ROUNDHOUSE KICK - ANALYSIS

).

Master Costa Prasoulas executing text book 180* roundhouse

The round-house kick is one of the most essential kicking techniques for both competition fighting and self defense.

The kicking leg is raised parallel to the floor (90 degree angle) cocking the knee, then the leg is swung against the target, while the hips and trunk are simultaneously twisted in the same direction as the kicking leg. Muay Thai / kickboxing / Pankration / mma is done with a follow through em- phasising the shin (power), whilst Taekwondo & Hapkido have a more snapping motion concen- trating more with the instep (speed).

The roundhouse kick has three areas of target: the low kick, which aims for the side of the thigh, calf or behind the knee, the mid kick which aims for the ribs and the high kick which aims for the chin, temple or neck. Common Mistakes:

1. The most common mistake is to bring the kicking leg up to the front kick position (leg perpendicular to the floor) rather than a good Roundhouse kick position. 2. Don’t separate the motions (rising, turning, executing), try & keep them all in one continuous motion. 3. Try not to snap with just the knee, this is how a lot of hyper-extension injuries happen, rather try to emphasize the quads (thigh muscles) & the glutes. 4. Always keep your guard up (at least one hand covering) Throughout the year, there will stories pertaining to the nature of Martial Arts philosophy and practice.

Life Lessons in the Martial Arts - This Semester’s Story: “The Challenge”

One day a hungry old man entered a small village and noticed a sign proclaiming the name of a local Iaido (sword) school. Knowing that it was customary for a dojo's / palestra (martial arts school) Master to accept all challenges the old man decided upon a very dan- gerous plan. If he could entice the Master into a duel and be defeated but not killed, he would then by tradition be offered food and drink, as well as a place to sleep for the night. Summoning up all of his courage the old man approached the dojo / palestra and then walking boldly in he proclaimed his intention to challenge the Master to a duel. In response a senior student stepped forward, introduced himself, and said that his Master was at home resting but that he would gladly accept the challenge in his place. The old man refused and instead asked that a student be sent to the Master's home to tell him of the challenge. Upon hearing his student’s report of the events that had just taken place the Master immediately put on his swords and hurried to the dojo. When the Master arrived he and the old man politely bowed to each other and in turn introduced themselves, after which the old man re-issued his challenge, but explained that it was not his intention to challenge for ownership of the dojo/palestra as was sometimes the case, this duel was merely to be a test of each man's skill with a sword. The Sensei accepted and because of the nature of the challenge and they agreed to fight using only wooden bokken (practice swords) so that if a customary fatal cut was made neither man would be killed. The old man in truth had no skill at all with a sword, he was simply seeking a meal and a place to rest and this plan had seemed to offer the best prospect for success and so as he stood facing the dojo's / palestra’s Master across the mats, he just held the wooden sword very casually at his side. The Master upon observing how open the old man was to an attack and how unbelievably foolish his defensive posture appeared, suddenly began to believe that this duel might not have been such a good idea after all. Slowly in his mind he began to wonder about the old man's skill and power and in turn he began to doubt himself and his own chances for victory. He knew, however, that his own reputation and that of his academy-palestra was at stake and so he took an aggressive posture. For what seemed a very long time the two men just stood there facing one another, neither of them made even the slightest move. The old man for his part could not understand what was taking so long, but he knew he had no choice in the matter; all he could do was wait for the Master to attack and claim his victory. The Master on the other hand had by now thoroughly convinced him- self that he did indeed faced a true Sword Master, but even so he knew that he must do something very soon and so he started to move towards the old man, determined to press home his attack with all of his skill even though he felt sure now that he had no chance of winning. The old man seeing the look on the master's face and sensing that he was about to be attacked in full force quickly dropped his sword and falling to his knees he broke down and confessed that he in fact had no skill at all with the sword, going on to explain that he had not eaten in days and that he had hoped merely to survive the challenge and then be offered a meal and a place to sleep for the night. Upon hearing this, Master was suddenly overcome with the realization that by allowing his own doubts to fill his mind and by fantasizing about his opponents abilities, he had almost defeated himself. He decided then and there to change the name of his sword style to " Sxoli Horis Skepsi" - The School of No Thought.

TECHNIQUE OVERVIEW

By Master Costa Prasoulas

TRIANGLE CHOKE: Pankration / MMA / Grappling

Submission using the legs in the form of a triangle. A triangle choke (called trigono in Pankration) is a type of figure-four chokehold which strangles the opponent by encircling the opponent's neck and one arm with the legs in a configuration similar to the shape of a triangle. The technique is a type of lateral vascular re- straint that constricts the blood flow from the carotid arteries to the brain.

Master Prasoulas performing a triangle choke with MMA Cage fighting Champion James Lee

How to Perform a Triangle Choke

A triangle choke is a useful choke to use from the guard. It is a defence against someone trying to pass the guard (a). (Or controlling wrist position & setting it up). As they try to pass, they put one leg on their shoulder (b). (In this pic- ture, your right leg.) Unlock your legs and pull their right arm down and across your body (b) \& (c). At the same time you want to get the crook of your left knee over your right ankle (c). This is often hard to do. It helps to get your right shin horizontal and to slide your hips to your right. You may have to use your hands to lock your left leg over your right (b) \& (c). Once you get the left leg folded over (d) this is an incredibly powerful choke. Fold your left leg down while pulling their right arm towards your right shoulder (c). Stretch your hips back while holding their arm or pulling down the head (d).

The triangle choke is a submission hold frequently used in mixed martial arts competition. This choke is a common submission seen from the guard. This is due to the many opportunities to apply the technique that arise from that position. Such as when your opponent tries to pass the guard or to strike. This choke is created by encircling the opponents head and one of his arms with your legs. The legs are then squeezed together, at the same time the opponents head is pulled down. The legs when in this position will form a triangle (hence the choke being called a triangle). When applied to the opponent, this submission hold constricts the carotid arteries, which reduces blood flow to the brain. This will cause the opponent to tap out. If he chooses not to tap, he will pass out within a few seconds.

Kids' nutrition

From the team at Fresh, here are some practical tips to ensure your kids stay on the healthy eating track.

*SMALL MEALS ARE BEST Growing bodies thrive on three small meals a day with healthy snacks in between.

*INVOLVEMENT = INTEREST If children help in the preparation of a meal, they're more likely to be interested in eating it.

*DON'T BRIBE Teach children to enjoy the benefits of good food rather than bribing them with the reward of an un- healthy treat.

*CONSISTENCY Kids thrive on routine. Serve them meals they like, with some variation, a few times a week.

*LEAD BY EXAMPLE Always look like you are enjoying the meal and don't make negative comments about food you dislike.

*DRINK LESS AT DINNER Don't fill kids up on fluids- juice, milk or even water just before a meal.

*SUBSTITUTE For every food your child hates there will be a substitute within its food group. e.g. If they won't eat meat, try fish or baked beans.

Dietary Guidelines for Adults in Australia

Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits & legumes (alfalfa, peas, beans, lentils and peanuts) Eat plenty of cereals (including breads, rice, pasta and noodles), preferably wholegrain Include lean meat, fish, poultry and/or other alternatives. Include milks, yoghurts, cheeses and/or alternatives. Reduced-fat varieties should be chosen, where possible Drink plenty of water. And take care to: Limit saturated fat and moderate total fat intake Choose foods low in salt Limit your alcohol intake if you choose to drink Consume only moderate amounts of sugars and foods containing added sugars. Staying True to the Traditions of the Martial Arts

It is one of the traditions of the martial arts that a person cannot just come in and join a martial arts school. An existing student and/or the instructors must invite the person. As with any institution of higher learning, the potential student must first go through the application process, then the evaluation process, followed by a consideration process, before finally being accepted. If the stu- dent is accepted, their orientation process begins. Order of Responsibility

There is limited space at our academy. As the school owner’s responsibility is to our existing students. The next responsibility is to the families of the existing students, meaning that the existing students’ family members have first right of refusal as openings be- come available for enrolment. It is the charter of this institution of higher learning that we will consider applications for additional enrolments while adhering to the aforementioned application, evaluation and consideration processes. Process of Progression

Upon acceptance, the student will begin their four –five year journey to the coveted Black Belt and beyond.
