Naci ONUS1 Mehmet BİLGEN2 1Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Horticulture, 07059 Antalya, Turkey 2Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Field Crops, 07059 Antalya, Turkey Correspondence addressed E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this study using the chloroplast matK DNA sequence, a chloroplast-encoded locus that has been shown to be much more variable than many other genes, from one hundred and forty two plant species belong to the families of 26 plants we conducted a study to contribute to the understanding of major evolutionary relationships among the studied plant orders, families genus and species (clades) and discussed the utilization of matK for molecular phylogeny. Determined genetic relationship between the species or genera is very valuable for genetic improvement studies. The chloroplast matK gene sequences ranging from 730 to 1545 nucleotides were downloaded from the GenBank database. These DNA sequences were aligned using Clustal W program. We employed the maximum parsimony method for phylogenetic reconstruction using PAUP* program. Trees resulting from the parsimony analyses were similar to those generated earlier using single or multiple gene analyses, but our analyses resulted in strict consensus tree providing much better resolution of relationships among major clades. We found that gymnosperms (Pinus thunbergii, Pinus attenuata and Ginko biloba) were different from the monocotyledons and dicotyledons. We showed that Cynodon dactylon, Panicum capilare, Zea mays and Saccharum officiarum (all are in the C4 metabolism) were improved from a common ancestors while the other cereals Triticum Avena, Hordeum, Oryza and Phalaris were evolved from another or similar ancestors. -

4.2 BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES The project applicant contracted with Environmental Stewardship & Planning, Inc. to conduct biological surveys for the Phase II Project, which is included as Appendix B. The biological surveys prepared by Environmental Stewardship & Planning, Inc. were reviewed by EDAW for consistency with industry-accepted standards. Based on this review and a site reconnaissance conducted by an EDAW biologist, the biological surveys were deemed to adequately characterize the existing biological resources on the project site and in the project vicinity. The information included in the biological surveys and supplemental biological data provide the basis for the analysis included in this section. 4.2.1 EXISTING CONDITIONS The project site is located in the secondary management area of the Suisun Marsh. It is a biologically diverse region that supports a varied assemblage of plant and wildlife species. The Potrero Hills are a series of steep, rolling hills that form an island of upland habitat almost completely surrounded by Suisun Marsh. Extensive areas of grazed grassland are located north of the site. GENERAL BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES Vegetation Currently Permitted Landfill The currently permitted 320-acre landfill is located in the central portion of the interior valley of the Potrero Hills in the secondary management area of the Suisun Marsh. The Potrero Hills are located about 5 miles east of downtown Fairfield, in Solano County, south of State Route (SR) 12. A large portion of the currently permitted landfill has been disturbed to accommodate existing landfill activities, and the remaining natural areas are dominated by non-native grassland habitat. Disturbed areas either are devoid of vegetation or support weedy vegetation, forming a ruderal habitat. -

In the southeastern United States, PSV is widespread in forage legumes and is considered a major constraint to productivity and stand longevity (McLaughlin et al. 1992). It is one of the principal viruses associated with clover decline in the southeast (McLaughlin and Boykin 1988). In 2002, this virus (Fig. 1) was reported in the forage legume rhizoma or perennial peanut, Arachis glabrata Benth. (Blount et al. 2002). Perennial peanut was brought into Florida from Bra- zil in 1936. In general, the perennial peanut is well adapted to the light sandy soils of the southern Gulf Coast region of the U.S. It is drought-tolerant, grows well on low-fertility soils and is relatively free from disease or insect pest problems. The rela- tively impressive forage yields of some accessions makes the perennial peanut a promising warm-sea- son perennial forage legume for the southern Gulf Coast. Due to its high-quality forage, locally grown perennial peanut hay increasingly competes for the million plus dollar hay market currently satisfied by imported alfalfa (Medicago sativa L). There are ap- proximately 25,000 acres of perennial peanut in Ala- bama, Georgia and Florida combined. About 1000 acres are planted as living mulch in citrus groves. Fig. 1. White clover is frequently used as a leguminous cover crop, serving as green manure, and is also included with grasses in cattle feed mixtures. Numerous biological effects reported for clover cultivation have been attributed to the production of bioactive secondary metabolites. Thus far the presence in soil of bioactive secondary metabolites from clover has received limited attention. In this paper we examine for the first time the release of flavonoids both from field-grown white clover and from soil-incorporated white clover plants of flavonoids, as analyzed by LC-MS/MS. The dominant flavonoid aglycones were formononetin, medicarpin, and kaempferol. Soil-incorporated white clover plants generated high concentrations of the glycosides kaempferol-Rha-Xyl-Gal and quercetin-Xyl-Gal. Substantial amounts of kaempferol persisted in the soil for days while the other compounds were degraded faster. These compounds should be considered in future studies of soil fatigue, allelopathic activity, and possible environmental risks from extended clover cultivation. -

Project Funding This project was funded by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. 3 Executive Summary Pacific Biodiversity Institute (PBI) conducted a rare plant and vegetation survey of Riverside State Park (RSP) for the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (WSPRC). RSP is located in Spokane County, Washington. A large portion of the park is located within the City of Spokane. RSP extends along both sides of the Spokane River and includes upland areas on the basalt plateau above the river terraces. The park also includes the lower portion of the Little Spokane River and adjacent uplands. The park contains numerous trails, campgrounds and other recreational facilities. The park receives a tremendous amount of recreational use from the nearby population. -

The purpose of this study is to identify the location and presence of potentially occurring sensitive plant species.
