Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President Laura Giunta at 9:42 AM.

I. Review and Approval of the Previous Minutes and Notes a. There was a date correction for the Computers and Technology committee. With the change, Dalal Fatoush moved to approve the minutes, Kaysha Watson-Phillips seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

III. President’s Report: Laura Giunta a. Laura thanked the Annual Dinner Committee for putting together a great night. b. Laura thanked Peter for the refreshments for today’s meetings. c. Laura thanked the 2018 board, divisions, committees and each of their members for the work that they are doing. d. Laura congratulated the 2019 board and commented that they will do a great job and are working hard.

IV. DIVISION REPORTS

a. Academic & Special Libraries – Kimberly Mullins (Absent/No Report)

b. Children’s Services – Sarah Aiosa (Absent) i. We had 22 people register for our breakfast and installation of officers. It was held at the Heritage Club (Bethpage State Park). We are very thankful to Leslie Connor for speaking about her experience as an author. ii. We are looking forward to a great year in 2019 and we are working hard to recruit active members for next year.

c. Media Services – Barbara Carlson i. On Tuesday, December 4th, 2018, the Media Services Division had a luncheon program at the Nassau Library System. Donna Destefano and Aaron Rinehart of Playaway came to discuss all of the Findaway products and services. They sponsored our luncheon that was catered by Panera Bread. We had 13 people in attendance. ii. The 2019 Media Services Division Board will be as follows: Camille DiPietro (Long Beach Public Library) as President Natasha Drax (Long Beach Public Library) as Vice-President Mamie Eng (Henry Waldinger Memorial Library – Valley Stream) as Secretary Susan Healy (Shelter Rock Public Library) as Treasurer Michele Zwierski (Nassau Library System) as 2 Year Term Director Rachel Taub (Farmingdale Public Library) as final year of 2 year term) Barbara Carlson (Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library) as Immediate Past-President

d. Programming & Public Relations – Dr. Lambert Shell (Absent) i. Our Annual Breakfast and presentation - All About Zines was on Tuesday, December 11th. The presenter was Laura Winnick. ii. 2019 Performers Showcase is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10th at the Roosevelt Public Library so save the date! iii. The Division is in the final stages of planning a program for LILC.

e. Reference & Adult Services – Patricia Marino i. We had our annual end of the year breakfast at Chat Noir on December 5th. ii. Our 2019 board is: Josh Firer – President; Stacey Mencher- Vice President; Diane Bondi- Treasurer; Jeanne Lettieri - Corresponding Secretary; Christine Talio - Recording Secretary; Cynthia HoSang - 2-yr director; Donna Burger -1-yr director; Stephanie Dwyer -1-yr director; Patricia Marino -Past President iii. On Monday December 10th, RASD co-sponsored NLS's Readers Advisory Unconference. We supplied wraps, salads and cookies for lunch. It was a very enjoyable day and I absorbed a lot of information. I think Nicole did an amazing job, as usual!

f. Support Staff Division – Dalal Fatoush i. Dalal and another member attended the SCLA Support Staff Safety Conference in October and it was filled with great information. ii. There will be an East Meets West meeting for April 29th where NCLA Support Staff will have a chance to meet and discuss with SCLA Support Staff iii. Dalal thanked everyone for their work this year.

g. Young Adult Services – Kaysha Watson-Phillips i. Our annual December Brunch and Installation of officers was held on Thursday, December 13th, 2018 at the Roosevelt Public Library 9:30-12:30 PM. The guest speaker was YA Author and National Book Award finalist Ibi Zoboi. There were 39 people in attendance and 29 people renewed their membership at this meeting. ii. The Joint Nassau & Suffolk YASD February Meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 14 at 10:00am at the Patchogue-Medford Library. Suffolk County Police Officer, Nancy Ward, will present a PoliceSmart Cyberbullying Workshop. The workshop will focus on cyberbullying, social media posting, sexting, and identity theft. Flyer to follow. iii. Laura commented that the brunch was great.

V. COMMITTEE REPORTS

a. Annual Dinner – Dalal Fatoush, Chris Marra (Absent), and Barbara Mickowski (Absent) i. The dinner was held on November 29th at the Coral House with 103 people in attendance. ii. Dalal thanked each Division for their baskets. A total of $1300 was raised for NCLA through the raffle baskets. iii. Laura stated that the dinner was great and thanked Dalal for the handmade centerpieces.

b. Archives – Stuart Schaeffer (Absent) i. Dr. James Vorbach reported that a meeting was unable to be coordinated prior to this meeting but that they are expected to meet within the first two weeks in January.

c. Civil Service – Ken Bellafiore i. December 7, 2018 meeting was cancelled due to scheduling conflicts, plus no news from Nassau County Civil Service. Meeting rescheduled to January 25, 2019. ii. Mamie Eng has received permission to share the “Unofficial 2016 NYS Librarian I Examination.” She is working on a presentation to the membership for February 2019 regarding the new examination and strategies to complete the examination. iii. Mamie Eng shared a copy of a document prepared by Randi Sanders regarding Librarian I Exams that was distributed at the NLS Annual Trustees Meeting on Wednesday, December 12, 2018. The information was similar to what the committee has heard in the past. Please see Appendix B for more information.

d. Computers and Technology Committee – James Hutter i. We are coordinating an event “The Internet is Dark and Full of Terrors” with the Pop Culture Committee, taking place on Friday, February 8th, 9:30am at the Syosset Public Library. Topics to be discussed include: -The Alt-Right Movement – The resurgence of Neo-Nazism via online communities -The Incel Movement – The rise of “Involuntarily Celibate Males” and their beliefs -SWATting – The practice of prank calling police and telling them that a person is about to shoot a family member / domestic disturbance, thus triggering a SWAT raid -GamerGate – The practice of using hashtag activism to actively target and harass an individual, coupled with doxing and misogyny -Doxing – The practice of researching an individual’s online persona to discover their true identity and then dumping all personal details about that person to the - Internet for revenge purposes -Grooming – The practice of forming a relationship with someone, who is often a minor, with the goal of taking advantage of them for sexual purposes Our Guest Panelists are: James Hutter - Port Washington Public Library; Michael Buono - Brentwood Public Library; James Hartmann - Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library; Nicki Loder - Westhampton Public Library; Robyn Byrd - Northern Illinois University ii. We are in the beginning stages of planning an IT security roundtable for January. This is in large part due to the recent incident at the South Huntington Public Library in which some individuals tampered with their computers and network. There is a general sense that we should have a meeting to discuss and share best practices. iii. NYLA: James Hutter (Port Washington), Chris DeCristofaro (Sachem), and Nick Tanzi (South Huntington) presented “Libraries Fostering Entrepreneurship Through Technology” on Saturday, November 10th at 9:30am. The session was very well attended (especially for the last day of the conference!). Hoping to present it at Computers in Libraries. iv. Long Island Library Conference: We are in the beginnings of putting together a presentation or panel discussion for this event. If any other NCLA Committees wish to partner with us, please contact me directly.

e. Constitution & Bylaws – Frank McKenna (No report)

f. Continuing Education – Peter Cirona and Lee Gundel (Absent) i. The committee had to postpone the program that was scheduled for Tuesday, November 13th, “Are you out of your mind? Mindfulness in the workplace and beyond,” to be presented by psychologist Drew Velting. g. Directory – Art Friedman (No report)) h. Emerging Librarians – Georgina Rivas and Jason Velarde (Absent) i. The emerging librarians committee hosted the Resume writing workshop on Wednesday November 14, we had 7 attendees. ii. We will be having our Game Night next month on January 11, 2018. iii. We will also be sponsoring the program “The Line Between Service and Safety,” presented by Elizabeth Olesh and Nicole Scherer at the LILC. i. Finance – Jan Heinlein (No Report) j. Health Services – Jeanne Strausman (Absent/No Report) k. Institutional Services – Jeanne Lettieri (Absent/No Report) l. Intellectual Freedom – Jeffrey Feinsilver i. The committee meeting was held on November 20th. Details for the LILC program are still being worked on. ii. The Essay/Art contest question is about how you could change the ending of your favorite book. iii. In the News: ALA put out a document on the state of American Libraries in 2018. It should be noted that more states and organizations are reporting challenges/ban; The Office of Intellectual Freedom will be focusing on the freedom of speech. Focus has been given to violence in the library; ALA has distributed documentation about prisoners right to read. Please see Appendix A for additional articles iv. Laura thanked Jeffrey for his years of service as committee chair. m. LDA Award – Marcia Olsen (Absent/No report) i. Laura thanked Marcia for her years of service as chair. ii. Art noted that nominators should include concrete examples of a nominee’s activities when filling out the nomination. He also reminded the Board that if an outstanding candidate can’t be named, there is no requirement that the award be presented. n. Legislation – Frank McKenna i. Library advocacy day is February 27th 2019 ii. November 6th Election Day resulted in a Senate “flip” to a Democratic majority. Please see Appendix D for a full breakdown. iii. Local meeting with the legislators are being developed. Also see Appendix D for meetings. iv. Please look for advocacy alerts from ALA about the Museum of Library Services Act. o. Long Island Library Conference – Stacey Mencher i. Our last meeting was on Tuesday December 11th, at the Comsewogue Public Library. We had met in November on November 13th at the Bryant Library in Roslyn. ii. Program proposal forms have been posted, you can find the form on our website (https://libconference.org/.) The deadline for divisions, committees, and associations to submit a program is December 31st, 2018. Currently there are 12 program proposals from Nassau and Suffolk. iii. There are currently 18 vendors that have registered. iv. After much deliberation we signed a contract for Dave Isay from StoryCorps to be our keynote speaker. His fee is $8,000 plus travel expenses. We worked out a contract to pay $2,000 at signing, $2,000 by the end of the calendar year, and $4,000 at the event. v. We received the Melville Marriott contract and will be signing it shortly, we are waiting on the PSAV contract to be sent to us as well. vi. The next committee meeting will be Tuesday, January 15th at 1PM at the Melville Marriott. All are welcome, if you are coming please bring your own lunch, cookies will be served. vii. For any questions please email me or contact anyone on the LILC committee through our contact information on the website. They have some new members to work on committees. p. Membership, Promotion, and Mailing – Art Friedman i. We do not have as many members as we have had in the past. ii. Dalal presented a letter asking about why the dues cap out at $55.00 and a salary of $55,000. Art Friedman noted that this is actually NCLA’s dues; the lower amounts represent a graduated scale to encourage membership from those whose salaries are lower. q. Mentoring – Lucia Escobar (Absent) and Chris Marra (Absent/No Report) r. Networking – Valerie Acklin (No Report) s. Newsletter – Mamie Eng i. December 2018 newsletter should be finalized by the end of next week. The Year-in- Review issue is published by the end of January, and the deadline for that will be January 12, 2019. t. Nominations – Nancy Evans i. Congratulations to the incoming Executive Board, division presidents and committee chairs. I’m sure you will all do a wonderful job. ii. This past year Kaysha stepped in to be the 2018 president when the YASD president could not fulfill her duties after the election. Nancy would like to acknowledge that she did a great job. u. Outreach – Maria Fernando Pardo (Absent) i. A new email address has been created so that information can be dispensed by the outreach committee. All information is going to be Fact Checked.

v. Personnel Issues and Professional Concerns – Min Liu (Absent/No Report) i. Narcan is available for libraries

w. Pop Culture – Valerie Acklin and Jessikah Chautin (Absent) i. Harry Potter trip went great. ii. Lisa Zuena will be stepping up to take Valerie’s place. iii. April Brennan will be speaking on Tuesday January 22nd she is a Meme Librarian. iv. Upcoming programs: Co-sponsoring the Internet is Dark with the Tech committee. x. Promotions– Valerie Acklin (No Report) y. Recruitment & Scholarship – April Earl (Absent/No Report) i. The winner of the Andrew Ippolito Scholarship was Pamela Pagones. Cathy Buchsbaum (Lynbrook PL) was the recipient of an Education Grant award. z. Retirees – Bobbi Benigno i. Holiday party was this past Wednesday and it was a success. A special think to Mr. Benigno who purchased many rounds to keep the party going. ii. There are many upcoming events to happen in February, including a fashion show presented by Chico’s. iii. There is a new treasurer and PR person to handle both aspects. aa. Statistics – Mamie Eng i. At the November 2018 MLD Meeting, there was discussion regarding the NCLA Statistics book and why many library directors do not participate. There is a new NLS Directors portal being set up that only directors would have access to, so it was suggested that MLD directors would answer survey questions about salaries, benefits, etc. and that the information would NOT be shared. There were some other similar comments made about this. Therefore, Mamie Eng has determined that to put out a survey for the NCLA Statistics book would NOT be fruitful and she is suspending any further efforts to create an online survey and compile the book until further notice. ii. A discussion on what information is public knowledge and accessibility ensued. iii. We will look into this more in 2019.

bb. Webpage – Catherine Barretta, Shuqian Zhang (Absent) i. The new membership form for 2019 is available and all the minutes from the past year have been posted.

VI. LIAISON REPORTS

a. Long Island Library Resources Council – Tim Spindler (Absent) i. Please see Appendix C

b. Member Library Directors – Frank McKenna i. Will revisit the Statistic Book with MLD at a future meeting. ii. Caroline Ashby is the new NLS director.

c. Nassau Library System – Nichole Scherer (Absent) i. Caroline Ashby has been named the new director of NLS. ii. The new large meeting room has been dedicated and named the Jacquelyn Thresher Meeting Room iii. Outreach services - Customer Service Roundtable will be on Tuesday, January 29 at NLS iv. Youth Services - For Children's the “Mock Newbery Award” is on January 16th at Elmont Library and for YA the “Mock Printz Award” is on January 17th at Sayville Library. v. To book rooms at NLS please go to the NLS website and fill out the request form.

d. Nassau BOCES School Library System – Donna Rosenblum (Absent/No Report)

e. Library Association – Art Friedman i. NYLA will be taking place beginning on November 13, 2019 in Saratoga. ii. Suggested to share our NCLA programming with NYLA. iii. A question was asked about holding the conference downstate. It was noted that travel in and around NYC is not easy and that the conference places are extremely expensive.

f. Suffolk County Library Association –

VII. OLD BUSINESS i. The topic of program fees will be discussed in 2019. ii. The discussion of Wild Apricot will continue in 2019.

VIII. NEW BUSINESS i. Nancy Evans will be leaving the county in mid-January. She has accepted a position as the director of the West Babylon Public Library. She will miss her Nassau county colleagues, especially those she’s worked with through NCLA but hopes to keep in touch and see them in the future. Her last working day at Levittown PL is in January. ii. Laura thanked Nancy for her many years of hard work in NCLA. iii. The dates for the 2019 meetings are on the website.
