In the Spotlight Choosing to become a Saluki student-athlete is special. Salukis have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their university to news media, alumni, friends, family and the general plublic. And while student-athletes come from all over the world to attend SIU, their families, friends and fans have never been more connected. Almost all of SIU’s home matches through 2024 will be broadcast live on one of ESPN’s platforms, in a partnership between the conference and ESPN that is just beginning. The “new” gym was able to seat 1,250 fans anxious to watch their Saluki women’s volleyball and basketball teams in action. On September 5, 1982, those fans were able to see the Saluki volleyball team win its first match in the renovated gymnasium over state rival Illinois, 15- 8, 8-15, 15-13, 15-7. Alex Rivera, who played two seasons at SIU and is one of 11 Salukis in the 1,000 digs club, is playing professionally with Las Gigantes de Carolina in her homeland of Puerto Rico. 2015 AVCA All-American Honorable Mention Taylor Pippen, SIU’s all-time leader in hitting percentage and block assists, signed to play professionally in Spain for the CV Haris team, Figaro Peluqueros Haris, based in Tenerife, Spain after graduation.
