephus Flavius. Masada became one of the Jewish people's greatest icons, and a symbol of humanity's struggle for freedom from oppression. Israeli soldiers take an oath here: "Masada shall not fall again." Masada is located on a diamond-shaped flat plateau (600M x 200M, 80 Dunam or 8 Hectares). The hill is surrounded by deep gorges, at a height of roughly 440M above the Dead sea level. During the Roman siege it was surrounded with a 4KM long siege wall (Dyke), with 8 army camps (A thru G) around the hill. Calendar Event 1000BC David hides in the desert fortresses (Masada?) 2nd C BC Hasmonean King (Alexander Jannaeus?) fortifies the hill 31 BC Major earthquake damages the Hasmonean fortifications 24BC Herod the great builds the winter palace and fort 4BC Herod dies; Romans station a garrison at Masada 66AD Head of Sicarii zealots, Judah Galilee, is murdered Eleazar Ben-Yair flees to Masada, establishes and commands a community of zealots 67AD Sicarii sack Ein Gedi on Passover eve, filling up their storerooms with the booty 66-73AD Great Revolt of the Jews against the Romans 70AD Jerusalem is destroyed by Romans; last zealots assemble in Masada (total 1,000), commanded by Eleazar Ben-Yair 73AD Roman 10th Legion under Flavius Silvia, lay a siege; build 8 camps, siege wall & ramp 73AD After several months the Romans penetrate the walls with tower and battering ram.

  • The Tomb of David in Jerusalem William H. Shea
Andrew University Seminary Studies, Autumn 1996, Vol. 34, No. 2, 287-293. Copyright O 1996 by Andrews University Press. THE TOMB OF DAVID IN JERUSALEM WILLIAMH. SHEA Biblical Research Institute Silver Spring, MD 20904 As one of the most important personages of Israel, King David must have been buried in regal style in an imposing tomb. Yet, surprisingly, the tomb where David was buried has not yet been discovered. A traditional location on the new Mount Zion is pointed out as the location of his burial. The upper room where Jesus is supposed to have met with his disciples is upstairs from this tomb. While David may have been buried there, it could only have been a secondary burial, after his body or bones were removed from his original tomb. The approximate location of David's primary tomb is limited by the geography and history of Jerusalem. The city is built on four hills, one in the southeast, one in the northeast, one in the northwest, and one in the southwest. The southeastern hill, known as Mount Ophel was the first of the four to be occupied. This was the Jebusite city which David conquered as described in 2 Sam 5. The northeastern hill, today known as the temple mount, was purchased by David and finally built upon by Solomon. Since this hill was not built on until after the death of David, the city of David in which he was buried, according to 1 Kgs 2:10, could not have been located there. The other two hills of ancient Jerusalem offer even less possibility as the burial site for David.

When heritage is used to legitimize violence and occupation: the case of Silwan, between "biblical archaeology" and djihad Mathilde Brunet R6 - Brent Patterson June 2020 Cover page Visitors cross a bridge above remains of an excavated palace overlooking the Palestinian East Jerusalem village of Silwan, at the City of David national park. Courtesy Hadas Parush for National Geographic (December 2019 Issue) Contents Introduction 4 Elad: Religious Nationalism and Archgeology 8 Israel’s instrumentalization of ‘collective memory’ 13 The negation of Palestinians’ identity 21 Conclusion 27 Bibliography 28 The Silwan neighborhood, in the southern area of West-Jerusalem, is an area that catalyzes many of the aspects of the confrontation between Israel and Palestine. From a ge- ographical point of view, the neigh-borhood straddles the area of Jerusalem illegally occupied by Israel at the expense of In- ternational law, and the area that has been entrusted to Israel by international agreement. The religious value of Jerusalem motivated the establishment of its status as a corpus separa- tum1 in 1947, the city thus becoming an enclave administrated by the United Nations.2 This regime places the city under the Fourth Geneva Convention,3 invalidating the sovereignty of Israel over the site.4 The area is in fact surrounded by a num- ber of important religious, historical and political sites: the Old City walls and the Mount of Olives cemetery to the North, Mount Zion to the South-East, and the Ras Al-Aamud neigh- borhood to the East, an area where the border between the occupied territories and the Palestinian territories remains un- clear.5 Its proximity to these sites, in particular to the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as its location on important excavation sites, places it in the visual 1 “separated body” 2 The United Nations, General Assembly resolution 181 (II), November 29, 1947 3 The United Nations, Convention (IV) relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, August 12, 1949.

  • Sunday, March 20, 2016 - Palm Sunday
Sunday, March 20, 2016 - Palm Sunday “Jesus Causes a Stir” - Matthew 21:1-11 The road from Jericho to Jerusalem was a treacherous one, through difficult passes, and climbing from near the Dead Sea at 1300 feet below sea level, to the peak of the Mount of Olives at 2700 feet above sea level (a climb of 4000 feet) in about 25 miles. To avoid Samaria Jews from the region of Galilee would travel south along the east bank of the Jordan River, about 65 miles, then cross the river at Jericho, and proceed west up to Jerusalem, the religious capital of Judaism. Large groups would make this journey together at the time of the Passover. It is possible that several hundred pilgrims were accompanying Jesus as He made His way to the feast. They saw His miracles and were amazed by Him. As the entourage passed through Bethany, the town of Mary, Martha and Lazarus, and approached Bethphage at the top of the Mount of Olives, Jesus pauses long enough to send two disciples on an errand - to go into the village and get a donkey's colt, in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9. The people travelling with Jesus were religious enough to make the connection - Jesus is riding the donkey's young colt, so He must be the king! The crowd is frenzied as Jesus gets on the beast, and they throw their outer garments on the road before Him, with palm branches, and begin crying out the words of honor reserved for a king - "Hosanna, Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord! Hosanna in the heavens!" The crowd leads Jesus the mile or so of road down the Mount of Olives, past the Garden of Gethsemane, and across the bottom of the valley, up the winding road through the gate into the temple precinct.
