BRANCH 5 V GEEVARGHESE Born 1819. Made his residence between Bhishop’s Palace and Kavala at Changanacherry. A flourishing trader in hill produces, who attended to agriculture as well. He was known just and trustworthy in his dealings. Being the youngest among the brothers, he received more affection from everyone and was the beloved of all. Achamma, daughter of Muttar Srambickal Mathai, was his wife. Children: Four sons and three daughters. Expired in 1890. V A1 MATHAI (Kochukunjappi) Resided at Changanacherry Kavala. Known to be solidly built and very brave, Mathai was primarily a businessman. Married Annamma, Paippad Vetticattu family. Children: Four sons and six daughters. V A2 THOMAS Business and residence were centered at Changanacherry Kavala. Married Thresiamma, daughter of Geevarghese, Paikkattu family. Children: Six sons and two daughters. V A3 OUSEPH Resided at Changanacherry Kavala. Engaged in agriculture and business. Married Aleyamma of Kumbiluvelil family, Nedumkunnam. Children: Three sons and one daughter. V A4 CHACKO He made Changanacherry Kavala his trading centre and traded in hill produces. Married Mary, Murickananickal family, Kangazha. No children. V A5 f CHINNAMMA Married to Ouseppachan of Pulincunnu Kanjickal family. V A6 f ROSA She was married to Champakkulam (Paikkattu) Ouseppachan, Changanacherry. V A7 f CHINNA Married to Chacko, Padinjarekalam, Vazhappally. -:oOo:- V A1 B1 VARGHESE (Kutty) Resided and engaged in business at Changanacherry Kavala. Married Achamma of Edanattu family. Children: One son and one daughter. V A1 B2 PHILIPOSE (Kunjachan) Resided at Changanacherry Kavala. He was engaged in agriculture. Married Annamma of Njazhiyalath house, Mundupalam. Children: one son and one daughter. -243- V A1 B3 CHACKO (Kochackochan) Lived near Changanacherry Railway station and traded in hill produces. He was a stalwart and known to be fearless. Married Mariamma of Poovathummoottil family, Koothrappally. Children: Two sons and three daughters. V A1 B4 DEVASIA Lived near the present Philjo Traders in the rear of erstwhile Seematti building at Changanacherry Kavala. The old Seematti building though old, vies with modern buildings and was built by himself. This and the nearby shops were owned by him. Leading hill produce trader of his time, he was a great humanitarian. Married Mariamma, daughter of Devasia, Kuttemperoor. Devasia expired on 4.12.1959. Mariamma expired on 31.5.1993. Children: Seven daughters. V A1 B5 f ROSAMMA Married to Thomas of Kalarickal family, Idinjilam. V A1 B6 f THERTHIAMMA Married to Kunjukutty of Valuvettickal family at Kottangal. V A1 B7 f ANNAMMA Joined the order of Carmalite Sisters. Lived a religious life. Expired in 1970. V A1 B8 f ALEYAMMA Remained spinster till her death. V A1 B9 f MARIAMMA Married to Joseph of Kondodickal family at Thottackad. (Mother of TMS Kuttappan) V A1 B10 f KATHREENAMMA Married to Kunjupappachan of Cherukaramuttathu-Kumbiluvelil family at Nedumkunnam. -:oOo:- V A2 B1 GEEVARGHESE (Kunjappi) From Changanacherry Kavala, he settled in the ancestral property at Kadamanchira and was a farmer. Married Annamma, daughter of Thekkedath Kuncheria. Children: Four sons and two daughters. Died 13.11.1970. Annamma died 15.7.1992. V A2 B2 JOSEPH (Appachan) Settled near S.B. High School at the southern side of the road. He was engaged in agriculture and trade. Married Mariakutty, Prakkatt family, Market, Changanacherry. Children: Three sons and four daughters. V A2 B3 CHERIAN Formerly a bus driver, he settled on the eastern side of the Parel Church and was a dealer in cycle tubes and spare parts. An active member of the Kudumbayogam. -244- Married Annamma of Thayyil family, Changanacherry. Children: Five sons and two daughters. Expired on 25.12.1984. Annamma expired on 10.7.2001. V A2 B4 DEVASIACHAN Though he was brought up in an agricultural family he did not have much interest in farming. Hence, he shifted from his ancestral home at Kunnakkattu to Kavala which is now the central junction where now stands the multi storied buildings owned by his sons. Initially he was involved in bringing down auctioned vehicles from the military cantonment, Bangalore, and selling them. In addition, he started dismantling such vehicles and sold the parts as second hand parts. Later he shifted to hardware and scrap iron business and hence was popularly known as hardware Devasiachen. Though he was circled by very unfriendly or even hostile rivals he never tried to get anything by trickery or treachery. Business for him was not to wangle or amass wealth. Instead he amazed his competitors by prospering through prudence and assiduous work. He was very respected by the business community of Kavala and the surrounding areas. He married Tharthiamma (Thresiamma) of Kunnamkerikalam family in Pallikoottumma in Kuttanad. Eight children were born from their nuptial bliss (including the deceased M.S. Varghese who was called by Sunny by his siblings). Bringing up the eight children was never easy for them. But they took up this arduous task with faith in God. They believed that the real wealth that they could give their children was good education and sound moral values based on Christian principles which they did in earnest. To commemorate his name, a rolling trophy was instituted for the outstanding worker of the Balayogam by his wife Thresiamma. After the Balayogam ceased to exist the trophy is now given to the Kudumbayogam champion. They left for their heavenly abode on 19th January 1974 and 24th October 1995 respectively. V A2 B5 PHILIPOSE Resided at Kunnakkattu, south side of Parel Church. He was an expert farmer. He showed keen interest in the Kudumbayogam activities. Married Thresiamma, daughter of Thomaskutty, Kadamthodu family. Children: Two sons and three daughters. He expired on 18.7.1991 and Thresiamma on 18.1.2009. V A2 B6 MATHAICHAN Settled at Kunnakkattu. He was the branch manager of the Catholic Bank of India. He has also rendered reputed service as the depot manager of Ruby Rubber Works and plantation Superintendent. He was a Municipal Councilor. He acquired vast areas of paddy fields adjacent to his house. Married Thresiamma, Kadavil, Alapuzha. He is the author of the “Marattukalam Kumumbayogam Prayer”. Children: Four sons and four daughters. Expired on 13.8.2006 at the age of 96. Thresiamma expired on 14.12.2009. -245- V A2 B7 f ROSA Married to Pailochan, Mammoottil house, Changanacherry. V A2 B8 f ALEYKUTTY Married to Kandathil Kunjachan, Poomthoppil, Alappuzha. -:oOo:- V A3 B1 M.J. VARGHESE (Vareechan) Lived near the Marattukalam bazar. Besides farming, he ran a bakery also. He was very religious and pious. He was an active member of the Vincent De Paul Society and other religious organizations. He was respected by all for his humility and maturity in thoughts and deeds. Children: Six sons and five daughters. Wife, Ottathil Thresiamma, Nalukodi. Vareechan passed away on 17.7.1994 at the age of 92. Thesiamma expired on 14.7.1991. V A3 B2 M.J. SCARIA (Kariachen) Lived near the Marattukalam bazar, Changanachrry. He ran a provision store in his own building at Kavala. Another means of earning was the rent received from the buildings he rented out. He was morally upright, strict and impartial in dealings. By all means, he was a model businessman. He has been well known as a mediator who settled problems and disputes amicably. Thus he earned the respect of all irrespective of caste or creed. Married Annamma, daughter of Devasia, Thottasseril family. Children: Five sons and seven daughters. He passed away on 10.10.1983. Annamma expired on 12.1.1992. V A3 B3 f ROSAMMA Given in marriage to Kanikkattu family, Mithrakkeri. V A3 B4 Fr. CHACKO, S.J. Fr. Chacko, through his love, dedicated service, blameless character lived his religious life to the full in the Jesuit Order. He was born in 1913 as the last child of Joseph and Mary. The parents saw to it that their children grew up God- fearing. The premature demise of his father was felt greatly in the family. As the older brothers lived an exemplary family life, they took Chacko under their care and he grew up in good Christian atmosphere. From his early days, Chackochan was gentle and pleasant. He was always loving and friendly to everyone around him. These virtues in him made others like him and enabled him to live a fruitful religious life. Being good at studies, he grew up a promising child of the family. His brothers wanted him to study further but God had other plans in store for him. After his intermediate at S.B. College, Changanacherry, he went to Kottayam seminary to confirm his religious vocation. Thereafter he joined the Madura Province of the Jesuits to pursue seminary studies for his priesthood. After seven years of rigorous study and training at Chempakannur, Regency at St. Xaviers’ at Palayamkotta and four years of theological studies at St. Marys’ Kurziyong, he was ordained priest. A part of his life was spent at major seminaries -246- like St. John’s Trichy, St. Joseph’s Allahabad and Sacred Heart Chempakannur as Professor, Rector and spiritual father to aspirants. Only in 1965 he was able to come to Kerala where he was acting Provincial for some time. From 1973 to 1975 he was the spiritual fellow at Layola College, Thiruvananthapuram. From 1975 to 1978 he served as the Superior of the Jesuits’ house at Kanjirappally. The rest of his life he led at St. Xavier’s, Thiruvananthapuram in prayer and studies. His fair and rounded face with the snow white beard and the moderately big build was the embodiment of patience, wisdom, love and simplicity. The typical appearance of a monk was good enough to instill respect in everyone. Though beset with the infirmities of old age, the ten years at St.
