L.O. 4-1 ^4- NUI MAYNOOTH QllftMll II hiJfiifin Ui Mu*« MILITARY AVIATION IN IRELAND 1921- 1945 By MICHAEL O’MALLEY THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH Supervisor of Research: Dr. Ian Speller JANUARY 2007 IRISH MILITARY AVIATION 1921 - 1945 This thesis initially sets out to examine the context of the purchase of two aircraft, on the authority of Michael Collins and funded by the second Dail, during the Treaty negotiations of 1921. The subsequent development of civil aviation policy including the regulation of civil aviation, the management of a civil aerodrome and the possible start of a state sponsored civil air service to Britain or elsewhere is also explained. Michael Collins’ leading role in the establishment of a small Military Air Service in 1922 and the role of that service in the early weeks of the Civil War are examined in detail. The modest expansion in the resources and role of the Air Service following Collins’ death is examined in the context of antipathy toward the ex-RAF pilots and the general indifference of the new Army leadership to military aviation. The survival of military aviation - the Army Air Corps - will be examined in the context of the parsimony of Finance, and the administrative traumas of demobilisation, the Anny mutiny and reorganisation processes of 1923/24. The manner in which the Army leadership exercised command over, and directed aviation policy and professional standards affecting career pilots is examined in the contexts of the contrasting preparations for war of the Army and the Government. -

Clare in WW2 - The Emergency - WW2 /Emergency Stories from Clare Stories from Clare D Day 1944 - The 2nd US Rangers By Ger Browne The aim of this project is to find out how many men and women from Clare took part in WW2, and the effect of the war on Clare. It is hoped that an extension will be added to the Great War Memorial in Ennis that will include the names of the Clare War Dead from WW2 / The Emergency. At the moment we know that 86 died from Clare as well as in Clare. I would like to thank Keir McNamara, and his late father Peadar McNamara for all their research on WW1 and WW2. The Irish Air Corps has typically been equipped based on a “No change Basis” operational budget. Since I joined the Irish Air Corps in 1999 aircraft have been replaced effectively on a like for like basis in terms of numbers albeit in some instances with a capability change commensurate with developing aviation technology, Marchetti SF260 to Pilatus PC9, Cessna 172 to Pilatus PC12, Gazelle to EC135, Dauphin to AW139, Casa CN235 to Casa Cn295, Kingair 200 to Learjet 45, Squirrel to EC135. Where capability has taken a leap forward this has been as a direct result of innovative purchasing on the part of the IAC management in specifying aircraft with greater capability during the replacement program. In the same period IAC have retired the Gulfstream GIV and as a result the IAC/State has lost the capability to project itself across the globe at short notice. All aircraft within the fleet have historically multi tasked being purchased for one mission in mind but in practise being utilised to their maximum capability in a number or varied roles. For instance, Casa CN235 maritime patrol aircraft being used for – Air Ambulance, Parachute operations, ARW ops, Wildlife surgery’s, C2 aircraft, With that in mind lets examine the capabilities that should be replaced and enhanced over the coming years. -

Pilatus Wins Pc-21 Follow-Up Order from the Swiss Air Force
MEDIA RELEASE Stans, December 17, 2010 PILATUS WINS PC-21 FOLLOW-UP ORDER FROM THE SWISS AIR FORCE Pilatus Aircraft Ltd is delighted that the Swiss Air Force is to expand its successful PC-21 Jet Pilot Training System (JEPAS) with a follow-up order for two further PC-21 turboprop training aircraft with logistics and engineering services, plus another debriefing system. The contract with armasuisse, the Procurement and Technology Unit of the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS), was signed in Stans on 17 December 2010, and is worth some 30 million Swiss francs. Delivery is scheduled for the first half of 2012. The Swiss Air Force took delivery of a fleet of six Pilatus PC-21 training aircraft in summer 2008. Since 2009, young Swiss Air Force pilots transfer directly to the F/A-18 fighter jet after basic training on the NCPC-7 and thorough instruction on the PC-21 Jet Pilot Training System (JEPAS). The PC-21's state-of- the-art cockpit is designed to simulate the functionalities of a modern combat aircraft and enables the operator to train pertinent skills at a very early stage of training. As a result, trainee pilots can safely bypass the expensive jet trainer phase. Oscar J. Schwenk, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors, comments as follows on the contract: "The Swiss Air Force has achieved its main goal in purchasing the PC- 21s, which is to train future military pilots to a higher standard in a shorter timeframe with the help of a high-performance, cost-effective training system designed to allow a direct transfer to the F/A-18 fighter jet.
