Lives in Limbo: Memory, History, and Entrapment in the Temporal Gateway Film Sarah Casey Benyahia A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies University of Essex October 2018 Abstract This thesis examines the ways in which contemporary cinema from a range of different countries, incorporating a variety of styles and genres, explores the relationship to the past of people living in the present who are affected by traumatic national histories. These films, which I’ve grouped under the term ‘temporal gateway’, focus on the ways in which characters’ experiences of temporality are fragmented, and cause and effect relationships are loosened as a result of their situations. Rather than a recreation of historical events, these films are concerned with questions of how to remember the past without being defined and trapped by it: often exploring past events at a remove through techniques of flashback and mise-en-abyme. This thesis argues that a fuller understanding of how relationships to the past are represented in what have traditionally been seen as different ‘national’ cinemas is enabled by the hybridity and indeterminacy of the temporal gateway films, which don’t fit neatly into existing categories discussed and defined in memory studies. This thesis employs an interdisciplinary approach in order to draw out the features of the temporal gateway film, demonstrating how the central protagonist, the character whose life is in limbo, personifies the experience of living through the past in the present. This experience relates to the specifics of a post-trauma society but also to a wider encounter with disrupted temporality as a feature of contemporary life. -

FILM 5900/7900 - Film Theory Fall 2017 Prof. Rielle Navitski [email protected] Class: T/Th 2:00 – 3:15 pm in 53 Fine Arts Screening: Th 3:30 – 6:15 pm in 53 Fine Arts Office hours: T/W 10:00 am – 12:00 pm or by appointment in 260 Fine Arts Course Description: This course explores a range of critics’, scholars’ and filmmakers’ positions on the “big questions” that arise in relation to films considered as artistic objects and the production and consumption of films considered as meaningful individual and social experiences. Beginning with key debates in film theory and working mostly chronologically, we will consider critic André Bazin’s famous question “what is cinema?” Is it more useful to try to define film’s unique characteristics or to chart its overlap – particularly in a digital age – with other audio/visual media and other visual and performing arts? Should more weight be given to film’s capacity to record and play back a recognizable impression of the visible and audible world, or to its formal or aesthetic qualities – arrangements of light, sound, and time – and the way it communicates meanings through stylistic elements like editing, camera movement, and mise-en-scène. How do elements of film style and the institutions surrounding cinema – from the studio to the movie theater to fan culture – impact spectators’ experiences? How do gender, sexuality, race, and nation shape film aesthetics and viewing experiences? Without seeking to definitively resolve these debates, we will consider how they can meaningfully inform our role as consumers and producers of media. -

MARCEL CAMUS Quel est le point commun entre Jacques Becker, Vinicius de Moraes, Jorge Amado, Bourvil et Barack Obama ? Marcel Camus, un réalisateur ardennais passionné de voyage et empreint d’humanité et de fraternité. Comme souvent, tout a commencé par une rencontre. Lors de la vente de livres organisée par les Amis de la bibliothèque, je discute avec Gérard Tardif à qui j’apprends que je suis le fils de Marcel Camus. Il me propose alors de participer à Signets et d’écrire un article sur mon père. Cette proposition me rappelle un hasard, une anecdote étonnante. Lors d’un trajet pour me rendre à Paris, je prends un exemplaire de la Gazette du Val d’Oise abandonné sur une banquette du Transilien. Je le feuillette négligemment. Je tombe, c’est vraiment le mot, sur un article concernant la sortie en DVD du film Le Mur de l’Atlantique. Il est écrit : « En juin 1970, pour les besoins du Mur de l’Atlantique de Marcel Camus, Bourvil se rendra successivement à Saint-Leu-La-Forêt, dans la vallée de Chauvry (…)». Lorsque nous avons décidé de quitter Paris pour la banlieue avec ma femme, nous n’avions jamais entendu parler de Saint-Leu-La-Forêt. C’est le hasard des balades qui nous a permis de découvrir cette charmante ville. Apprendre que mon père était venu tourner ici, m’a évidemment touché. Marcel Camus et Bourvil Premières mises en scène en captivité Marcel Camus est né en 1912 à Chappes, près de Charleville Mézières, le pays de Rimbaud. Il n’a jamais été nostalgique du climat rude des Ardennes. -

Créditos: Dolores Newman O primeiro filme da cineasta brasileira Helena Solberg, o curta-metragem A entrevista, foi lançado em 1966. Ela morou durante anos nos Estados Unidos e realizou muitos documentários com temáticas de cunho feminista e político. Esta entrevista, realizada em 10 de julho de 2017 no bairro do Jardim Botânico, no Rio de Janeiro, faz parte da pesquisa para um livro que escrevi sobre as mulheres cineastas, que será publicado pela editora Liber Ars. Cleonice Elias da Silva: Pelo que vi, seu interesse em trabalhar com cinema surgiu do contato com a geração dos cineastas do Cinema Novo. Como foi essa sua experiência? Helena Solberg: Quer dizer, como adolescente, logo no início o que eu queria era escrever. A literatura foi uma coisa muito importante para mim. Tanto que eu fiz Neolatinas na Pontifícia Universidade Católica – PUC, e pensava que a 425 escrita para mim tinha maior importância como forma de comunicação. Mas depois você vai vendo que existem outras linguagens, tão efetivas e importantes. Foi na PUC que conheci alguns estudantes que se tornaram, depois, expoentes do chamado Cinema Novo, e nos tornamos amigos. Meu primeiro filme foi uma tentativa de entender minha formação burguesa. E depois daí eu continuei, e me envolvi com o cinema mesmo. C.E.S.: E as suas referências no cinema? Quando você começou a fazer cinema, você frequentava cineclubes? H.S.: Eu acho que a proposta do Cinema Novo foi virar as câmeras para o povo, para a desigualdade no nosso país. -

Jung uses those theories for the first time as part of his treatment of Sabina Spielrein, a young Russian woman bro- ught to his care. She is obviously troubled despite her assertions that she is not crazy. Jung is able to uncover the reasons for Sa- bina’s psychological problems, she who is an aspiring physician herself. In this latter role, Jung employs her to work in his own research, which often includes him and his wife Emma as test subjects. Jung is eventually able to meet Freud himself, they, ba- sed on their enthusiasm, who develop a friendship driven by the- ir lengthy philosophical discussions on psychoanalysis. Actions by Jung based on his discussions with another patient, a fellow psychoanalyst named Otto Gross, lead to fundamental chan- ges in Jung’s relationships with Freud, Sabina and Emma. -
