Ben Stokes, who was 72 not out after scoring his maiden test half-century, and Matt Prior (7) will resume todayday with the tourists still trailing by 252 runs and needing to bat through the final day to keep the series alive. Shane Watson earlier smashed 73 runs off 40 balls for a spectacular century and George Bailey equalled the test record for most runs from a single over before Australia declared at 369 for three some 40 minutes before lunch. Requiring 504 runs for an unlikely victory, England’s worst test session for a long time had not quite reached its nadir and Ryan Harris sensational- ly bowled Alastair Cook for a golden duck with the first ball of the innings. “To have a license to take on the game was a lot of fun,” said all-rounder Watson, whose ballistic 103 included 11 fours and the five bludgeoned sixes. “We’re confident. • 285 - November 2008
THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 285 - NOVEMBER 2008 Wednesday 12 November 2008 – Meeting This year’s beneficiary, JOHN CRAWLEY, makes a welcome return to the Society this evening. His first visit was in October 2005 when members enjoyed a most pleasant evening in his company. John Crawley has endeared himself to Hampshire supporters during his seven years with the County. He has reinforced his penchant for making high scores by being the only batsman in the County’s history to record two triple centuries, both at the expense of the Nottinghamshire bowlers. He made 301 not out at Trent Bridge in 2005 and then followed it up with an unbeaten 311 at The Rose Bowl a year later. Virtually all Hampshire supporters felt it was a great pity that Shane Warne declared when our speaker was tantalisingly close to Dick More’s record 316 for the County. When he last spoke to us he felt that the former innings was the best crafted and that, in respect of the latter, the emphasis had to be on winning the match, which Hampshire duly did. Moreover, he made 272 on his Hampshire debut at Canterbury in 2002; he has therefore recorded three of the six highest innings for the County. All three innings are the highest made for Hampshire in the last 70 years – a phenomenal achievement. He might even have made a triple century in the latter innings but was unluckily run out at the non-striker’s end when a Shaun Udal drive was deflected on to the stumps by Min Patel.

However, with Steyn set to return to the fold after his hamstring injury, the only other candidate to make way is the venerable Makhaya Ntini, and that – for innumerable different reasons – just isn’t going to happen. At least with Kallis expected to play a more rounded all-round role, South Africa will be armed with an extra bowling option. • England Seeking Hat-Trick of Ashes Wins for First Time in Over 30 Years Submitted By: Moneta Communications Tuesday, 9 July 2013
England Seeking Hat-Trick Of Ashes Wins For First Time In Over 30 Years Submitted by: Moneta Communications Tuesday, 9 July 2013 Alastair Cook will lead out his England side on Wednesday morning with the weight of the nation on his shoulders as it is the turn of the cricket team to continue a marvellous summer of British sport. England will be bidding to retain the coveted Ashes crown for a third straight series, making it a hat-trick of victories over their old foes for the first time since 1981. Australia have been all-but written off by the media and cricket aficionados and it looks like England's urn to lose! For over a decade, the English cricketing public would head into a clash with their Antipodean rivals with trepidation and could almost sense achievement if they managed to gain a solitary win from the five-match series but along with the Australian demise in recent years, the English setup has grown in stature and become one of the most revered teams in test cricket. Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower galvanised the English side and captain Cook has duly continued the positive mindsets of the players and his ability at the top of the order twinned with the talent of the likes of Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and James Anderson has seen them create a magnificent spine to the test outfit. Whilst English cricket has blossomed since that epic Ashes win in 2005, the ‘baggy greens’ have become a mere shadow of their dominant past and the setup went into disarray as Mickey Arthur was handed his marching orders from the coaching staff only a couple of weeks before the start of the first test at Trent Bridge.
