I think it will be a fantastic Open venue. They are going to add a couple of new holes to the golf course and I think that will be a great addition and will make the course even stronger. I’m really looking forward to it.” Course preparations and the work to create the two new holes on the renowned Dunluce Links are well underway. The new seventh and eighth holes will utilise land from the adjacent Valley Course to develop a new five hole, playing down into the valley encompassing that course’s sixth hole, and then a par four, playing back over its fifth hole into some beautiful duneland. Both holes will have an immediate air of maturity using some of the most stunning land at Royal Portrush. The new holes will replace the current 17th and 18th holes on the Dunluce Links, freeing up that land to be used to accommodate the Spectator Village and Championship infrastructure. Earlier this year the proposals were approved by the Royal Portrush membership and the work is being overseen by Martin Ebert of Mackenzie & Ebert the Club’s golf course architects. As well as creating two new holes, a series of other changes are being made to the course to enhance the challenge that will face the world’s top golfers while remaining true to the ethos of Harry Colt’s original design. The most significant changes will be to move the second green to lengthen the par five hole by around 40 yards and on the current tenth hole, which will be the 12th at The Open, to alter the line of the hole and extend it by 50 yards. Elsewhere, the existing eighth green (the tenth at The Open), which was not designed by Colt, will be reshaped and several new back tees will be created. The overall length of the course will increase by just under 200 yards to 7,337 yards and the number of bunkers will be increased by three to 62 in total, still leaving Royal Portrush with the fewest bunkers of any of the courses which host The Open. The work on the Dunluce Links is due to be complete by the middle of 2016 with the two new holes being given time to grow–in ahead of the following season.

Having pulled his drive long and left into trees, he caught a lie that was in a small depression. When he went at it with a sandwedge, the ball came out lower than he had hoped but as it dropped apparently short of the green, it caught a tree–limb and bounced benignly forward onto the putting surface, settling 12 feet from the hole. Needing two to get down and win, he holed the putt for a dramatic two stroke success – a first prize of e1.45 million, and enough world ranking points to lift him to his highest ever ranking of 19th. “I think this is going to give me the confidence, hopefully, to drive on and win more events and hopefully the floodgates will open,” he commented afterwards. “To shoot 11 under par on this course His putting touch, which was poor by his standards just shows a lot about my game – that it’s good on his comeback from injury in August, showed enough to compete at this level,” he concluded. signs of returning in that season–ending event and Graeme McDowell’s year which had started promisingly it greatly encouraged him as he attempts to climb on the Desert Swing, was heading towards the from his year–end ranking of 3rd up to World No 1 territory of losing his playing rights in the US, again. until he sprung out of the pack to win the OHL “I know if I can putt like this and I can putt like Mayakoba Classic in November. this regularly, then this is what will happen”, he said Like Lowry’s win in Akron, the victory featured a after his final round 66 to post 22 under in Dubai, dramatic conclusion, this time in a three–way play– which tied his lowest 72 hole total of the season. off against Jason Bohn and Scotland’s . “I’m really appreciating the perks of this victory, like getting into the Masters, the Players, things that were question marks on my schedule at the start of the year – Graeme McDowell McIlroy’s Matchplay victory” in Harding Park was On the first play–off hole, the 18th, McDowell hit the first of two World Golf Championship successes the shortest drive off the tee but then struck “as good a by Irish players in 2016. Irish Golf Review 29 GOLF IN 2016 the world come calling. With an eye on developing public interest in the game Darren Clarke, Ryder Cup Captain in a country that up to now has been considerably underwhelmed by golf’s attraction, the course will be used as a public facility when the Olympics have ended. The battle for Olympic places will go on everywhere with the number of places available to major powers like the US, Australia, England South Africa and others so limited. Quite obviously, too, the contest for Ryder Cup places will be equally intense, especially on the other side of the pond. Having won only two of the last ten meetings of the sides, the Americans are desperate to get their hands on the trophy with captain Davis Love defying all precedent by appointing , , Steven Stricker and Jim Furyk among his vice captains twelve months in advance of the match with further appointments to be made in the new year. “I understand that this is the first time we’ve announced these assistant captains this early,” Love said. “I think it’s important that we do so at this time because these guys can help me over the next year. They can be out on tour talking to players. It’s going to make an incredible statement to our players that, hey, these guys are ready to go. We’re excited about it. We have a game plan.” Woods underwent two back surgeries in September and October, but Love said the 14–time major winner still hopes to play his way onto the team. If he does, he won’t relinquish his new role. He’ll serve as a playing assistant. Woods has been part of the Ryder Cup task force created by the US after its five–point loss to Europe last year in Scotland. “The Irish Open has always meant a great deal to me, so I am really excited to renew my commitment to host the tournament, on behalf of the Rory Foundation, for the next three years Rory McIIroy “Tiger wants to” be– a leader of that group, but he wants to do it from the golf course,” Love said. “From before we even started this task force, Tiger was the one in my ear all the time about the things we need to do. He really loves being involved.” Furyk and Stricker told Love they’d also relinquish their roles if they qualify for the team. Stricker, who turns 49 in February, hasn’t represented the United States since the 2013 and is being groomed for a likely captaincy in the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in his home state of Wisconsin. Love’s departure from the way previous American captains have done things has been described as bizarre in some quarters and some of his actions and statements have seemed just a little strange. And then there was the understandable surprise at his own appointment as the captain for a second time having been at the helm in 2012 when the Americans somehow managed to throw away a four point advantage going into the final day. Straight spoken TV analyst was just one of those who saw red when Love got the job. “He had a 10–6 lead in 2012," Chamblee reminded Americans. "He should have had a 12–4 or 13–3 lead. The honour is too big to give somebody who’s only won one major championship that job, twice. I don’t think he got the job done." The close friendship between Love and European captain Darren Clarke is well–chronicled but when battle commences at Hazeltine on September 30th–October 2nd, that will all go out the window. And with Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler, to name but two Americans in outstanding form at present, the home side look to have a lot going in their favour. To be fair, Clarke isn’t badly off for some new talent to replace some of those who have done Europe proudly over the past decade or so but who may no longer be the same force. You suspect that , , even Graeme McDowell, and

30 Irish Golf Review GOLF IN 2016 Sergio Garcia, all heroes of Gleneagles two years ago, will find themselves under pressure from the likes of , Shane Lowry, , and . Only one thing is sure and that is that the battle for places will be very intense and exciting. Meanwhile, the European Tour hopes that relaxation to their qualification rules introduced by new CEO Keith Pelley will strengthen the fields at various tournaments on the home schedule in 2016. Prospects for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at The K Club in May are particularly bright with Rory McIlroy and his foundation now committing themselves to the occasion from the outset and a prize money hike to e4 million, a 60% rise on the ?2.5 million on offer at Royal Co Down last year. It means the Irish Open will have one of the highest prize funds on the 2016 Race to Dubai outside the major championships and also world championship events. “The Irish Open has always meant a great deal to me, so I am really excited to renew my commitment to host the tournament, on behalf of the Rory Foundation, for the next three years”, McIlroy enthused. “I was delighted with the support I received, not only from the players who competed this year, but also from the fans who came along at Royal County Down. I am sure The K Club – on the 10th anniversary as host of the 2006 Ryder Cup – will be an excellent venue.” It will be the first time The K Club has hosted the championship. The Straffan venue previously staged the European Open from 1995 to 2007, a tournament which boasted an illustrious list of winners including major champions Michael Campbell, Darren Clarke, and , alongside former European Tour number ones and Lee Westwood. Sir Michael Smurfit, owner of The K Club, had special reason to be pleased at the news: “We look forward to the year ahead greatly as along with celebrating the 25 year anniversary of The K Club and the ten year anniversary of the staging of The Ryder Cup, it will also be the year that I celebrate my 80th birthday.” In all 2016 promises to be an exciting season full of quality golf and drama.
