Red Sea Governor opens the Japanese-Egyptian school in Hurghada

On the 22nd of January each year, the Red Sea governorate celebrates its national day to mark the anniversary of the battle of Shedwan on 1970. The Egyptian-Japanese education project is a result of mutual agreements signed between t he two countries, in which Egypt benefits from the Japanese ed ucational system by applying it in 45 state-run schools. The selected schools will follow the Egyptian curriculum, in addition to applying the 'Tokosto Plus' educational system followed in Japan. The 'Tokosto Plus' system works to rehabilitate the behavior of students by engaging them in numerous Japanese activities that focus on making individuals aware of the value of time and cleanliness. During these festive days, General Ahmed Abdullah, the Red Sea Governor, opened the Egyptian-Japanese school in Hurghada. The governor said that the school was designed in a Japanese architectural style on a total area of about 12 thousand square meters that includes 11 classrooms and 40 rooms for activities, laboratories, library, gymnasium and an advanced water cycle at a total cost of 20 million pounds.

Days of Lithuania on the Red Sea

The Lithuanian community in Hurghada is celebrating the centenary of the restoration of Lithuania's indepen dence. It introduces culture and history of Lithuania to the public of the Red Sea through a series of events. The festivities opened with the "Lithuanian Days" held in the Hurghada Cultural Center on October 25-26, where guests enjoyed piano, violin and kankles (the traditional Lithuanian national instrument) music by the renowned Lithuanian composer, M.K.Ciurlionis. Lithuanian folk dances and songs, national meals, and artisan works were highlighted. Three exhibitions opened to mark the occasion. There was an exhibition of the most famous Lithuanian painter of the XIX- XX centurie~, a pioneer of symbolism and abst ractionism, M.K.Ciurlionis. Additionally, the M.Jovaisa photo exhibition "Unseen Lithuania" and the exhibition of Hurghada based artist, J.Vitkeviciute, who presented authentic paper cuttings, enriched by traditional folkloric elements. The event was opened by Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Arab Republic of Egypt, A.Daunoravicius and the Governor of the Red Sea Provinces, his Excellency Major General Ahmed Abdalla. On the 1st of December, M.K.Ciurlionis and J.VitkeviciOte exhibitions were opened at the El Gouna Library and will run until December 31st. ...... _ RED SEA CELEBRATES THE 49TH NATIONAL DAY & 67TH NATIONAL POLICE DAY h;.;~~~~

The festivities related to the Red Sea National Day began with the opening of ai-Rahman AI-Rahim Mosque on January 18th and 22nd with a crown of flowers placed at the foot of the new monu ment, followed by carnival "flower procession" from Abdel Moneim Riad. Great concerts took place at the AI-Nasr Theater in Hurghada on January 22nd and as well on 25th in recognition of Police Day. Major General Ahmed Abdullah, Red Sea Governor, attended the ceremony held at the AI-NasrTheater in Hurghada. Many officials and community members attended to celebrate the National Day of the Province. Red Sea Governor congratulated all on the occa sion, which coincided with the victorious anniversary of the armed forces against the historic Israeli aggression on Shedwan Island in Hurghada in 1970. The concert included a number of shows to include a firework dis play, tanoura and other folk dances & songs that brought joy to all. A film on the commemoration of the battle of Shedwan fol lowed after the entertainment program. During the meeting devoted to the Red Sea National Day, which was held at the general office of the Governorate, Major General Ahmad Abdullah, Governor of the Red Sea, expressed there is an aim to turn Hurghada into the largest tourist destination in the world! He further explained that there is a huge financial funding provided by the governorate to enter into several proj ects on the Red Sea, from the development of slums, the rehabili tation of the sewage system and development and coordination of the internal roads in the tourist city which is soon to complete.. Red Sea Governor also made a visit to Safaga & Marsa Alam cities to inaugurate a number of mega national projects during the week's festivities. Red Sea Governorate cooperates with the largest engineering companies to develop the city of Hurghada, especially the tourist walkway in the city, which is a popular destination of foreign guests and residents of the city.

Major General Ahmed Abdullah, Red Sea Governor, congratulated Major General Ashraf Hashish , Director of Security on the occasion of the celebration of the 67th National Police Day. The governor also presented the governor's shield to the director of security in recognition of the prominent role of the police in serving the citizens and providing security and stability to the homeland. He stressed that Egypt will not forget its martyrs of the police and the army who sacrificed their lives for freedom and independency of their country.

On 25 January 1952, Egypt's police fought a heroic battle against the British occupation in lsmailia, a city overlooking the west bank of the Suez Canal. The British occupation, which was present in Egypt from 1882 until1956, issued a warning to the Egyptian forces to evacuate the area so they could take full control of the Canal but the police forces stood their grounds.

The National Day festivities continued into the first week of February.

After searching for years through screening the vast area of the Abu Qir Bay off the coast of Egypt, French ar chaeologist Franck Goddio and his team discovered a colossal face emerged from the watery shadows. Goddio had finally encountered Thonis-Heracleion, completely submerged 6.5 kilometers off 's coast. Among the underwater ruins were 64 ships, 700 anchors, a treasure trove of gold coins, statues standing at 16 feet, and most notably the remains of a massive temple to the god Amun-Gereb, and the tiny sarcophagi for the animals that were brought there as offerings. The ruins and artifacts made from granite and diorite are re markably preserved, and give a glimpse into what was, 2300 years ago, one of the great port cities of the world. The harbor ofThonis-Heracleion controlled all the trade into Egypt. Built around its grand temple, the city was crisscrossed with a network of canals, a kind of ancient Egyptian Venice, and its islands were home to small sanc tuaries and homes.

Thonis-Heracleion (the Egyptian and Greek names of the city) is a city lost between legend and reality. Before the founda tion of Alexandria in 331 BC, the city knew glorious times as the obligatory port of entry to Egypt for all ships coming from the Greek world. It had also a religious importance because of the temple of Amun, which played an important role in rites associated with its dynasty continuity. The city was founded probably around the 8th century BC, underwent di verse natural catastrophes, and finally sank entirely into the depths of the Mediterranean in the 8th century AD. Prior to its discovery in 2000 by the European Institute for Underwa ter Archaeology (IEASM), directed by Franck Goddio, no trace of Thonis-Heracleion had been found. Its name was almost razed from the memory of mankind, only preserved in an cient classic texts and rare inscriptions found on land by ar chaeologists. The Greek historian Herodotus (5th century BC) tells us of a great temple that was built where the famous hero Herakles first set foot on to Egypt. He also reports of Helen's visit to Heracleion with her lover Paris before the Trojan War. More than four centuries after Herodotus' visit to Egypt, the geographer Strabo observed that the city of Hera cleion, which possessed the temple of Herakles, is located straight to the east of Canopus at the mouth of the Canopic branch of the River Nile. With a unique survey-based approach that utilizes the most sophisticated technical equipment, Franck Goddio and his team, in cooperation with the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, was able to locate, map and ex cavate parts of the city ofThonis-Heracleion. The city is located within an overall research area of 11 by 15 kilo meters in the western part of Aboukir Bay at a depth of approximately 10 meters. Franck Goddio has solved a historic enigma that has puzzled Egyptologists over the years: the archaeological material has revealed that Heracleion and Thonis were in fact one and the same city with two names; Heracleion being the name of the city for the Greeks and Thonis for the Egyptians. The objects recovered from the excavations illustrate the cities' beauty and glory, the magnificence of their grand temples and the abundance of historic evidence: colossal statues, inscriptions and architectural elements, jewelry and coins, ritual objects and ceramics - a civilization frozen in time. The quantity and quality of the archaeological material excavated from the site ofThonis-Hera cleion show that this city had known a time of opulence and a peak in its occupation from the 6th to the 4th cen tury BC. This is readily seen in the large quantity of coins and ceramics dated to this period. The port ofThonis Heracleion had numerous large basins and functioned as a hub of international trade. The intense activity in the port fostered the city's prosperity. The city extended all around the temple and a network of canals in and around the city must have given it a lake dwelling appearance. On the islands and islets dwellings and second ary sanctuaries were located. Excavations here have revealed beautiful archaeological material such as bronze statuettes. On the north side of the temple to Herakles, a grand canal flowed through the city from east to west and connected the port basins with a lake to the west.

The oldest mention of Canopus can be found in a poem by Solon, from the first half of the 6th century BC. According to the poet Nicander (2nd century BC), Menelaus' helmsman, Canopus, died here, bitten by a viper on the sands ofThonis. The city located close by was named after this unfortunate sailor: Ca nopus. During the last Pharaonic dynasties and the Ptolemaic period, Cane pus was famous for its sanctuaries of Osiris and Serapis. Pilgrims from all over the world came to visit in search of miraculous healing. Throughout the exis tence of the grand sanctuary of Herakles in Heracleion, the God Osiris was taken from here on his ritual baroque to his sanctuary in Canopus. This proces sion created a mystical tie between the two neighboring cities. Emperor Hadri an, in order to keep alive the memories of the good times he enjoyed in Cano pus, had a replica of part of Canopus built at Villa Hadriana outside Rome. After the destruction of the temples by Christian iconoclasts, the construction of a powerful monastery followed. It became famous for holding the relics of Saint John and Saint Cyril. Those relics brought to the monastery the same powers for miraculous healings as the former pagan temple of Osiris-Serapis and consequently the site continued to be a place of pilgrimage. Two kilometers to the east of the modern port of Aboukir, the IEASM have identified a zone that contains numerous archaeological remains, including some that clearly corresponded to those discovered by Prince Toussoun in 1933. This site consists of a row of ruins 150 meters long. Broken shafts of col umns of red granite are combined with limestone construction blocks and other architectural elements. Artifacts, including jewels, crosses, coins and seals of the Byzantine Period, were found during investigations here. To the north of these structures, under almost two meters of sand, are the well preserved foundations of a wall that measures 103 meters long. It is suggest ed that this wall would have surrounded a temple, which from the scale of the wall would be the largest Egyptian shrine found thus far in the region. Pieces of granite inscribed with hieroglyphs were found here. These proved to be fur ther parts of the Naos of the Decades, a famous monolithic chapel, parts of which had already been found underwater at this location by Prince Toussoun in 1933. Among the other fragments of statuary found in this area was a re markable marble head of the god Sera pis, dating from the Ptolemaic Period. (Source: Franck Goddio Foundation) - -- -

A FULL MOON ON THE EQUINOX For the first time in nearly 40 years, the spring equinox will occur on the same day as March's Full Worm Moon. The last time that these two events landed on the same date was on March 20, 1981. March's full Moon will also be a supermom, meaning that it will be slight ly larger and brighter than most of the other full Moons this year. Vernal Equinox marks the astronomical first day of spring in the North ern Hemisphere. It is a signal of new beginnings and nature's renewal. Speaking of birds, the increasing sunlight is triggers birds to sing. Trees, shrubs, and flowers are sensitive to temperature and day-length, too! Since ancient days, people have used them as indicators of when the weather is right for planting.

The Persian New Year Day- Nowruz, Mother's Day in Arabic countries and many other folkloric events related to the Spring Equinox are cele brated in the world. International Day of Nowruz ... 1 Celebrating Nowruz means the affirmation of life in harmony with nature, aware ness of the inseparable link between constructive labor and natural cycles of re newal and a solicitous and respectful attitude towards natural sources of life. The word Nowruz means new day.. Nowruz marks the first day of spring. It is celebrated as the beginning of the new year by more than 300 million people all around the world and has been celebrat ed for over 3000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions.
