Januar 2015, 22.00 - 24.00 Uhr (Zweitsendung) Hank Crawford und der Memphis-Sound auf dem Saxophon Hank Crawford (1934-2009) stammt aus Memphis, Tennessee. Der Saxophonist und Bandleader arbeitete mehrere Jahre für Ray Charles, bevor er sich auf seine eigene Karriere konzentrierte. Als Pianist im Kirchenchor hatte der junge Hank seine ersten Auftritte. Crawford absolvierte ein Musikstudium und spielte in R&B Bands, früh auch schon bei B.B.King. Ray Charles holte ihn als Saxophonisten in die Band und ernannte ihn schon bald zum musikalischen Leiter. In den 1960er Jahren startete Crawford seine Karriere als Bandleader und landete einige Crossover- Erfolge. Auch als Komponist udn Arrangeur war er gefragt, u.a. für Etta James oder Dr. John. In den 1980er Jahren tat er sich mit dem Organisten Jimmy McGriff zusammen, produzierte mehrere erfolgreiche Alben und ging auf grosse Konzertreisen. Singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester here Friday BY GEORGE VARGA SEPTEMBER 8, 2010 JESSE WINCHESTER Not many musicians can simultaneously make Elvis Costello choke up and bring Neko Case to tears with an unadorned solo acoustic performance of a single song. But that’s exactly what veteran troubadour Jesse Winchester did last fall in New York when he sang his wonderfully poignant ballad about two teenagers in love, “Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding,” a standout number from his enchanting 2009 album, “Love Filling Station.” You can watch it here: http:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uKGWpqnS8E%20 The setting was Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, where Costello’s Sundance TV music series, “Spectacle,” filmed its first two seasons in front of loudly appreciative audiences. Louisiana native Winchester — who appeared on an episode alongside Costello, Case, Sheryl Crow and Ron Sexsmith — quietly stole the show with that song and an equally spare but stunning version of “The Brand New Tennessee Waltz,” an understated classic from his 1970 debut album. “Doing ‘Spectacle’ has been a big boost for my career,” said Winchester, who kicks off a five- city California tour here Friday night at the all-ages AMSD Concerts (formerly Acoustic Music San Diego) in Normal Heights. “I’m working at least twice as much as I used to. But I’m not really well known, so ‘twice as much’ for me is still not the same as for a really popular act.” In 2007, Winchester received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Artists and Publishers. Biography -- Printable Version Peter Wolf's Historical Biography Written & Researched by Bryan Wiser, and Sheila Warren with Mimi Fox. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. Peter's mother was an elegant and attractive woman who taught inner-city children in the South Bronx for 27 years. A political activist, union organizer and staunch civil rights advocate, she supported racial equality by attending many of the southern "freedom rides" and marches. Peter's older sister was also a teacher as well as a photographer who now works as an advocate for persons with disabilities. She continues her mother's tradition, often marching on Washington to support the rights of the disabled.

David Fathead Newman
David "Fathead" Newman David Newman was born in Corsicana, Texas on February 24, 1933. His family soon moved to Dallas, where they settled and David stayed through graduating Lincoln High School. After school, David found gigs in local bands. He received a scholarship to Jarvis Christian College and studied theology and music. After two years of college, David decided to go on the road full time with Buster Smith (Charlie Parker's mentor). The band played lots of one nighters and dance halls, touring Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and sometimes California. On one of those tours, David met Ray Charles. Ray was working as a sideman with another group on the night's roster. They immediately bonded, both musically and as friends. When Ray started his own band, he called on David to be part of his group. In 1954, David began a twelve year association with the Ray Charles Band. David began as the baritone player and soon became the star tenor soloist. In 1959, David recorded his first album as a leader, "Ray Charles Introduces David Newman: "FATHEAD" on Atlantic records. It included Newman's dramatic and now famous rendition of "Hard Times". He returned to Dallas for a short time and led his own bands. Then David Newman moved to New York City where his career took off in many directions. Newman recorded many albums for Atlantic records, as well as Warner Brothers and Prestige. During this time in NYC, David gigged with Lee Morgan, Kenny Drew Sr., Billy Higgins, Kenny Dorham and so many other of the great jazz musicians hanging out on the New York scene.
