This time we update you on two newly discovered invasive plant species and species to look out for this season in the Western Cape. SANBI’s BID targets localized invasive alien species. These species have not yet reached their full invasive potential and occur as relatively small or localized populations. Removal of these populations at an early stage of invasion will limit spread to other areas, save on future costs of control, and contribute to the ultimate goal of eradication of these species from South Africa. For more information on invasive alien species in South Africa, the latest National Status Report on Biological Invasions in South Africa is available here for download. A new book on Biological Invasions in South Africa has also just been published by Springer as part of its "Invading Nature" Series. Native plants of Sydney Harbour National Park: historical records and species lists, and their value for conservation monitoring Doug Benson National Herbarium of New South Wales, Royal Botanic Gardens, Mrs Macquaries Rd, Sydney 2000 AUSTRALIA [email protected] Abstract: Sydney Harbour National Park (lat 33° 53’S; long 151° 13’E), protects significant vegetation on the harbour foreshores close to Sydney City CBD; its floristic abundance and landscape beauty has been acknowledged since the writings of the First Fleet in 1788. Surprisingly, although historical plant collections were made as early as1802, and localised surveys have listed species for parts of the Park since the 1960s, a detailed survey of the flora of whole Park is still needed. This paper provides the first definitive list of the c.400 native flora species for Sydney Harbour National Park (total area 390 ha) showing occurrence on the seven terrestrial sub-regions or precincts (North Head, South Head, Dobroyd Head, Middle Head, Chowder Head, Bradleys Head and Nielsen Park). The list is based on historical species lists, records from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (formerly Dept of Environment, Climate Change and Water) Atlas, National Herbarium of New South Wales specimen details, and some additional fieldwork. 131 species have only been recorded from a single precinct site and many are not substantiated with a recent herbarium specimen (though there are historical specimens from the general area for many). Species reported in the sources but for which no current or historic specimen exists are listed separately as being of questionable/non-local status. -

ABSTRACT Callistamon rugulosus (Myrtaceae), an Australian native, is present in South Africa and has been seen naturalizing within pristine fynbos vegetation on Devil’s Peak, Cape Town, Western Cape. This study is to determine the current extent of this population, assess the invasive potential of C. rugulosus in South Africa by looking at the species’ behaviour and the climate suitability for the species in South Africa, determine whether this population is suitable for extirpation, and through a formal risk assessment, management recommendations are provide. The risk assessment indicated a medium risk of invasion by C. rugulosus in South Africa with and the listing category suggestion is category 1a or 1b under the South African National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004 Alien and Invasive Species Regulations. Additionally, the South- west part of the Western Cape along with Kwazulu-Natal are the most climatically suitable for establishment of C. rugulosus. The species is suitable for an eradication feasibility study and it is recommended that control methods used for C. rugulosus be improved to prevent resprouting, and that areas of invasion is managed to limit the movement of seeds and avoid further spread and establishment. -
Street Tree Identification Manual
Randwick City Council Street Tree Identification Manual Volume 5 - Tree Species M-R Compiled by Randwick City Council’s Tree Management Officer October 2007 Foreword This manual is intended to give the reader an overview of the characteristics and cultural requirements of each of the tree species nominated in Randwick City Council’s Street Tree Masterplan. Each species is identified firstly by its Botanical name - with a phonetic spelling directly underneath – followed by the Common name in the top right hand corner of the page. Underneath the Common name are details of the tree, including the origin of the species, the season in which it flowers (if appropriate) and a general description of its mature size and overall form. A photograph of a typical example of each tree species is provided to allow readers the opportunity to get an idea of the mature dimensions and overall form of the subject tree/shrub. The size dimensions specified in the manual are the average mature sizes that could be expected of nominated tree species growing within the City of Randwick and take into account various elements such as topography, exposure to wind, soil type, depth of soil, annual rainfall, etc. A brief description of the tree’s cultural requirements and preferred planting situation is also given – with particular emphasis placed on its suitability as a street and/or park tree and whether it is suitable for planting in confined areas or under overhead powerlines. Immediately underneath this description are the designated precincts where the tree is nominated for planting within Council’s Street Tree Masterplan. -

Figures and tables are inserted in the text near first referencing and are therefore not listed in the Table of Contents. This thesis contains a single bibliography to minimise duplication of referencing across the chapters. 2 Thesis outline Evaluating potentially invasive plants is an important part of invasive species management. Reports of several naturalized and invasive Melaleuca species in South Africa prompted an investigation into which species are in the country and of these which pose a risk. -
