Davies Gym Home of the Southern Illinois Salukis In the Spotlight Choosing to become a Saluki student-athlete is special. Salukis have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their university to news media, alumni, friends, family and the general plublic. And while student-athletes come from all over the world to attend SIU, their families, friends and fans have never been more connected. Almost all of SIU’s home matches through 2024 will be broadcast live on one of ESPN’s platforms, in a partnership between the conference and ESPN that is just beginning. The “new” gym was able to seat 1,250 fans anxious to watch their Saluki women’s volleyball and basketball teams in action. On September 5, 1982, those fans were able to see the Saluki volleyball team win its first match in the renovated gymnasium over state rival Illinois, 15- 8, 8-15, 15-13, 15-7. Alex Rivera, who played two seasons at SIU and is one of 11 Salukis in the 1,000 digs club, is playing professionally with Las Gigantes de Carolina in her homeland of Puerto Rico. 2015 AVCA All-American Honorable Mention Taylor Pippen, SIU’s all-time leader in hitting percentage and block assists, signed to play professionally in Spain for the CV Haris team, Figaro Peluqueros Haris, based in Tenerife, Spain after graduation. There is no qualify for state meets in the races that these athletes will run over the next three days. This comes down to conference bragging rights and titles that teams have been working for most of the season. It will also give us an indication of how good some teams really are. The other big meet of the weekend is the Patriot Invitational at Detweiller Park featuring some of the top 1A teams and runners. It will be the last race on Detweiller grounds before the IHSA State Cross Country Meet on November 5. Here is a look at SOME of the meets that will take place this weekend. Thursday 10/13 Corn Belt Conference @ Maxwell Park, Normal The first big meets this weekend could be one of the best. The top 2A Boys teams in the state Mahomet­Seymour and Normal University face off for the first of four straight meets. Mahomet­Seymour looked great last Saturday as they previewed the sectional course at Metamora running only a fifteen second split on their top five. They finished U­High who was without their top two Jack Franklin and Jared Shuckman. Both will be back in action and should be up front challenging Mahomet’s Andrew Walmer for the individual title.
