A Garnet Health Foundation Newsletter

SUMMER 2020 On the cover: Vice President of Nursing Deb Snyder is moved to tears during an appreciation motorcade organized by the local community to honor the healthcare heroes of Garnet Health Medical Center. Garnet Health received an extraordinary amount of community support during the battle with COVID-19. From March to July Garnet received gifts such as cash to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE), PPE itself, pizzas, Girl Scout cookies, gourmet chocolates, and numerous hot meals. Each gift was appreciated for its fuel or protection during some very dark days. We regret if we missed recognizing any individual or business who so generously gave to us. It was our intention to capture all that came through our doors, but as you can see, it was as overwhelming as is our gratitude.

Thank you so much. COVID-19 DONORS AS OF JULY 17, 2020

On behalf of the Medical Staff president and immediate past president, we want to thank the many members of our hospital teams for their response to this viral pandemic. Whether on the frontlines or in medical support, it took everyone’s efforts, knowledge, and professionalism to combat this infectious process. I know many of the medical staff responded by volunteering to practice medically, not in their primary specialty or subspecialty, to help with staffing, meet the call of need, and take care of the patients in our communities. We thank and commend each of you!

We believe that Garnet Health and its hospital bases, Garnet Health Medical Center and Garnet Health Medical Center – Catskills, responded with extreme professionalism, appropriate decision-making, and timely medical processes in regard to this challenge. Many lives were saved while responding to the increased demands of local, state, and federal governments. We thank the hospital administrators and the executive team for giving us the processes, workflow protocols, and tools required to fight this devastating disease.

The overwhelming community support has been very welcome and greatly appreciated! It is something of which we can all be extremely proud. Thankfully, it appears things are looking brighter, but there remains much more work to do until our lives return to normal, or at least a “new normal.”

Please remember this pandemic has side-tracked us from celebrating the weeks and days honoring our healthcare professionals, including Laboratory Professionals Week, Nurses Week, Administrative Professionals Day, Hospital Week, and, of course, Doctors Day!

Even so, we must all be acutely aware of how important they are in our healthcare system, in this crisis and every day. Please never hesitate to thank these professionals for the work they do in supporting us. We should all be very grateful to the organization for which we work. We should all be proud to be members of this medical staff!

So please take time to pat yourself on the back and remember to thank all those healthcare team members who continue to work hard and tirelessly under the exceptional conditions that have existed throughout this crisis.

Please remember: we and the medical staff office are here for whatever you may need. Do not hesitate to reach out. Stay safe and healthy. We wish you all the best as we go forward.

Again, thank you for all that you do every day for our patients.

The Foundation donated an AED (automated external defibrillator) to the Town of Wallkill Recreation Department. In support of the construction program, the Foundation will be launching a $7 million Every Minute Counts campaign, which will provide a variety of levels for naming opportunities including treatment bays, an outdoor garden, diagnostic area, helipad, and the Mass Casualty Treatment Area.

The campaign theme is derived from the medical knowledge that from the moment a person starts to experience stroke symptoms, the clock starts ticking. Every minute that passes can make a difference in how well their brain, arms, legs, speech, or thinking ability recover.

For more information on how you can support this important regional project, please call Bill Dauster at the Foundation Office at 845-333-2333. Why Every Minute Counts & Why Your Support Is Needed

The success of emergency medical treatment often depends on how quickly a patient can get to a high- quality emergency department. Often, patients are in need of emergent, cardiac-related services. Garnet Health Medical Center has a sophisticated and growing cardiac program that treats a wide range of patients. Special thanks to Stroke Coordinator Suzanne Geraci BSN, RN, for the following statistics:

• 87%: The percentage of stroke victims whose symptoms are caused by clots blocking blood vessels in the brain, making them potential candidates for clot-busting therapy if they get to the hospital in time • 9-1-1: The number that people should call immediately after they or someone near them begins to experience symptoms of stroke, so that the patient can get to a stroke center hospital as soon as possible • 4.5: The maximum number of hours that can pass between the start of stroke symptoms and the start of clot-dissolving treatment (called tPA) • 2 million: The approximate number of brain cells (neurons) lost for each minute delay in restoring blood flow after a stroke • Under 60 minutes: The treatment goal in starting clot-dissolving treatment (called tPA) for those suffering a stroke • 6: The number of letters in the phrase “ BE FAST,” an easy way to remember the sudden signs of a stroke: >> B stands for off balance andE for eye vision lost. >> Face drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? >> Arm weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? >> Speech difficulty: Is speech slurred, are you unable to speak, or are you hard to understand? >> Time to call 9-1-1: If you have any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get to the hospital immediately. • 24/7: The hours in a day when hospitals of all kinds should be ready to handle the arrival of a stroke victim, no matter what level of stroke care the hospital can provide Staff Updates
