Sexual abuse settlements have already strained the Boy Scouts’ finances to the point where the organization is exploring “all available options,” including Chapter 11 bankruptcy. But now the financial threats have intensified. The reason: States have been moving in recent months to adjust their statute-of-limitations laws so that victims of long- ago sexual abuse can sue for damages. New York state has passed a law that will allow such lawsuits starting in August. A similar bill in New Jersey has reached the governor’s desk. Bills also are pending in Pennsylvania and California. In New York and elsewhere, lawyers are hard at work recruit- ing clients to sue the Boy Scouts, alleging they were molested as youths by scoutmasters or other volunteers. Nordstrom said the team talked before the game about having a “shot-first mentality.” He said he was the beneficiary of Kuraly pressing the front of the net. “It ended up going in, so we’ll take it,” Nordstrom said. A little over two minutes later Toronto’s Jake Gardiner gave it away behind his own net after being forechecked by Karson Kuhlman. Ennis jarred the puck loose with his forecheck on Grzelcyk. The puck found its way to Tavares, who punched through his second goal of the playoffs to pull the Maple Leafs to 2-1. Toronto got a one-man advantage with 11:38 left in the second after Brandon Carlo was called for a cross-check on Andreas Johnsson. Boston’s defense stepped up, dodging eight Maple Leafs shot attempts to notch the penalty kill. Tempers flared briefly just before the end of the period after Toronto was called for an offside. But a potential fight was quickly broken up. It happened again in front of the Maple Leafs’ bench just after time expired in the second. Brad Marchand and Auston Matthews were in the middle of the scrum. It, too, was brief and ceased after only some mild shoving. Both teams combining for eight shots on goal in first seven minutes. One of the best early runs was by the Maple Leafs midway through the opening period. Mitchell Marner weaved his way through Boston’s defense on a one-man rush and got off a clean shot from just outside the faceoff circles. But Rask had plenty of time to set up and was there to corral it. He also stopped two other close attempts by Marner. His strategy is to begin games with the highest-value clues, hoping to quickly build winnings and land on the one “Daily Double” in the first round. When he does, he usually bets everything, punctuating it with a motion that makes it seem like he’s pushing in all his chips. If he’s wrong, there’s enough time to earn more money. But he’s rarely wrong. The two “Daily Doubles” in the game’s second round are also coveted. He doesn’t bet everything then, but he puts a lot on the line. Holzhauer said show host Alex Trebek once told him that he doesn’t gamble because he could win $1,000 and not care, but that losing $20 annoys him. “I’m not surprised that most contestants don’t gamble the way I do,” he said. “Loss aversion is a very real factor.” The Final Jeopardy round gives him one more chance to place a big bet. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) HHH Tension could build over a finan- cial matter. You might not see eye to eye ANDY CAPP Mahoney, Goldsmith and Garnett with someone else, but it might not be necessary. You could feel that others are refusing to be logical. Tonight: Make your own decisions. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) HHHH You have an opportunity pre- sented to you. Confusion and a potential misunderstanding could cause you to look at this matter differently or possibly not even hear the offer. Stay centered; you might hear what’s being discussed more clearly. Tonight: As you might like. Cryptoquip AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) HHHH Absorb information with care. Once you digest all that’s said, how you ZACK HILL John Deering and John Newcombe feel about what you’re hearing could change radically. Take your time before giving any responses or thoughts. You’ll have an unusual outlook. Tonight: A must appearance. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) HHHH Zero in on an important meet- ing. Although many controversial ideas could be tossed out, some might have in- laid pearls of wisdom. Think about what’s being presented. You don’t need to com- ment unless you really want to.
