  • Kicks in Style: a Punk Design Aesthetic
Kicks in Style: A Punk Design Aesthetic Kicks in Style: A Punk Design Aesthetic Russ Bestley The Oxford Handbook of Punk Rock Edited by George McKay and Gina Arnold Subject: Music, Musicology and Music History Online Publication Date: Nov 2020 DOI: 10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190859565.013.13 Abstract and Keywords In parallel to the broad diversity of musical styles that accompanied the early punk explo sion, the graphic design and visual communication strategies tell a similarly wide-ranging story. This chapter explores the complex relationship between the stereotype of “authen tic” do-it-yourself (DIY) punk graphics and the music industry professionals who created many of the visual conventions that came to be closely associated with the subculture. While the groundswell of amateur artists, illustrators, photographers, typographers, and other cultural producers inspired by the subculture to create a new aesthetic should not be underestimated, their story has become almost the default history of punk graphic de sign. The role of design professionals—often with many years of experience within the music industry—has frequently been overlooked, an embarrassing secret kept in the clos et for fear of undermining notions of authenticity and punk’s revolutionary rhetoric. Keywords: punk, DIY, authenticity, graphic design, music industry, art production, professional design Like the music that accompanied it, punk graphic design cannot be tied down to a single set of approaches, processes, or concepts. Punk’s visual style was often aggressive and rhetorical, reflecting and commenting on its surroundings, and with a corresponding fo cus on individuality, creativity, and personal expression that set itself in opposition to the norm.

  • Stiff Records Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Stiff Records Discography
Stiff Records Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Stiff Records Discography Stiff Records was founded in 1976 by Dave Robinson and Jake Riviera. Radio jocks usually referred to non-hit singles as “stiffs” (as in, dead), so the idea of Stiff Records was to release artists who couldn’t attract a mainstream audience (at least, at the time. Several were later very successful). Early releases were “pub rock” artists, but this quickly evolved into punk rock. Rivera left to form Radar Records in 1977 and took several artists with him. Up to 1978, Stiff had released primarily singles and a few albums released outside the US. That year Stiff signed a deal with CBS to distribute their product in the US (the deal lasted to 1982). This put the label on the map here. In 1984, Robinson sold Stiff Records to Island Records in England, who entered into a short distribution deal with MCA for US releases. This incarnation of Stiff was not very successful, and Island wanted to dump the label. Robinson regained control of Stiff as an independent label in 1986, but immediately fell into a cash flow crisis and went bankrupt. ZTT Records bought it out of liquidation in 1987, where it remained dormant until 2006. That year, ZTT resurrected the imprint by signing new artists and reissuing old material. Stiff STF-0001 Series (Distributed by Arista): STF 0001 - Stiffs Live - Various Artists [1978] Recorded Live at The University of East Anglia, Norwich, Leicester University and The Lyceum, London. • Stiff Records
Music & Entertainment Company STIFF RECORDS Management (1976-1986) Lamuela, Omnet, Brendan, Kaylee, Natasha HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF STIFFS RECORDS Founded in 1976 by Dave Robinson and Jake Riviera. Both have decided to form an independent record label. Both have music experience working as music managers. Specialize in ‘Pub rock’, but got caught up with punk, ska & new movements. A loan of £400 from Lee Brilleaux to start the label. 1980, Stiff had an annual turnover in excess of £3.5 million. Most famous slogans – Ø“World’s Most Flexible Record Label” Ø“We came, We saw, We left” Ø“If it ain’t Stiff, it ain’t worth a fxxk” Ø“When you kill time, You murder success” ØRobinson told Vive Le Rock- “We were really a management company and we dealt with the records hoping to do well enough with one to fund the next one” ØNot only slogans, but also focus on picture sleeves and music videos. Ø4 years ahead of MTV in making videos. Ø34 different companies are working for them. ØMake videos to enlighten who the artist was. ØBefore their first punk release, Robinson said – “our attitude was ‘we go hard, we go fast’. A great audience are waiting to buy the first punk record, they don’t care whose record it was.” ØRiviera – “ Basically, we are going to put singles that are two and a half minutes long and have got two and a half chords in them. It will be very esoteric”. ØRiviera – “There’s a much larger market than you think, especially we are hoping to distribute through specialist shops like Bizzare Records and Rock On.” ØStiff Records agreed to pay musicians what they were making at their day job, bought them an amp and a tape recorder, let them do their thing.

  • The Red Krayola
The Red Krayola The Red Krayola: The Red Krayola, originally known as the Red Crayola, was a popular Houston- based psychedelic rock band. Founded in 1966 by Mayo Thompson, Frederick Barthelme, and Steve Cunningham, the Red Crayola soon earned a reputation as a boldly innovative group that was not afraid to “push the musical envelope.” Lelan Rogers, brother of Texas country music singer Kenny Rogers, signed the Red Crayola to International Artists in December 1966. International Artists also was home to the Austin- based psychedelic rock band, the 13th Floor Elevators. With Lelan Rogers as producer, the Red Crayola recorded the album The Parable of Arable Land. In 1967, the band made an even more innovative second album, Coconut Hotel, which, because of label concerns over its marketability, would not be released until March 1995 by Drag City Records. In 1967, the group also traveled to California were it played several festivals and recorded the album Live 1967. However, after returning to Texas, the band parted ways with International Artists. Barthelme soon relocated to New York, and the Red Crayola disbanded. Later that year, International Artists contacted Thompson about making a new album. Around the same time, the Crayola Crayon Company began demanding that the group no longer use the name “crayola.” As a result, the members changed the name to Red Krayola. In 1968, Thompson and Cunningham recruited drummer Tommy Smith to join them in recording God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail With It. Due to the album’s lackluster sales, however, International Artists soon lost interest in the group, and the Red Krayola disbanded.
