José Clavell and Eric Mohlis are from the studio of Dr. James Stegall and perform this recital in partial fulfillment for a Graduate of Music Degree in Choral Conducting. Conductors

Mr. Eric Mohlis is in his final year as a graduate student in the Choral Conducting program at Western Illinois University. He currently studies conducting under Dr. James C. Stegall. He is a 2008 graduate of Luther College (Decorah, Iowa) where he earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Music Performance and K-12 Music Education. He studied conducting under Dr. Craig Arnold and voice under Dr. Kristen Wunderlich. He will become Director of Choral Activities at Dallas Center- Grimes High School in Grimes, Iowa in August 2015.

Previously, he served as 6-12 Vocal Music Director at Underwood Community Schools (Underwood, Iowa) from 2008-2010 and as Director of Choral Activities at Vinton-Shellsburg High School (Vinton, Iowa) from 2010-2013. While at Vinton-Shellsburg, Mohlis conducted the VSHS Chamber Singers, the premier 24-voice ensemble of the district. Under his direction, the VSHS Chamber Singers toured and competed throughout Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois, and Minnesota, earning top honors at all competitions. The ensemble was one of four groups selected for the Luther College Dorian Choral Invitational, an event to recognize the top ensembles throughout the Midwest. Students studying voice with Mohlis have received top honors and first place at several voice competitions throughout the Midwest. Many have been selected for Iowa All-State Chorus.

Mohlis has appeared as conductor in concert with opera legend Simon Estes. Ensembles under his direction have performed with several artists from the Simon Estes Y oung Artists Foundation as well as the Opera Iowa program based out of Indianola, Iowa. He also has been honored as “Teacher of the Month” in Iowa newspapers and radio programs.

Still an active throughout the region, Mohlis serves as a judge and clinician in both Iowa and Illinois. He currently serves as Facility Chair for the Iowa Choral Director’s Association Opus Honor Choir. He is a member of the American Choral Director’s Association.

Mr. José Clavell is studying choral conducting under Dr. James C. Stegall as he completes his final semester at Western Illinois University. Clavell is a graduate of the Pontifical Catholic University of (Ponce, Puerto Rico) where he received a Bachelor’s in K-12 Music Education and a minor in English in 2012. He studied choral conducting and advanced score studies under Mr. Rubén Colón, renaissance music with Mons. Abel Di Marco, and voice with Mariasen Ondarra.

Before starting his masters, José was the Associate Conductor at the Music Institute Choral Program. As Co-Director, he conducted a 50-voice mixed choir, a children’s chorus, and a 16-voice chamber ensemble. In his career, he has toured in the United States and Canada with the Pontifical Catholic University Singers. He served as guest student conductor at performances in New York’s Saint Peter’s Cathedral and New Jersey’s Saint Joseph of Palisades Church. Mr. Clavell has conducted in Puerto Rico’s Discover Puerto Rico & it’s Choral Music, an international festival.

Active in his hometown, Clavell served as a presenter for visiting choirs from Puerto Rico and the United States offering workshops in Taíno Indian music, Bomba, Plena, and repertoire and rhythms. He appeared in two recordings: Ponce Municipal Band: 125 years of Tradition (2008) and Navidad Borincana: PUCPR Christmas Music (2009).

He is a member of the American Choral Director’s Association and serves as President for the WIU ACDA Student Chapter. Clavell’s research topic at Western is looking at he influence of Latin American Music in Europe and United States. He specifically takes interest in Latin American choral music and the socio-cultural identity of Latin America from 1945 to the present . University Singers Recital Choir 1
