Our School Prospectus is updated annually to include any changes required by the Welsh Assembly Government or other related bodies. A copy of the prospectus is generally issued to parents whose children are starting comprehensive school for the first time. Parents are informed if any amendments are made to the existing prospectus. There have been no amendments made to the prospectus this year.

9. School Development Plan

The School Development Plan is annually developed and the School Strategic Plan is developed every three years by the school and Governors. These plans identify the direction the school will take to deliver curriculum and bring about improvements. The 2017/18 School Development Plan has been accepted by Governors and is currently being implemented. The plan is regularly monitored and revised to take account of progress made and any changes to curriculum requirements. The targets set include short, medium and long-term aims. Targets are regularly reviewed by the Governing Body.

10. Use of the Welsh Language - Communication

Y Pant is an English medium school. Lessons and other school activities are communicated through the medium of English. The use of the Welsh language is promoted by the use of incidental Welsh with all pupils throughout the school day.

Pupils for whom English is a second language are catered for according to their needs with input from appropriate personnel.

In line with statutory guidelines all pupils study Welsh throughout their time in school. All but a very few sit an external exam in Welsh at the end of year 11.

11. Post Inspection Action Plan

Governors are responsible for drawing up the Action Plan to address any key issues raised by Inspectors during the inspection of the School. Parents are provided with a copy of the summary report produced by the inspectors.

At Y Pant the post inspection plan in subsumed into the whole school development plan. Governors monitor progress of these plans at their termly meetings.

13. Community Focused Schools

The school continues to be used by the community for a range of activities outside of normal school hours. These include sporting, charitable and cultural activities. Our school library is open for study from 8 until 4 each day. A range of provision is organised by the YEPS team for our pupils to enjoy, and a number of departments run sessions after school to either extend their learning or provide enrichment activities.

We work closely with PC Stuart Dean our PCSO, the Eye to Eye Counselling Service, Careers Wales, YEPS and Health to provide support and advise to our young people. Many of these services assist in the delivery of Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Commented [sb1]: Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification (WBQ)s within the school day. Commented [sb2R1]: Can we put this in full please Commented [sb3]: Can we put this in full please

14. Review of School Policies

The school has a large number of Policy documents covering both curriculum and non-subject areas.

All statutory policies are reviewed and annually presented for governor approval. Some are made available on the web-site. All non-statutory documents are reviewed on a two year cycle and are then presented for governor approval.

These are all available at parental request from the school.

15. Additional Learning Needs

The School’s Policy for the Assessment of and Provision for, pupils with additional learning needs is summarised as follows:

The School’s policy for the identification, assessment and provision for pupils with Additional Learning Needs is consistent with the requirements of the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice for Wales issued by the Welsh Assembly Government in January 2002.

The School’s Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) works closely with all other members of staff to ensure that individual educational plans are developed and implemented to meet the needs of pupils, appropriate to those who require them.

The SENCO also liaises with all members of staff, to ensure that the progress of all pupils is regularly monitored and assessed and to ensure that each pupil reaches his or her potential.

During the current academic year, on the date of the Pupil Level Commented [sb4]: Is this an abbreviation or is it known as Annual School Census(PLASC): this? 146 pupils were on School Action/Early Years Action. 21 pupils were on School Action Plus/Early Action Plus (including those with Notes in Lieu). No pupils were undergoing Statutory Assessment. 9 pupils had statements of Special Educational Needs.

During the 2016-2017 financial year £77,350 was allocated from the LA to meet the requirements of pupils with Additional Learning Needs.

There were no changes to the policy during the 2016-2017 academic year.

16. Access for Disabled Pupils

The governing body is mindful of the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 and The Equality Act 2010 in drawing Commented [sb5]: This Act has been repealed and has up school documents and in the day to day operation of the whole site. been replaced by the Equality Act 2010

The school is committed to ensuring that all pupils are able to participate in the school curriculum and (where they desire) in activities such as after school clubs, leisure/sporting events and educational visits. All aspects of accessibility, including access to written information are included in the planning process.

The Authority has in place an Accessibility Strategy and in line with this strategy has had an audit of the school site undertaken, as part of an Authority wide brief, to identify any potential barriers and (ultimately) improve the access to the school.

17. Fabric of the Building & Provision of Toilet Facilities

The school moved into the new school in January 2017. Accommodation in this block is excellent and it has transformed the way our teachers teach and our pupils learn. However, the school has already been painted four times as the corridor paint marks very easily. A solution for this is being looked into by the LA.

The Drama Block and Gym however do need some further investment. The Gym is due to have a sum of money spent on it by the LA this is much needed as the Gym itself is in an adequate state. The school has painted the changing rooms and the sports hall over the summer and plans to improve the environment of the corridor shortly.

The Drama Block has already had some alternations to the Additional Learning Needs ALN department and the whole block has been Commented [sb6]: Can we put in full please? painted. Windows, lighting and toilets here could really do with being replaced or improved. The school has been made aware that some of this work may be undertaken by the LA. Two classrooms have benefitted from new carpets provided by the school.

Cleaning Direct are currently employed by the school to keep the accommodation clean.

19. Attendance Information

Listed below are the pupil attendance figures for the academic year 2016/17: 2016/7 Target 2017/18 Overall 95% 95.2% Authorised Absences 3.6 3.5 Unauthorised Absences 1.4 1.3

Heads of Progress together with the Attendance Officer monitor attendance daily. A range of staged strategies are implemented when attendance becomes a concern. These range from meeting with Commented [sb7]: Can we out in full please parents to involving the Attendance and Wellbeing Officer AWO depending on circumstances.

Absence from school is a contributing factor in low pupil achievement, so the Welsh Assembly Government is targeting improved attendance. Parents can help this situation by informing the school if they feel that there are any problems that are preventing pupils from attending or causing the pupil to feel that they do not want to attend school.

20. Admission/Transition Arrangements

The County Borough Council is the Admissions Authority for all schools (other than Church schools where the schools governing body is the admissions authority) within the Authority’s boundary. The schools admission arrangements are, therefore, operated in line with the Authority’s policy on school admissions which is contained in the publication Starting School book. The book is made available to parents at the point of their application for their child’s admission to school. The contents of this book can also be accessed online on the Authority’s website.
