One involved a pit bull attacking a 48-year-old woman, another when a rat terrier Lust bit a child in the face, and a third when a Siberian husky attacked an infant, breaking the infant’s ribs. Take a wild guess as to which made over thirty news stations, including MSNBC. Yes, the pit bull, was the only dog to make it onto your television. Pit bulls are unfairly discriminated against because of how the media portrays them. The general public is only informed about pit bull bites, no other dog bites seem to be important enough to make the news. “They call us asking about dog bites every week or so. The media is only interested in pit bull bites. If a black lab caused a bad bite they won’t report on it,” said Nebraska Humane Society employee Jordan Koebel. “There are many dog bites the public will never hear about just because the breed of the dog is not looked upon as “vicious” like pit bulls are. Many of the pit bull bites you hear about aren’t near as bad as the media portrays them to be either. Many just barely break the skin.” Koebel has one pit bull and it had to be put through unneeded classes just because of its breed. This dog has never been bitten, attacked, or shown hints of having aggression, along with many other pit bulls, but still has to do special classes in the breed ambassadors program, just to keep the same status as other pets. What is round, black and white all over? I will give you a hint and no it is not a cow. It is a soccer ball! Soccer season is just around the corner and ready to begin. This years girl’s soccer team will be coached by Chris Von Mende. To some of these girls soccer is everything. To freshmen Liz Larson soccer is “A sport that I love and it’s my life.” According to senior Kaleigh Pearcy, she also thinks getting along is important to a team. “Hopefully this season will turn out like we did in ’06, when seniors got along with under classmen,” said Pearcy. The girls had a pre-season training which had started on February third. This pre-season conditioning allows the girls to get in shape before the real practices begin. Practices include maxing out, core/plyos drills, along with five minute jogging. Sounds like some intense training. But this could also allow the girls to meet their future team mates. Freshman Shelbie Lohrke said, “I am looking forward to playing for a new coach, team and making new friends.” Many girls along with Lohrke are looking forward to soccer. To keep the girls hyped up, go cheer them on in the sidelines at their home games or even at an away game. It could boost up their endurance to play a better game and better their chance at wining this season. What that has to do with water, I do not know, but what I do know is that in a society where sex is so prevalent, it can be hard to take it seriously. Part of doing what is best for you is getting tested. So much focus is put on pregnancy, but pregnancy is more easily prevented than STDs. No matter what you do, there is no way (besides not having sex at all) to fully protect yourself from getting an STD. There is really no way to tell if the person you are with has an STD either, since most of them do not have any visible symptoms. You’re probably sick of getting preached to about it, and honestly, so am I. But I really can not stress enough how important it is. According to the CDC, about 19 million people each year are infected with an STD, and about half of them are between the ages of 15-24. Let’s be honest, no one really wants to get tested, and in my experience it is because of one or more of these reasons. They can not afford it, they are afraid their parents will find out, they are scared it will hurt, or they are worried that they will actually have one. But, as I recently found out, all these reasons are crap and should not keep you from getting tested. Though it is a significant part of Council Bluffs history, The Black Angel Monument has I would be the world’s biggest hypocrite if I were just sitting here telling you to get tested without having the guts to do it myself.
