Sullivan Award Show to Stream Live Wednesday IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The AAU James E. Sullivan award winner will be announced Wednesday at 7 p.m. (CT) on a live stream at the Sports Stories Podcast on Facebook. University of Iowa junior Spencer Lee is one of 10 finalist for the AAU James E. Sullivan Award, presented annually since 1930 to the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. The winner is determined by public vote, media vote, and committee vote. The 10 finalists include Lee, Evita Griskenas (USA Rhythmic Gymnastics), Grant Holloway (Florida track & field), Markus Howard (Marquette basketball), Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon basketball), Trevor Lawrence (Clemson football), Dana Rettke (Wisconsin volleyball), Kyla Ross (UCLA gymnastics), Megan Taylor (Maryland Lacrosse), and Abby Weitzeil (Cal swimming & diving). Representatives from the AAU created the AAU James E. Sullivan Award with the intent to recognize amateur contributions and achievements from non-professional athletes across the country. The AAU Sullivan Award is presented to the athlete who has demonstrated the most athletic success, as well as leadership, character and sportsmanship in the past year. World renowned golfer Robert "Bobby" Jones received the inaugural award in 1930 and swimmer Anne Curtis became the first female to accept the award in 1944. Other notable athletes to win the award include famed Olympians Carl Lewis (1981), Jackie Joyner- Kersee (1986), Michael Phelps (2003) and Shawn Johnson (2008), former UCLA basketball star Bill Walton (1973) and University of Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning (1997). Most recently, ESPNW Player of the Year and NCAA Volleyball National Champion Kathryn Plummer was crowned the 89th AAU James E. Sullivan Award winner for her accomplishments in 2018. Dr. Hahn, Congratulations on your confirmation to serve as the FDA Commissioner. We write to follow-up on your promise to Senators Murkowski and Braun to make real a pathway to provide access to promising therapies to those living with ALS today. The signers of this letter are fighting to save lives. That sentence could be written about any number of terminal illnesses. Today, it is about this generation living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Not because ALS is unique. Instead, like so many others living with terminal illnesses this ALS generations’ fight to save their lives lays bare that we must fundamentally change how we provide access to promising treatments to those who are simply fighting for a chance to live. ALS was discovered over 150 years ago. Lou Gehrig died from it nearly 80 years ago. It afflicts those as young as nine and can occur in every race, gender and ethnicity. Today someone alive is diagnosed with ALS approximately every 5 minutes. It will take their capacity to use their arms, use their legs, to speak, to eat, and ultimately rob them of their ability to breathe. For most, within two to five years. There are no survivors. Ever. This letter, however, is not about the past. It is about the present and the future which for the fight against ALS is finally bright. For the first time in history, the ALS drug development pipeline includes a diverse array of novel treatments from stem cell therapies to gene therapies like those using antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) and adeno-associated viruses (AAVs).

For Release October 22, 2019 at 11 a.m. CT For more information: Jack Carnefix, Operations Manager, National Wrestling Hall of Fame 405-377-5243 [email protected] National Wrestling Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2020 STILLWATER, Okla. – The National Wrestling Hall of Fame announced on Tuesday that the Class of 2020 inductees are Distinguished Members Bruce Burnett, Dremiel Byers, Mark Lieberman and Bill Zadick, Meritorious Official Tim Shiels, Order of Merit recipient Gary Abbott, Medal of Courage recipient Gary Chopp and Outstanding American Carl Eschenbach. “This group has accomplished and done so much for wrestling and they continue to give back to our great sport,” said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. “We are proud to honor these remarkable individuals as our Class of 2020.” The Hall of Fame Board of Governors approved the selections at its meeting in Kansas City on Oct. 16. Byers and Zadick were chosen as Distinguished Members for the Modern Era while Burnett and Lieberman were selected by the Veterans Committee. The Hall of Fame has reached a milestone and will induct its 200th Distinguished Member since it began in 1976. Distinguished Members can be a wrestler who has achieved extraordinary success in national and/or international competition; a coach who has demonstrated great leadership in the profession and who has compiled an outstanding record; or a contributor whose long-term activities have substantially enhanced the development and advancement of the sport.
