Why do you think people so often reject the prophetic message?

SECOND READING Paul speaks of the inevitability of anxiety in life. How does your faith assist you in handling what makes you anxious?

GOSPEL READING In the story of the healing of a demon- possessed man, Mark reports how the demons knew Jesus’ true identity as “the Holy One of God.” What does this reveal about the unseen order?

4 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ©LPi

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the month of January and tomorrow we enter into the month of February. How time flies so fast. Yet we deal with the same concerns and challenges, how we can go back to the normal pace of our lives. COVID-19 has totally changed our lives even in observance of our tradition and celebration may it be in our family, in our workplace or even in our church.

Like for example with the feast of St. Blaise coming up, we normally do the blessing of throat with crossed candles over our throat while the priest invokes the prayer of blessing. Now we cannot do it anymore. Instead, the priest will just be extending his hands while maintaining a social distance to anybody who would like to be prayed over and invoke the intercession of St. Blaise on his feast day.

Another tradition or ritual practice that we do as Catholics is the imposition of ashes on our forehead on Ash Wednesday. We are accustomed to receiving ashes on our forehead that day. However, because of our on-going dealing with COVID-19, the Diocese of Greensburg following the recommendation of the United States Conference of Catholic has necessitated many modifications to provide us safety.

Fr. Michael Sikon explained, to reduce the risk of transmitting the coronavirus, it is not permitted this year to “sign” the faithful with ashes in the customary fashion. Rather, on Ash Wednesday the tradi- tion of being marked with ashes will take place in a different fashion, through a Sprinkling with Ashes.

Sprinkling with Ashes is a custom observed in many countries throughout the world. The minister, using their thumb and index finger, secures a pinch of ashes from the vessel containing the ashes. Without using words, the minister then sprinkles these ashes on the heads of the recipients.

Through this ancient practice we witness to our intention to undertake penitential practices during these Lenten days. We join with the whole Church throughout the world in acknowledging our need for continuing conversion. We express our hope and firm conviction that through Christ’s victory over sin and death our tears shall one day be turned to rejoicing.

I hope this helps us in preparing for the coming feast of St. Blaise and Ash Wednesday.

Father Ron

Celebrate the Feast of

On February 3, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr. On this day, it is customary to bless throats using blessed candles. As Father Ron explained in his article, even though the blessing of throats with candles is not possible this year, you can still receive a special blessing at Masses as follows:

St. Mary, Mother of God, Yatesboro St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Kittanning Tuesday, February 2 at the 8:30 a.m. Mass Wednesday, February 3 at the 7:00 p.m. Mass

Come to either Mass and ask Saint Blaise for his intercession for good health.
