  • 1. Will Learn How to Analyze Historical Narratives
History 308/708, RN314/614, TX849 Religious Thought in America Fall Term, 2018 MWF: 1:25-2:15 Jon H. Roberts Office Hours: Mon. 3-5, Tues. 9-10, Office: 226 Bay State Road, Room 406 and by appointment 617-353-2557 (O); 781-209-0982 (H) [email protected] Course Description: Few concepts have proved more difficult to define than religion, but most students of the subject would agree that religious traditions commonly include rituals and other practices, aesthetic and emotional experiences, and a body of ideas typically expressed as beliefs. This course focuses on those beliefs during the course of American history from the first English colonial settlement to the present and on their interaction with the broader currents of American culture. Theology is the term often used to describe the systematic expression of religious doctrine. It is clearly possible, however, to discuss religious beliefs outside the context of formal theology, and it is at least arguable that some of the most influential beliefs in American history have received their most vivid and forceful expressions beyond the purview of theological discourse. Accordingly, while much of our attention in this course will focus on the works of theologians and clergy--the religious “professionals”--we shall also deal with religious strategies that a widely disparate group of other thinkers (e.g., scientists, artists, and other influential lay people) have deployed in attempting to account for the nature of the cosmos, the structure of the social order, and the dynamics of human experience. Most of the people whom we’ll be studying were committed proponents of Christianity or Judaism, but the course lectures and readings will also occasionally move outside of those traditions to include others.

  • The Prophet and the Poet: Richard Shaull and the Shaping of Rubem Alves’S Liberative Theopoetics
religions Article The Prophet and the Poet: Richard Shaull and the Shaping of Rubem Alves’s Liberative Theopoetics Raimundo C. Barreto Department of History and Ecumenics, Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, NJ 08540, USA; [email protected] Abstract: This article explores the intersection between history, mission, and theology in Latin America by shedding light on the encounter between North American missionary Richard Shaull and Brazilian theologian and poet Rubem Alves. It examines Shaull’s impact on Alves as Alves became, first, one of the founders of Latin American liberation theology and, later, one of its challengers as he moved away from normative theological language towards theopoetics. In this article, I underscore particular snapshots of Alves’ vast work, noting that the images of the poet and the prophet that permeate much of it are not mutually exclusive. I argue that Rubem Alves’ provocative work remains an important resource for a theory of action that takes subjectivity and beauty seriously. Throughout this article, Shaull and Alves are presented as different but complementary thinkers, representative of Alves’ prophetic and poetic types. It is argued that a closer look at the similarities and complementarities in the works of this duo may provide us with new insights through which Rubem Alves’ poetic voice and Richard Shaull’s prophetic persistence can come together as resources for the reimagination of our hopes for a more beautiful and just world. Keywords: Richard Shaull; Rubem Alves; theopoethics; liberation theology Citation: Barreto, Raimundo C. 2021. • The Secular City Revisited
the secular city revisited harvey cox and the religious moment in american culture RELIGION IN THE SECULAR CITY: Toward a Postmodern Theology. By Harvey Cox. New York: Simon and Shuster, 1984. $16.95 cloth, $7.95 paper. RELIGION AND AMERICA: Spirituality in a Secular Age. Edited by Mary Douglas and Steven M. Tipton. Boston: Beacon Press, 1983. $17.95 cloth, $10.53 paper. Religion and America surveys the "religious moment" in contemporary Ameri can culture in order to evaluate the health of spiritual life in a predominantly secular era. Several writers address the failure of academics and critics to anticipate fundamental changes in the shape of American religion in the past two decades. Scholars in the 1950s expected both the emergence of "secular religion" and the waning influence of religious commitment in American society. "Instead, surveying conditions today," noted Stephen Graubard, in the preface to the issue of Daedalus in which many of the articles originally appeared, "they find the 'secular' paradigm denied, religion increasingly suffused throughout the culture, and many of the most traditional beliefs enjoying new importance in large subcultures of the country."1 While fundamentalist churches have grown in numbers and visibility, moreover, the liberal mainline churches have experienced a decline. Although the authors disagree about the potential revitalization of theology in public discourse, most agree that "religion continues to speak to the central issues of political order, however far privatization, secularization, and nostalgia have progressed. " This useful book defines the parameters of an ongoing debate about the nature of religious belief in modern society, but it offers few solutions.
