Document of Appointment for the Sale of Chameitz Congregation Shaare Zedek 5777 / 2017

For seven days, no leaven shall be found in your homes….You shall eat nothing leavened; in all the places where you dwell, you shall eat

unleavened . Exodus 12:19-20

Chameitz – leavened food products that are not acceptable during or items containing unacceptable ingredients – should ideally be consumed, given away, or destroyed before the holiday begins. Should this be impossible because of significant financial loss, chameitz should be stored out of sight in such a way that you will be sure not to use it during the holiday. This chameitz should then be sold, by means of this document or one like it, so that it is not in your legal possession during Passover. The ownership of these items will be transferred to a non-Jew until one hour after Passover ends – i.e. Tuesday, April 18 at 9:18 pm – and you should not partake of them until that time.

I, the undersigned, hereby appoint Jonah Geffen as my halakhic (legal) representative to sell all chameitz owned and possessed by me, knowingly or unknowingly, as stated in the and defined by the of the . This includes chameitz; chashash chameitz (foods items which are suspected of containing chameitz); ta’arovet chameitz (foods items in which chameitz is mixed); and chameitz that may have hardened and adhered to the surface of pans, pots, or other cooking or eating utensils. I also appoint him as my halakhic representative to lease all places where the aforementioned chameitz owned or possessed by me may be found, especially in the premises indicated below. Rabbi Geffen has the full authority to sell said chameitz and to lease said place or places where said chameitz may be found, upon terms and conditions as discretion dictates. Rabbi Geffen has the full authority to assign or appoint substitutes to act in my behalf with the same authority that I have invested in him. I hereby ratify and confirm all that Rabbi Geffen or a rabbinic substitute does or causes to be done in the matter of selling chameitz on my behalf.
