Home Stories Home Stories v We believe that a home is a collage. A unique composition of objects set in continuous motion by people (and pets). As we move through our lives, we collect the things and the memories that com bine to create the grain and texture of spaces that could only be ours. When a Vitra object arrives in your home, it already comes with a long story. One of a designer who, in collaboration with us, starts a seemingly endless development process, filled with trials and errors. One of a manu facturing attitude where the details are not the details, but what makes the quality of your new piece. And you take this tale forward enriching it with the stories of your own home. • The Architecture of Libraries in Italy. Scenarios
THE ARCHITECTURE OF LIBRARIES IN ITALY. SCENARIOS, STRATEGIES, OPPORTUNITIES MARCO MUSCOGIURI ARCHITECT, ALTERSTUDIO PARTNERS, MILAN www.alterstudiopartners.com [email protected] I am not a librarian, but an architect who has been designing libraries for many years, often working side by side with librarians. I have written a couple of books and run courses for librarians and architects on library design, I have drawn up feasibility studies and functional programmes for the construction or renovation of public libraries, and I am designing some libraries, a couple of which I will present during this speech. Over the last few years, this work has given me the opportunity to work with librarians, architects and administrators, and to examine up close the situation of the libraries in several parts of Italy, particularly in the North. Over the last few years, after decades of almost complete stagnation, also in Italy there has been a growing public and social attention towards public libraries. Italy is lagging very much behind in this sector: a backwardness which manifests itself above all in a scarcity of legislation and adequate funding, and the lack of far-reaching programmes throughout the country to promote this service. Not to mention the habit of underestimating the impact of cultural services on social and economic development. Last but not least, the collective imagination of the Italians holds an image of public libraries as dusty deposits of books, useful only for students, shrouded by an aura of sacredness and silence. It should be said, however, that libraries themselves struggle to keep pace with the changing needs of their users, in terms of service models, opening hours and the language and styles of communication.

  • The Gold Medal for Italian Architecture 6Th Edition La Triennale Di Milano January - October 2018
The Gold Medal for Italian Architecture 6th Edition La Triennale di Milano January - October 2018 General information La Triennale di Milano, in collaboration with MiBACT, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Cultural Activities and Tourism, announces the sixth edition of the Gold Medal Prize for Italian Architecture. The event is held every three years to promote, and to reflect on, the latest, most interesting works built in the country, and on those who have made these works possible. The Gold Medal for Italian Architecture aims to promote contemporary architecture as a means for improving the quality of the environment and civil life, while also looking at architecture as the outcome of the dynamic interaction between architects, clients and companies. The Gold Medal for Italian Architecture offers an active reflection on the role of architects and on their works, with the aim of introducing the public in Italy and abroad to a new heritage of buildings and ideas. It also provides a periodical overview of the state of Italian architectural production, illustrating its problems, trends and new exponents. Procedure The Prize consists of the following categories: – Gold Medal for Best Work, for the quality of the design, the environmental intelligence and setting, and the construction and capacity for technological innovation. All the works selected by the jury for the various sections indicated below compete for the Gold Medal. – Special First Work Award for the best first work by an architect under the age of 40, aims to give due prominence to a new generation working in Italy and abroad. – Special Award for Clients.
