TURNER PRIZE: Most prestigious— yet also controversial Since its inception, the Turner Prize has been synonymous with new British art – and with lively debate. For while the prize has helped to build the careers of a great many young British artists, it has also generated controversy. Yet it has survived endless media attacks, changes of terms and sponsor, and even a year of suspension, to arrive at its current status as one of the most significant contemporary art awards in the world. How has this controversial event shaped the development of British art? What has been its role in transforming the new art being made in Britain into an essential part of the country’s cultural landscape? The Beginning The Turner Prize was set up in 1984 by the Patrons of New Art (PNA), a group of Tate Gallery benefactors committed to raising the profile of contemporary art. 1 The prize was to be awarded each year to “the person who, in the opinion of the jury, has made the greatest contribution to art in Britain in the previous twelve months”. Shortlisted artists would present a selection of their works in an exhibition at the Tate Gallery. The brainchild of Tate Gallery director Alan Bowness, the prize was conceived with the explicit aim of stimulating public interest in contemporary art, and promoting contemporary British artists through broadening the audience base. At that time, few people were interested in contemporary art. It rarely featured in non-specialist publications, let alone in the everyday conversations of ordinary members of the public. Turner Prize Winner Lubaina Himid to Exhibit Unique Instructional Version of Vernet’S Studio in South Africa
NOT A SINGLE STORY –Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid to exhibit unique instructional version of Vernet’s Studio in South Africa. Hosted from 12 May – 29 July at the NIROX Sculpture Park in the Cradle of Humankind, NOT A SINGLE STORY is a collaboration between the NIROX Foundation, South Africa and Wanås Konst, The Wanås Foundation, Sweden. NOT A SINGLE STORY is the NIROX Winter sculpture exhibition 2018. The exhibition and its educational program are made possible with the support of The Swedish Postcode Foundation, The Swedish Institute and the Swedish Embassy. NIROX Foundation: Facebook | Twitter| Instagram Wanås Konst, The Wanås Foundation: Facebook | Instagram On Saturday 12 May, the NIROX Sculpture Park opens the exhibition NOT A SINGLE STORY. The title references “The Danger of a Single Story,” a TED Talk presented by acclaimed novelist and feminist writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which posits that our differences strengthen rather than divides us. Curated by Elisabeth Millqvist and Mattias Givell, co-directors of the Wanås Foundation, the exhibition is a celebration of diversity and includes works made of wishes, space blankets and large scale sound pieces by established and emerging artists from the continent and abroad. Notable is the participation of 2017 Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid (ZNZ/UK) who will exhibit eight figures from the 26-piece installation Vernet’s Studio uniquely produced under instruction by studio artists at NIROX. This installation comprises of female artists from art history featuring the likes of Frida Kahlo, Rosemary Trocke, Maud Sulter and Georgia O’Keefe. This work is exemplary of Himid’s practise, which is embedded in foregrounding stories and narratives. -

Press Release Sean Scully The 12 / Dark Windows Sean Scully’s Studio, 447 West 17th Street, Chelsea, New York Lisson Gallery, 508 West 24th Street, New York 6 May – 17 June, 2021 The world in which we live, the existential threat from COVID and the environmental problems we face, has influenced me greatly in my art. - Sean Scully, 2021 Sean Scully will open a dual-presentation across two sites in Chelsea, New York, this May, unveiling new work created in his New York studio throughout 2020 and 2021, while the world was rocked by a global pandemic, extensive quarantine measures, Black Lives Matter protests, political instability and mass uncertainty. At Scully’s Chelsea studio, open exclusively for this showcase, the artist unveils a monumental new work entitled The 12 (2020), presented in its entirety for the first time. This twelve-panel piece is a grouping of Landline paintings, each with its own distinct personality ranging from spirited to sombre. A new Black Square Blue (2020) painting will also be on view at Scully's studio. The dual presentation continues at Lisson Gallery's flagship space on 508 West 24th Street which will house a significant multi-panelled painting entitled Dark Windows (2020): a suite of works created during some of the bleakest days of the COVID pandemic. The work will be presented alongside a series of new pastel drawings recently completed by the artist. The 12, a work comprising twelve unique Landline paintings, is an expansion on Scully’s ongoing series of lyrical paintings in which, since 1999, he has endeavoured to “integrate all the parts” of the horizon – physical and philosophical, poetic and pastoral. -

Turner to appear on the next £20 banknote Today, Bank of England Governor, Mark Carney, announced that J.M.W. Turner will appear on the next £20 banknote due to be issued by 2020. At the announcement at Turner Contemporary in Margate, the Governor revealed the image of Turner that will be used on the note. The selection of Turner is the first time the Bank of England has used the more open and transparent character selection process announced in December 2013. The process began in early 2015 with the formation of the Banknote Character Advisory Committee which as its first act selected the visual arts field. This was followed by a two month nomination period in summer 2015 during which members of the public could suggest a figure from the visual arts. The Bank received 29,701 nominations covering 590 eligible characters. The Committee, with input from public focus groups, then produced a shortlist which it discussed in detail with the Governor who made the final decision. Commenting on the decision, the Governor said: “I am delighted to announce that J.M.W. Turner has been chosen to appear on the next £20 note. Turner is perhaps the single most influential British artist of all time. His work was transformative, bridging the classical and modern worlds. His influence spanned his lifetime and is still apparent today. Turner bequeathed this painting to the nation, an example of his important contribution to British society. -

COMMUNITIES DIRECTORATE Turner Contemporary ANNUAL OPERATING PLAN 2008/09 Director: Amanda Honey Unit Manager: Victoria Pomery SECTION ONE - SERVICE PROFILE PURPOSE OF THE SERVICE Turner Contemporary’s mission is: To celebrate JMW Turner’s association with Margate in order to promote an understanding and enjoyment of historical and contemporary art – an accessible means of expression that enriches everyone’s live. In so doing, it will be a positive force in the social, economic, and cultural regeneration of Thanet and East Kent. Turner Contemporary is a major project that is featured specifically in a number of strategic documents including Vision for Kent: Theme 9: Enjoying Life in Kent and Towards 2010 (target 27). It is also one of the Local Investment Cornerstones in Thanet identified in “What Price Growth” Turner Contemporary is part of the Communities Directorate, and is working with Service Units within the Directorate, such as the Arts Development Unit, and with key strategic partners including Thanet District Council, Arts Council England (ACE) and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA). It is also working in partnership with other arts providers, including Tate, as well as with schools, Further and Higher Education providers. Education in the broadest sense is critical to Turner Contemporary's ethos and encompasses a wide range of people involved in formal and informal learning environments. At the heart of the project are two major strands - the building of the new gallery itself and a public arts programme of wide ranging exhibitions, talks and events, and out-reach work. This programme is already into its sixth year and a new building will enable significantly increased delivery as well a high profile focus and stimulus for the development of skills and training opportunities and cultural regeneration. -

Fuel For A Future Reminisce: A Journey To George Scott King We still don’t have a blind in our bathroom. Religiously, every week, my girlfriend tapes a new piece of plain A4 paper to the window. In her imagination this works as a temporary blind, stopping the local perverts and sex pests from staring at her while she has a shower. I don’t know why she doesn’t tape up three pieces of A4 to com- pletely block out the window, or why we don’t get a blind. As I stood in the shower a few weeks ago, trying to hide behind the sheet of paper, I was struck by a thought, ‘If we lived by the sea, with no neighbours, we wouldn’t need a blind. Or a piece of paper’. This is my ‘escape fantasy’. Nothing new. I dream of leaving Lon- don a few times every week. I don’t just think about leaving either, I take my fantasy to new heights, I research it, I live it. I’m one of those people you see in seaside towns; one of the tossers who spends their whole weekend looking in estate agents’ windows, blocking the pavement while loudly discussing the relative merits of the Kent coastline, marveling at how many ‘sea glimpses’ you can buy for the price of a basement flat in Finsbury Park. After the shower I go and I sit at my desk. I type ESTATE AGENTS WHITSTABLE into Google. It’s always the same thought process: ‘We could sell this house and move to the seaside. -
