"TOWARD A

GENEALOGY

OF THE

COFFIN FAMILY.

BY W. S. APPLETON.

BOSTON: PRESS OF DAVID CLAPP & SON. 1896.

....\.T the anniversary meeting of the Coffin family at Nantucket in 1881 a committee on genealogy was appointed. Nothing has yet been heard from the committee, and probably nothing ever will be heard from it. Meanwhile I have made such extensive gatherings concerning-the branch of the family which remained at Newbury, that I have determlll.ed to print them for preservation, and as a help to him who shall ever undertake a complete genealogy of the family. I will not assert that this record is free from mistakes, but they certainly are very few indeed. I have had the benefit of an examination of the papers of the late Joshua Coffin, which helped me much. From the papers of the . late Thomas Coffin Amory I have also learned some facts relating to th~ Boston branch, but not so many as I had hoped.

UNCERTAIN COFFINS. Several mysterious persons of the name of Coffin are found at Boston and Newbury in the first half of the eighteenth century. Probably all were descended from the first Tristram of Newbury and Nantucket, but I am unable to give them their proper places in the genealogy. · The most interesting is JOSEPH COFFIN, who was a member of the New North Church of Boston in 1727 : m. 11 August, 1730, Abigail, probably daughter of William Thomas; moved soon to Newbury, and in 1743 was dismissed to the Third Church of New bury, now the Fir.st of N.ewhuryport. C-hildren, b. at Newbury : i. Abigail, b. 25 September, 1731; m. 12 December, 1752, Joseph Remick of Newbury; .d.. 18 January, 1:8.23; he cL 28 October, . 1782. _ ~. ii. William, b. 6 May, 1733. iii. Apparently he moved te Sal-em, where Henry ·and Eu.nice Coffin had Mary, bapt. in 1738, Elizabeth, bapt. in 1741, and where Eunice Coffin, the second wife, d. in March, 17 87, aged ·83. Mercy, the eldest :daugh ter, m. at Newbury 5 January, 1736, Enoeh Hunt.

DANIEL COFFIN signed the covenant of the New North Church in 1729 : m. at Boston 19 De.cember, 17.28, Mary Blague, had Ann, b. l;S July, 17.29, New,comb Blague, bapt. in 17.30. ·

• The use of these two names makes me think that Joseph _may have been a grandson of Stephen of Nantucket, youngest son of-Tristram. · 42 COFFIN GATHERINGS.

Most of this branch of the family adhered at the Revolution to the British Crown. The three brothers, William 4, Nathaniel 5, and John 6, were Addressers of Hutchinson in 177 4, and their descendants of the name of Coffin are now generally British subjects. Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin had no children, but his brother General John, 5. iii., had three sons in the British service, viz.: General Guy Carleton Coffin, who died in April, 1856 ; Admiral John Townsend Coffin, who died 29 April, 1882; and Admiral Henry Edward Coffin, who died 31 August, 1881. 46 COFFIN GATHERINGS.
